Night Practice a Night Out for Buckeye Fans
By John Porentas

It was a beautiful night, the lights were on, and 28,000 people showed up for the OSU night practice and autograph session at Ohio Stadium on Monday, and there was no doubt that they were thirsting to see some Buckeye football. The practice itself was rather basic and with very limited hitting, but that did not stop the fans from getting into the spirit of being in Ohio Stadium. That was evident before the team took the field to begin practice when an O-H-I-O cheer made its way around the stadium, followed by "Lets go Bucks". It was very much like a game-day atmosphere that got even more game-day like when the OSU marching band made an unscheduled appearance about half way through the practice, much to the delight of the crowd which stood and cheered as the band entered the South end of the stadium.
"I think it's a great reminder of the responsibility that we have. There's a lot of people who care deeply about Ohio State football," said OSU football Head Coach Jim Tressel.
"It was really unbelievable to see how many people came and got the kids autographs and just enjoyed the evening."
The crowd, the band, and the game-like environment was to the liking of Tressel.

"It was a great experience for our guys. They were talking on the line of scrimmage that they couldn't hear and had to communicate in a more game-like way, had to look into the lights and catch punts and passes," Tressel said.
When the practice concluded, the football team made its way to the South stands where the OSU marching band was seated. The band played Carmen Ohio, and the team sang with them just as they do after every home game.

It appeared that most the fans had good time, though the stadium began to empty about two thirds of the way through the practice. With the clock registering between 9:30 and 10:00 pm, many with small children or with early-morning responsibilities began to file out.
While the practice itself was pretty vanilla, there were a few standout plays, like the interception and return for touchdown by freshman defensive back Kurt Coleman. Coleman had an impressive interception in the spring game and also played well in the jersey scrimmage.
"Kurt has got a lot of work fundamentally to do, but I think he can make plays, and when you can make plays, now you just need to get some experience. I think Kurt Coleman is going to help us," said Tressel when asked about Coleman's prospects for playing this season.
Notes:

* Backup quarterback Justin Zwick took his share of reps during the practice despite being slightly injured during the jersey scrimmage. Fellow quarterback Todd Boeckman, however, saw very limited action in the practice.

"Justin missed one practice after Saturday and really hasn't missed any since," said Tressel.
"He hasn't gone live as far as people banging, but Todd Boeckman got banged up a little bit in the scrimmage. He didn't even know it until the day after. It was just one of those things where he got nicked a little bit and our people are being conservative, but he'll be fine."
In Boeckman's absence, Robby Schoenhoft got extra reps. According to Tressel, the battle for the number two quarterback spot is still open.
"There's a pretty good battle," Tressel said.
"I think Justin has had two real good practices (since the jersey scrimmage) and has good game experience and so forth, but I like a lot of things I see in both Todd and Robbie. It's a good little battle," he said.

* While its clear that Troy Smith will be the starting quarterback at Ohio State, there were some reporters who wondered if Chris Wells has a chance to see time as OSU's starting tailback early in the season. Tressel put that speculation to rest quickly.
"Antonio Pittman will start at tailback. That's probably as solid as anything, but Mo Wells, Chris Wells and Antonio Pittman will all carry the ball," said Tressel.
"I would think that in the first third of the season anyway we're going to play a lot of guys on the defensive front, offensive front, in the secondary, at linebacker, at running back, at receiver, we're going to play a lot of guys.
"We'll do that for a couple of reasons. One, we want to see who really emerges on game day and two we know its going to be warm at 3:30 on September 2 and we know its going to warm at 7:00 pm central time on September 9, and we're going to need to play a lot of guys. I think a lot of guys deserve to play just to see how they'll do when the lights come on for real."
* OSU linebacker Mike D'Andrea was on the sideline for the practice but was not in pads and did not participate. Linebacker Chad Hoobler was not on the sidelines.
"Chad has left the team for personal reasons," Tressel said.

1. With the lines as long as they were, I agree with the assessment that adults should wait behind the kids. In fact, if I were one of the players, I would only sign for an adult if no kid was available at the time. I don't get the fascination of grown men with the signatures of unpaid college athletes. I'm concerned it's more of a money thing, which would anger me.

