Game Thread tOSU at NW'ern, Oct 5, 8 ET, ABC/ESPN/ESPN2

You're right. I've overrated Stanford.

In my opinion, the teams who look markedly better than the Buckeyes at the moment are Clemson, Florida State, and Oregon, in that order. Baylor is averaging over 70 points per game (:yow2:) but against some pretty feeble competition, so they're hard to rate.

I'd put Ohio State 4th on my poll behind the teams listed above, and I'd probably put Alabama somewhere between 5th and 8th.

And yet all the teams you mention have their flaws too, and I could see the Buckeyes beating any of them under the right circumstances. Some of them will fix their flaws, and some won't. Our team had an utter crap game, and still won.

No argument from me on any of this.

This is actually a much more fun year than I can recall recently, in that there are so many teams that arguably could play for the NC. The past couple of years it's been a near certainty that the Crimson Tide would play someone, and that the "someone" would likely lose. This year, there might be as many as 15 teams that conceivably could be playing in that NC game, and the season is nearly half over. Bama is still good, but they don't seem to have separated themselves from the pack of other good teams.

Our team is making a habit of not being particularly close to opposing teams receivers.

This year, there are plenty of teams with strong offense and weak defense but I can't get the picture of receivers with no one within 5 yards of them out of my head. I can't remember seeing anything like that. I like how our offense matches up against just about any defense, but the thought of some of these top offenses coming up against our D is pretty scary. ...it's not just having a bad game, we've established a pattern.

It seemed to me that NW was looking for the cushion coverages - their QBs were only really fooled one time. They could have gotten whatever they wanted all night but didn't for long stretches in the 2nd half.

Also, a few times when they would throw the wide-field outs, the WRs would catch the ball expecting to be hit, only to realize there wasn't anyone within 10 yards of them. I think they were as shocked as we were.

Maybe Urban thinks that we can outscore anyone with a "bend but don't break" defense?
Or maybe we till have "issues" like LBers in pass coverage?
We are still undefeated for some very good reasons.
Like great "goal line stand" defense.
Great punting and coverage.
Two very good QBs.
Fine receiving at WR.
Very good offensive line play.
Carlos Hyde and Jordan Hall.
Great defensive line play.
Leadership.
Team depth.
Speed.
And speed every where.
And damn good coach!

one thing that i think is a problem moving forward, is Bradley Roby's fear of willing to wrap up and tackle. He keeps wanting to come in and project himself like a missile. You're not bob sanders dude, i can see his draft stock falling by the day because he's shown a serious weakness in his inability to step up and tackle. Anyone else feel the same?

Roby does have issues with tackling. Saw it happen in the Cal game, saw it against Abbrederis, and saw it again last night,

The one play we are both probably thinking of, I don't think it was poor execution. Rather, the defender made an excellent play to avoid the hit.

Well I just got back in after being out all day with the missus. A 3 am start for me and caught a few zzz's after the game and didn't wake up till 10. Then on the go.

I think I saw 2 different games with the same 2 teams last night (this morning). The first one the Bucks showed that they could easily beat themselves. In the 2nd one they showed that perhaps ONLY the Buckeyes could beat the Buckeyes. When they finally pulled their collective act together they were kickin some butts out there. Or at least they were well able to keep up in a shoot out. Hyde was a BEAST and Brax finally settled down and started connecting with his passes.

100% agree that the pass D has got to challenge receivers or they WILL pay for it soon. Holy CRAP, 15+ yd cushions? Against NW? Are you serious? The good news there is that the D line is getting better pressure now, which helps the coverage situation.

Sadly, I also agree our beloved Bucks are not a valid NC contender at this point. Hopefully they get it figured out over the next few weeks.

And FINALLY, I accept much of the blame for the crappy play. I missed several steps in my pregame routine yesterday one crucial part was shaving with a fresh cartridge. I used the lectric shaver instead and let my wife cook the gameday breakfast. Really sorry guys, it won't happen again. At least the tailgate BBQ bacon, cheddar burgers rocked and may have been the difference between the W and a L.

So Northwestern...turns out we didn't curb stomp them like everyone thought we would. I still think NW is the best team we will play this year. Honestly the game went about how I expected it to, perhaps a tad more dramatic. Either way, this was a classic game and our boys just had the will to win. Game ball to Hyde and the offensive line. To come out of there with a win was huge.

I'm one that thought tOSU would win big. They didn't. Shit happens. It's not like tOSU played a great game tho. I'd say NW played as good as they could hope to. I'd say tOSU played about as bad a game as we've seen under Urban...and still won, at their place, at night. I think if Brax doesn't have missed opportunities and turnovers, it could easily have been 54-20. But a win is a win and I'll take it

them 2002 feels doe.

last night was GREAT. i was going apoplectic for the first three quarters. there were a bunch of Buckeye fans in the bar.
after it all ended, with much laughter and hilarity at that final play, two women came up and kissed me.
seriously, that last play was the whole game in a microcosm, but in reverse.

Las Vegas is a very special place to watch games due to the betting factor.
people who ordinarily wouldn't give two shits about a particular game go NUTS, and it's awesome.
