Game Thread tOSU at Sparty - Sep 29, 3:30 ET, ABC

This year's edition of the silver bullets has given up a lot of yards to bad offenses that have bogged down in the red zone because they didn't have Leveon Bell. MSU has a bad offense that does have Leveon Bell.

Unless the defense improves a lot; MSU will score a lot of points.

Unless the offense improves a lot; they will not come close to keeping up.

MSU won't make our defense tackle in space, so I like our chances to show significant improvement. Agree about our offense. They are probably in for a long day.

I think Herman is holding back till B10 season. We scored 21 points in 6 minutes Saturday. On those drives we ran curl routes and threw to the TE. They held Braxton back and worked Hall back into the offense easy. We should have scored 36.

BTW we scored more points against Cal than the vaunted USC offense did. I think we are gonna unleash the offense this week. IMO they used the 1st 4 weeks to prepare for the B10.

IMO the TE's and backs are gonna be thrown to 10 times this weekend. I expect more slants, curl routes, drags routes, and wheelroutes. Bracton is better rolling out as well. When they roll him out and he throw intermediate routes we move the ball with ease.

1st team to 17 wins.

I hope you're right and I hope the only reason we did it was because the AP ranking meant nothing this year, so only do what was needed.

However, at the same time, why would Urban be so upset during pressers about the performance while holding things back?

If UFM is holding things back, I would think he would be mad at execution on Off, and tackling on Def. Those things should be standard every week.

MSU will key on stopping the run, especially Braxton. We will key on stopping Bell. I think that if we both have relative success stopping the run (big if, I realize) I give the edge to tOSU's passing game being able to make something happen over MSU's. My early week prediction tOSU 31 - MSU 20.

It's not a matter of whether I want the Buckeyes to lose. If they continue to play without urgency and fire they will. Sure they may be able to go through the Big 10 this year continuing to play mediocre football because the Big 10 sucks. But next year after another soft out of conference schedule and no end in sight for the awfulness that is the Big 10 they may be able to walk through that too only to come to a big bowl game and get trounced by a real team.

No one can believe the team as it is currently playing is a national championship contender. Players, coaches, or some combination of both need to realize that the Buckeyes aren't playing Championship football against crappy teams.

Would I prefer for the lights to come on without a real soul cleansing? Absolutely. History shows that is rarely the circumstance.

Make no mistake: When the Buckeyes line up against the Spartans this weekend I will be cheering, hoping they've finally got it, but if they get stomped they may have needed that more anyway.

Have you not seen the recruiting???

Woody Hayes said something like nothing cleanses the soul like getting your ass kicked. I think this team could use a soul cleansing. Considering the long view of this team not being bowl eligible this year, maybe getting beat up may be the best thing for the Buckeyes in the long run. Walking through a butter soft Big 10 this year won't help them be ready for next year when they should be gunning for the national championship. It may be best if the Buckeyes gets beat up one of the next 2 weeks. I'm just not sure that Andrew Maxwell or Nebraska's defense will be able to deliver the soul cleansing needed.

I agree, and I was saying something to this effect during the first quarter of the UAB game.

I will say this every week until it happens, but this team deserves to lose a game, needs to lose a game, but I don't want it to be this week.

I think being undefeated is getting in the way of real improvement. I think we'll start to see this group take off once it's made real to them that the things they've gotten by with in the first four games are not going to be enough to get to where they want to be.

At the very least I think there are some things that this team is being coached to do that aren't being carried over to the field. Whether that's down to coaching, the players, or both, I'm not sure. If there comes a time where they don't get away with it though and it results in a loss, maybe that will serve as a catalyst to lasting improvement.

Coach Meyer said at one point that he wants this team to play like they've had something taken from them. I think everybody thought that he was referring to the sanctions and the lack of a bowl game, but if the players are pissed off about losing that I don't think it has carried over into their attitude on the field. The team has higher expectations now than they did last year and I think that if they lose, they may truly start to feel like they've had something taken from them. If that happens, and if this team has the right talent and leadership, a loss would be like rocket fuel.

Nobody here is rooting for a loss, likes the feeling of a loss or thinks they should try to lose. I think we've all seen teams though where a loss got a team's attention, made them take greater notice of their flaws, got them motivated fix things and helped them carry themselves to greater heights. As somebody who doesn't think this team is going to go undefeated, I'm curious to see how this team reacts to a loss. I know Coach Meyer doesn't want to lose, but I'd bet he's also curious as to how this team would react in that situation. Since he's still new to us, I'm interested in seeing how he reacts and how the team's reaction informs his coaching and recruiting.

For OSU to win, they need the LBs to wrap up and not be a liability and the offense needs to move the ball more consistently than they have all season. Doesn't mean they have to score 30+ points, because I don't think they will, but if they can put together a few drives of 7-8 plays, even if they have to punt, it will give the defense a break and create some confidence in those guys.

My biggest concern is MSU getting the ball and grinding out possessions of 10+ plays and scoring TDs at the end of those possessions. OSU cannot go into this game and let MSU have 35+ minutes of TOP and let them cash in in the red zone. That will be a game killer.

As for the offense, I expect Miller to be a big part of the ground game early, and then they will gradually work in the different types of play actions and counter plays that involve the D biting on his QB power, option, and draw plays. They could do that right away because MSU will be trying to take the ground game out of the offense, but I think they need to let him get comfortable first before he passes the ball. I'd like to see them run some screens to Hall, Brown, or Stoneburner as well to get Miller confidence and rhythm as well.

Obviously MSU isn't a great team nor are they even a really good team, but after losing to ND, I'm thinking they will come into this game about as hyped and prepared as they will be all year and it will be a tall order for such an inconsistent and young team to come out of East Lansing with a win. They can certainly do it, and they could even produce a large margin of victory, but they would have had to solve a lot of mistakes and problems in a week's time, and I doubt that will happen.

It'll be a nail bitter for most of the game, but I have to go with OSU finding a way to win 28-24. Miller will get his 2 rushing TDs, Hall will find the endzone, and we'll have another Stoneburner sighting as well.