2. The defensive backs (other than Jenkins) got eaten up in the one-on-one drills. O'Neal, in particular, looked bad to me. Brent Ullery was schooling Jamario because he plays with his hands far too much, and doesn't utlize his foot quickness nearly enough. Jenkins is a stud though, and will be 1st-team All Big Ten. Mark it down. Shaun Lane looked ok, Donald Washington and Kurt Coleman showed flashes.

3. I was extremely impressed with Robiskie. He's got great hands and leaping ability. Dukes is very athletic, but needs to work on catching before running. I agree with everyone else that Small looks like a Holmes-clone. Hartline also stood out, and Ginn/Gonzalez did their thing as well.

4. Schoenhoft looks good. Didn't get much of a chance to check out his mobility but his accuracy and arm strength are incredible.

5. Troy looked rusty. I'm not sure what to make of it, but he was off on many passes. Maybe it's necessary that he be in a pressure situation in order to hit his mark. I'm not worried about it, but it's worth noting.

6. Robert Rose... Beast.... Enough Said.

7. I like Pettrey more than Pretorious. Big leg, accurate. Can he perform at night against Texas?

Sweeeeeeeeet

Overall, I thought the team looked awesome. At the one-on-one drills, Gonzo SMOKED the defender 2/3 of the time. Ginn made a sweet one handed catch, turned, planted his hand on the ground to regain his balance (the shift forced the defender out of bounds and out of the play) and he glided into the endzone. Smith overthrew about 75% of the fades, but I'm sure thats expected after 10k signatures. Other than that, he was sharp, rocketing the ball to his receivers.

The defense looked menacing. They put LOTS of pressure on the QB and forced some poor passes from the QB's. Kerr layed out one of the tight ends out of bounds and they were jawin a bit. Rose and Gholstin are MONSTERS. Their size and speed enabled them to get into the backfield on several occasions. Coleman's pick was smooth. He's gonna be sweet.

Zwick seemed to hold his shoulder at times, but was a trooper and continued to practice. Although he had a black jersey on, he'd still get smacked with "light" contact.

The band showin up capped an amazing night.
I'm hoping Dublin only rolled his ankle... He made it off the field on his own power, but they took him back in the cart (maybe just precautionary?)

I got to bring my 4 year old daughter to the stadium for the first time and she got right into the OH IO. It almost brought a tear to my eye. I was so proud.

Go Bucks!

I agree. For the life of me, I can't understand what a grown man is going to do with a college kid's signature, or why he would want it.

I made some 8X10 photos of key players. Not an autograph hound, but they will look nice on my wall. There is nothing wrong with some personalized memorabilia from some of your favorite players. I got 3 of the 6 I was looking for. By the way I let at least 8 kids in front of me. Fortunately the line I was in became somewhat organized a half hour into the session. They were able to put barracades up to prevent people from crowding. That's what I plan on doing with my autographs.

So after reading all 10 pages of this thread the thing that pops out to me is that people are cheap and most likely will always expect something for nothing. A free event like this, regardless of whether it could have been planned better, turns into a free-for-all with 250 yard lines where people feel that they are entitled to whomever's autograph they please and will complain to news reporters about little Johnny not getting an autograph and how it isn't fair. Contrast that with the autograph signing at the spring game where for a $50 donation to charity, you got an autographed senior photo and one other item of your choosing signed by all of last year's seniors (excluding Hawk who wasn't there). The wait for my 10 year old son for such a privilege...30 seconds. You may say that not everyone can afford that and while that is true, it shouldn't make the difference between a 250 yard line and 2.5 yard line. People are simply always looking for the easy way out. Hopefully Tressel instills better principles in our football team.

The bottom line is that you are not owed anything merely because you stood in line for a couple of hours. How many other universities put on this kind of an event...not many. Be glad that you got to see the team in action 11 days before the rest of the nation!

Without knowing anyone else's experience but my own, I think what most people are saying they are owed is courtesy, respect and fairness.

I'm sure there would still be those who complain if there was absolutely no pushing and line cutting, but my 7 year old and I stood (outside & inside) in line for 5 hours & 45 minutes, and to see grown men, women and teenagers pushing into the front of lines with ushers standing right there as we continued to wait and wait I understand the frustration of many of those with complaints.

