tOSU @ Purdue, Wed 2/4 @ 6:30p ET, BTN

One of the most extreme cases I've seen. Why is Hammons allowed to body-slam the opponent when he "blocks" a shot? And why is Purdue allowed to clutch and grab every fucking time on defense?

Pissed off right now.
Yeah this pissed me off as well. It seemed like every time we breathed on a Purdue player they a got call while Buckeyes were getting pulled, slapped, and tripped with no call. Awful, awful officiating.

While I will agree that this was not a very well officiated game, Ohio State still should not have lost. Purdue really is not that good but if the 4 other Buckeyes on the court with Russell are just going to stand around and wait for him to score this season is not going to end very well. The rest of the team has to get involved with the offense. There is way too much standing around and waiting for Russell to make a play or a shot.

Scott has good games and bad games but his shooting is mostly bad especially when he is running at full speed and decides to throw up a prayer. He shoots much better when he received a pass and is stationary. He also needs to contribute on the defensive end a little more because that is really why he is playing.

I wish Thompson would penetrate a little more into about the 10 foot range and use his jumping ability to get off a fairly nice shot. He does not do that often enough. Tate is a freshman and we need to realize that. He brings a great deal of energy to the game but he has his limitations and one of them is outside shooting which this team desperately needs especially with the absence of Loving.

Our big men have not improved at all since day one and nothing really needs to be said about them. I sure wish the Buckeyes had Hammons and I think that Hammons might wish that he came to Ohio State where Matta would have utilized him much more on offense then Painter does. He should get at least one touch every time Purdue comes down the court. I think we would have lost escape by a lot more than 2 points if Hammons had been more involved.

What exactly do you suggest, down two with 4.6 sec and no time-outs?

Well, I would assume most coaching staffs have a few scenarios for plays given how much time is left on the clock (<3 secs, 3-5 secs, 5-10 secs, 10 secs +). I also assume that they practice each of these scenarios at the end of each practice in preparation for using at the end of half/game.

Now, obviously the plan was to get DAR the ball and have him take it as far as he could and take the shot (don't have much time for a pass with less than 5 sec, so fair plan). The problem is, DAR can't come back to the ball, pivot, square up, then start dribbling. Maybe DAR messed up by not using the screen and catching the ball on the run. Maybe the screener messed up by not being in the correct spot, so DAR had no option to use the screen. Maybe the coaches messed up by not being properly prepared and the team was just winging it.

We don't know who messed up, but it doesn't take much basketball knowledge to know the we could have done something different to get a better shot. Personally, I would have had Scott bring the ball in and plan for DAR to use the screen (would have used Tate on the screen with no big on the floor) and try to catch the ball on the run (not coming back to the ball). If DAR cant get free enough to catch it moving at least sideways, then as soon as Scott passed the ball to DAR he should have been sprinting up the court, where DAR could have passed it off to him and let Scott race it up the floor. He probably wouldn't have had enough time to make a pass for a catch and shoot, but he would have had enough time to get the ball all the way to the basket for either a foul or finish and other than DAR, SS seems to be our best shooter off the dribble.

Great, and if the Buckeyes had a timeout they could've drawn up something like this. But they didn't, and consequently harsh criticism of the coaching staff is IMO inappropriate and misplaced.

The last play was bad. Having Russell come back to get the ball was a huge mistake and I knew they were doomed at that point.

Would have thought they would have a play designed (like the ET play against scUM in the B1G tourney a few years back) to get the ball up the court quicker to increase the chances of getting a better shot.

Oh well, young team. Hopefully they learn from the mistakes and get better as the year progresses.

"oh well we only had 4.6 seconds that was the best we could do so I live with it".....that is terrible thinking. I seen West Virginia down 1 with 1.8 seconds left go the entire length of the floor on an outlet pass with NO TIME OUTS against TCU and the guy was shooting a lay up and got fouled and hit both FT's to win the game. They didn't have a time out and they were coming off a shock basket where the other team hit a shot with 1.8 left not a FT where you KNEW you were getting the ball.

Hard to believe some people here think that play was acceptable

You know what happens when you assume?

As a coach I can tell you that you spend the end of ONE practice at some point before the season maybe practicing those situations. It's certainly not something you go over on a regular basis.

To those calling for "a play". They had no timeouts and no opportunity to setup a "play". Was a mistake made by going back to the ball? Yes. Would I have had Scott bring the ball up with shooters on each wing at breakneck speed? Yes. It didn't work out that way. Get over it.
