tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I am still having trouble adjusting to recruiting under Urban.

With JT you knew who the targets were ten months before signing day. Then you watched to see them commit or fall by the wayside. As the day got closer the only new names were the "plan B" kids who signaled one of the prime targets was not to be. Pleasant surprises late in the game were unheard or.

With Urban I don't have a clue. "Plan B" is as likely to be a long time committed 5 star as anyone else. The staff may be hot on the trail of some kid whose name only hits the boards when they show up for a visit. Coaching changes are chum in the water. And after only one year of this that late stud is already an expectation.

Things I'll be looking for coming out of this weekend:

Does Conley commit or does he take the Michigan visit? If he does the odds go back to 50-50, with OSU still having a great chance to land him but now we have to wait and see how the Michigan visit goes. Hopefully since he is staying through the ceremony tonight his trip will at least overlap a little with some of the verbals coming to town.

Does Mitchell commit or take other visits? Similar to Conley...I think OSU will be the measuring stick but I would rather see him commit on this visit than take other trips.

Does Tommy Sanders leave with an offer? If so, could be an indication of where the staff feels things sit with the other LBs on the board.

Does Munger give us anything we can get a read on? Unlikely...but at least the staff should have a good idea where they sit with him. Still not feeling this one for whatever reason...and thinking UCLA is where he eventually ends up but who knows.

Even if Mitchell and Conley don't commit I am going to sleep easy knowing that Meyer, Vrabel, Pantoni and Co. are the best closers in the business and OSU will finish strong regardless of what goes on this weekend.

I agree with all of this, but especially the bolded portion. I really like how wide of a net has been cast. Seems like the alleged Plan-Bs this year are Plan A guys in most other years and for almost every other program. I think this is especially true at the WR position.

I think part of what makes things so tough to predict is that we don't really know from the outside exactly what order the staff has guys ranked and who they are really going to push for. We've seen that offers aren't always fully commit-able. I think it is also pretty clear that there are going to be plenty of new names that pop up, especially with the coaching carousel likely to make a few more turns before signing day.

From my position on the outside looking in, it looks like there are a small handful of elite guys that the staff would make room for no matter what: Quick, Conley, Bell, Mitchell and Johnson. If they can get at least 3 out of those 5, this class would be a huge success and really address the need areas. Especially with to many other attractive candidates to fill however many spots are left.

Out of everyone on the list, I gotta believe Tracy Sprinkle is going to be making a move up the rankings.

A couple other numbers that stuck out to me were 247 having Lee as the 66th best player in Ohio, and Rivals having Conley as the 40th best player in the state.

Anybody that saw what Lee did to Marion-Franklin knows that 66th ranking is non-sense. Doesn't matter though. Lee is a baller and will show it on the field.