Several dozens of people I saw cut up in front of us were "owed" something as well in my opinion...:box: but I believe that there are things 'worth it' and others not, and it didn't hurt for my son to take the opportunity to practice patience.

I agree with number's 1, 3, 6, 7. I cant comment on the QB's, I didnt watch them very much. As far as number 2, I agree but would like to add I thought Anderson Russell looked very good in one on one drills, got beaten once by Ginn and once by someone else (I forget who) but very good coverage skills overall. Kerr and Laurinaitis both looked faster than I expected as well.

I'd have much rather given the $50 to charity and skipped the lines.

But it does make you a bit pissed when you've been in a line for an hour and you find out that the line goes nowhere. I literally mean it went nowhere. It went to some recessed part of the stadium where there was a table, but there was no player there.

Wrong. If he's there four hours prior, he's at least entitled to be at a function that is well organized, controlled, and not a complete clusterfuck.

Wrong. It's a free event planned at basically the last minute, so nobody's entitled to anything from the players and coaches who are taking part in this "good-will" gesture toward the fans. And actually it was pretty organized, except for the obvious Tressel/Smith/Ginn goldrush. But hey, all I wanted from the players was some good hustle and competitiveness on the field--and I got it.

Football Quotes

Aug. 22, 2006

Jim Tressel, Ohio State Head Coach
On the crowd turnout
"It was a great experience for our guys. They were talking and saying they could not hear at the line of scrimmage. That compromised the game a little bit, but they were looking in the lights and catching passes. It just shows the respect we have. A lot of people care about Ohio State football."

On starting positions
"The first to third games of the season, we are going to play a lot of guys. No. 1, we want to see who can play on game day. No. 2, it's going to be warm at 2:30 on the first game and warm at seven o'clock at night in Texas. We want to see how the guys play and everyone deserves a shot."

On the atmosphere of a night practice
"Most of our guys have played under lights before in high school. Our upperclassmen suggested to do this and the juices got flowing. A lot of people came, got autographs and everyone had a great time."

On the autograph session
"We went a half-hour longer than scheduled, so it was not hard to stop. But we had work to do. Our guys gave a lot of time and lots of people got a turn. I saw a lot of stuff come through that had lots of autographs on it, so people got around the stadium."

On the surprise appearance of The Ohio State Marching Band
"I talked to (band director) John Woods before the practice and he said he has heard our guys sing and that they needed practice on Carmen Ohio."

When i said Nobodys i didnt really mean it i had just got home from c-bus and was upset with how ohio state handled the event and people showing up right as the gates open and run in before the people who were waiting for hours.....

Then some jerks in line trying to pick fights with people bcuz they were trying to talk to people they knew.....

The autographs i was happy with them when i finally just thought about it but at the time when i was lied to then when i found the line people were just jerks so they kinda ruined my time.......

lol but anyways.....We look good i cant wait till season starts

If you didn't mean it, then DON'T say it. Next time think about what you're saying/typing b/c your apt to get some backlash! I'm not afraid to dish it out either; especially in this case. I have nothing to hide and I don't believe in PC. I say exactly what I feel and don't hold back! With that being said, I'm glad you realize that it was a "treat" for you and everyone to get the opportunity you did. Shame on the scumbags who acted like friggin' idots and ruined the experience for some. OSU needs to do a self exporation on how to better handle these situations.

Think about the kids that are bedridden in a hospital fighting for their lives and can't get out to see their idols. JT and the team do visit as many as they can but what about the ones who can't be reached? Be thankful for what you all got. I'm a proponent of banning anyone over the age of 18 from getting autographs at FREE events!

Everyone else should have to pay, whether it's a fee or donation to a worthy cause!

Nuff said!

I thought Russell played real well also.

Also one question, I couldn't tell if it was a 6 or a 9, but was it Grant or Rose that deflected Schoenhofts pass at the line of scrimmage?

Finally, I must say I enjoyed the practice and think it should be an annual thing, it could really help break in new starters and the young guys who missed participating in the spring game to really get a feel for the intensity we buckeye fans bring to the game!
