tOSU @ Penn State, Thurs 2/27 @ 7p ET, ESPN2

Well this night could not have gone worse first we lose to Penn State for a sweep and their 1st win in 10 years on their home floor vs us then my other team Kentucky chokes a big one just like us on a ton of missed FT's and loses for the 1st time in 20+ years at home and is swept by Arkansas....man 2012 feels so long ago both teams in the final 4 and 1 winning a title.......neither makes it past the sweet 16 this year would be a major achievement if either made it to the sweet 16.
I thought that was the best thing that happened tonight, and not because I like Arkansas.

Losing to one of them in the B1G Tourney would be even more fun.

I have no expectations at this point (this team is going against almost lot of trends under Matta).

Yeah they are - virtually every other Matta coached team has started that improvement trend by this point in the season. The only one that didn't was the team that lost to Siena in the 1st round of the NCAAs. Even the NIT team was improving quickly at this point.

Not blaming them, just saying they took over the whole game and made it about them and not the game. Crap happens when games are officiated like that. This is the same team lose or make that shot. Might make some noise in tourney because teams can't simulate Craft and Scott. To make it past sweet 16 we are gonna need a combination of matchups with teams with no dominant bigs and someone else besides Ross hitting shots.

Virtually every single game in the Big Ten that we've had a thread on at BP for the past 4 years (at the very least) has talked about how consistently horrible the refs are for both sides. You can't say the refs were the cause of the loss, because when you only shoot 42% overall and under 30% from 3, the refs are hardly the cause of a loss, especially against a below average Pedster team.

Refs obviously didn't want to ruin Penn State's senior night or weekend. All I got to say.
Refs were garbage, they always are in the B1G. But that is NOT why they lost. Ped Aggy had plenty of head scratching calls on them too. They lost because they once again played down to a team that, on paper, is inferior from a "talent" standpoint. That has been a disturbing trend this season. This time they just didn't have the second half rally.

It's been said plenty, but this team has no reliable scorer. LaQ is better off as a complimentary scorer playing off of a guy like Deshaun Thomas. Craft and Scott are elite-level defenders, but offensively they are limited. Smith is too streaky. Amir, while he has his moments occasionally, does not play like a man of his size should. Sam is streaky as hell. Loving has a ton of potential, but he needs work. Good class coming in next year. I think next year's team will be more like what we've become accustomed to the past few years. Just a down year. It happens to every program.

It's just not a very good team by Matta standards. Teams that improve begin to "mesh" as the season wears on. This team is a bunch of mismatched parts with no real identity. Hard to mesh when you're working with a bunch of circles and squares. Like many have said, this team excels when they just go out and attack...on D and O. When they try to run a set offense, they are pretty awful. To Ped Aggy's credit, their D played pretty well and limited what the Bucks could do, and that's where they run into trouble. I knew the goose was cooked when Craft went flying into the lane all out of control to pick up (I think) his 4th foul. At that point, it was obvious they couldn't do what they do best.

Yeah at this point they are having to play the fly to the basket game without the over the top athletes that other teams do it with and without a consistent outside shooter to boot.

Officiating controlled this game, and that's too bad. Not sure if they are trying to prep teams for the tourney or not, but there were so many ticky tack fouls called, it just ruins the flow of the game for everyone. My tips for coach are as follows: 1. We do better when we play up tempo. 2. You have to figure out how to play against a zone defense, and Aaron Craft driving to the hoop is not the answer. 3. The ally-oop play for Sam Thompson only works about 20% of the time, and trying it when we are down is just bad math. 4. We have to stop using the entire 35 second shot clock to execute a play. Any confidence this team may have had going into March was probably lost last night. Yeah, they will be in the Dance, but not likely to go far. This just is not their year.

Couple of points:

1. and 2. are conflicting issues. This team plays infinitely better when they go uptempo and attack. Problem is, they lack the athletes and shooters to properly neutralize a good zone defense.

3. When the whole team goes cold, as they too often do, this is their best offensive play, unfortunately...

4. This is also an issue and has been all season. When they try to run designed plays/set offense, they run into a brick wall and end up chucking the ball around the perimeter for 30-32 seconds then settle for a contested/ill-advised jump shot. Or somebody goes flying into the lane out of control. We just don't have the athletes/scorers to get open and create their own shots.

As for the confidence and tournament...well, I thought they were certainly NIT bound earlier this month when they went into that swoon. But, they bounced back pretty well. It's a resilient bunch...just not overly good. The tourney, as usual, will totally depend on the matchups. There are guys...LaQ, Sam, Smith, even Craft, that can get hot on any given night. Problem is, there are nights when it seems the whole team goes cold for extended periods. If they can get some guys going, they could make a small run and get to another sweet-16. But, I think that's their ceiling this year.

I will admit that I have not read this entire thread yet but I agree with what much of what NFBuck has said in his posts on this page.
The one thing that I will disagree with is that I think we got homered when it comes to the officiating. I usually do.not bitch about officiating because It usually does go both ways but that was not the case last night. Sure there were some questionable calls against PSU but there were plenty more questionable calls against the Buckeyes. I think if I were Matta last night I would have went Fran McCafferty on the officials. There were a couple calls that were not even questionable. they were terrible and I cannot see that well.

I know this does not pertain to the game but the announcing rivaled the officiating. I do not know where that play-by-play guy came from but he needs to go back and thank goodness we will not hear from him again the rest of the season. Tess… Is a different story. Not only is he bad during play-by-play basketball it is my understanding that he is going to take over for Brent Muss next season and do the prime time football games.
