If an outside guy grabbed a gunner by the shoulder pads and brought him down with his own momentum as he ran forward it would be called every time (well maybe not in the B1G but that's not the point). The point is, after the snap the long snapper holds a block (if necessary) for about a 1/1000 count then busts it down field to cover the punt so if he was firing out it wasn't to block anyone. It was to release from the line and cover the punt. Riding him to the ground is the very definition of defensive holding.
It was the right call.
