Ohio State will be down several players when it faces Michigan State on Saturday. The Buckeyes released their status report Saturday morning and 17 scholarship players, including six starters, will be unavailable for OSU. Including walk-ons, a total of 23 players will be unavailable today. The program does not specify why a player is unavailable, although the Buckeyes canceled last week’s game at Illinois due to COVID-19 concerns within the program.
Half of the starters unavailable are on the offensive line, where left tackle Thayer Munford, center Josh Myers and right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere are all out. In addition, one of the top backup offensive linemen, Paris Johnson, is out.
Sources have informed Bucknuts that many of the players who are unavailable today did not necessarily test positive for the virus. Some of them are not playing even though they tested negative, due to contact tracing (meaning they had extended exposure to someone who did test positive).
With three starting offensive linemen down, the best guess is that sophomore Harry Miller moves from left guard to center. Or perhaps true freshman Luke Wypler will be the starting center. Sophomore Dawand Jones will likely be a starter at one of the tackle spots. Other candidates to move into a starting spot today will be redshirt freshman guard Enokk Vimahi, third-year sophomores Matthew Jones and Max Wray, redshirt freshman Ryan Jacoby, or perhaps one of the true freshmen.
Other starters (including occasional starters) that are out are fifth-year senior middle linebacker Tuf Borland, junior safety Josh Proctor and junior defensive lineman Tyler Friday.
The No. 4 Buckeyes (4-0) are 24-point favorites over the Spartans (2-3). Ohio State is scheduled to host Michigan (2-4) next Saturday, but the Wolverines are dealing with COVID-19 concerns within their program and canceled their game against Maryland that was scheduled for today.
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day is one of the people within the program that tested positive for the virus and he did not make the trip to East Lansing. Larry Johnson will be the Buckeyes' interim head coach against the Spartans.
