tOSU at Notre Dame, Sat. 9/23, 7:30pm EST, NBC

After watching this game I have to think it will prepare the defense for the Game later this season. It was like ND had watched that game the last 2 years and just copied and pasted.

So this bodes well for the buckeyes.

Gets them more prepared and focused for what is coming.

I can not even stomach the thought that the Bucks don’t get it together and win that game this year.

WINNER: OHIO STATE BUCKEYES

Green jerseys, a top-10 Notre Dame and the eyes of the college football world upon South Bend — it seemed like the luck really was with the Irish. Then nightmares of Bush Push pasts came to the forefront.
Leading No. 6 Ohio State 14-10 with seconds remaining, Notre Dame needed one stop for a statement win that would have sent Marcus Freeman’s program to a new stratosphere of contention. Then Chip Trayanum ran the ball one yard, dragging the Buckeyes over the goal and dashing the hopes of Irish fans across the country for what turned out to be a 17-14 Ohio State win; a moment that will hurt for a long time in South Bend given the Irish only had 10 players on the field.
The top-10 match proved to be more than anybody could have hoped for in a September game. High-level football between two good teams. Ohio State just snatched victory in the end, and it should feel great about it.
Shaky moments weren’t foreign to first-year starter Kyle McCord. He nearly threw a pick on the final drive and an intentional grounding call against him with seconds remaining nearly doomed Ohio State’s hopes. But none of that matters! McCord did what great quarterbacks do. He drove his team 65 yards in 1:25 for the game-winning score in the most hostile of environments. You can’t ask for much more.
Yet I’d argue Ohio State’s defense is the most promising aspect of Saturday night’s win. That unit cost the Buckeyes a national title last year. This year? The defense is carrying the team. Ohio State held Notre Dame to 5.5 yards per play. The Irish came into the week ranked sixth nationally averaging 8.27 yards per play. There were two massive fourth down plays on the first drives of each half for the Irish. The Buckeyes got the stop both times.
This Ohio State team is different. The defense is leading the way. The offense looks a bit shaky at times. But that’s OK. Ohio State doesn’t play Penn State for another month. Michigan isn’t on the schedule until late-November. The offense will have time.
If anything, Saturday showed the Buckeyes have a quarterback they can count on when it matters. And, perhaps more importantly, a defense capable of winning games for the first in years.

After the first and goal incompletion there was plenty of time to run a man on the field if it was noticed immediately. Ohio state doesn't hurry up and slowly walks back to line up. As Ohio state looks to their sideline for the playcall with 25 seconds on the play clock, Marcus Freeman takes off his headset. The offense doesn't set until 15 seconds left on the play clock - I don't think I believe Freeman knew they were short a guy and his excuse was just cover for incompetence. It would be hilarious if a coach in the booth tried to let him know but he had taken off his headset already.
The other thing is, the Buckeyes substituted (Chip for Hendo), so Freeman would definitely have been given time to run somebody onto the field before the snap with 3 seconds left. I think coming out with 10 after their timeout with 7 seconds left is more on DC Al Golden than Freeman, but Freeman deserves to be blamed for nobody noticing and getting the 11th guy out there for the play that beat them.

I can’t remember the sequence of events correctly, but did he take his headset off after Emeka caught the ball at the one or did he take it off after the 1st and goal incompletion?

How funny would it be if they were trying to tell him but he just didn’t have the headset on to hear them?

It was after the incompletion. Maybe with about 25 seconds on the playclock.

OK, who actually knew there was a Cheez-It "National Team Of The Week?"

From the FWAA’s news release:

It doesn’t get much closer, and it doesn’t get much better than the Ohio State Buckeyes' 17-14 win at Notre Dame on Saturday. The No. 6 Buckeyes scored on their final play from a yard out, essentially walking off past the No. 9 Fighting Irish in a memorable rally in primetime. For completing what was a 15-play, 65-yard drive to rally and win, the Buckeyes (4-0) are the Cheez-It National Team of the Week, as selected by the All-America Committee of the Football Writers Association of America.

Who's the cheese?

Just sayin': Apparently Ohio State is this week........

• Ryan Day's Ric Flair postgame interview was equal parts inspiring and hilarious – maybe next time he'll be sporting dark shades and flashing a solid gold Rolex. People will undoubtedly bash Day for calling out Lou Holtz, but in this Coach Prime Era of college football playing the disrespect card and delivering it with vigor and style will get you noticed. Nice guys finish last, and quiet guys don't make SportsCenter. And besides, college football is entertainment, so who can complain when a head coach is entertaining?
On the Morning Show on 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland, the hosts (Ken Carman and Anthony Lima) stated [paraphrase] that Ryan Day gave a Ric Flair interview inspired by Coach Prime. Maybe those guys read BuckeyePlanet....
