Well, Ryan Day has just managed to blow a 23-3 fourth quarter lead.

This is Michigan State 1998 version 2.0.

In that game, Ohio State led 24-9 with 9:40 left in the 3rd quarter with Michigan State punting. Ohio State muffed the punt, Michigan State recovered, and the Spartans went on a 19-0 run to win the game, 28-24.

In this game, Ohio State led 23-3 with 5:47 left in the 3rd quarter with the Buckeyes punting. Texas muffed the punt which should have been recovered by Ohio State but wasn't, and the Longhorns went on a 21-0 run to win the game 24-23.

I have been Ryan Day's biggest supporter over the years, but I'm done. This loss was inexcusable. Day failed to go for the jugular (he never does) and he essentially tried to run out the clock for the entire second half. Gutless football, play not to lose, choke the game away.

The thing is, I don't think it's Day per se, It's something in the deep fabric of Ohio itself. Woody, Tressel, Cooper, even Urban, after the first couple of years. Ohio State has almost always had a play not to lose mentality. Even when a coach comes in with aggression, within a few years he becomes a turtle. We're always expecting the hammer to drop and it just seems to infect the program at a fundamental level.

Also up 22-3 go for 2 they didn't have time to score FGs they had to get 7 each time.

I don't agree that you should go for 2 that early in the game. The missed 4th down early when they could have gotten a field goal was bigger.

Urban makes it 45-3 sometime in the 4th quarter. Tressel takes the air out of the ball entirely and goes on an 8 minute drive.

Which was Tressel’s version of a “blowout” knowing he built a team and personality to consistently run out the clock and embarrass you.

Day is still in between. Goes run run pass trying to be conservative. Then the FG miss drive he finally started to “open” it to passing but was still not creative.

We know we have #4 but Sayin not progressing to involve others and see the field is a problem.

Maybe we need to add a few more TEs to the field. They add so much…

The fact that you're even posting this is ridiculous. it was a 3 score lead at halftime. Jim Tressel would have won this game easily by running the ball and punting.

Literally. Bring in our long range kicker. All you need is a field goal. Why expect someone on scholarship to miss when randoms of the street are drilling it right down the center. I’m the idiot for thinking something different.

Not sure I agree. Very close and similar. Day doesn’t understand the game anymore. He understands recruiting and being good people. But he has no feel for the game. None.

I don’t think it was the FGs, they had a comfortable lead. It was the lucky bounces Texas got directly interspersed with the 3 and outs. They gained confidence and played better, we went to shit on offense.

I know you're saying Day, but so far as we're all aware, Arthur Smith is calling the entirety of the offense now.

Now it could be the offensive play calling took on the personality of Day, but I would think an experienced NFL OC would be able to resist that.

I guess you are right if they miss the 2 and make FG your only up 7 instead of 9

Just make the FG and game is all but over we always seem to miss the big FGs
