Green jerseys, a top-10 Notre Dame and the eyes of the college football world upon South Bend — it seemed like the luck really was with the Irish. Then nightmares of Bush Push pasts came to the forefront.
Leading No. 6 Ohio State 14-10 with seconds remaining, Notre Dame needed one stop for a statement win that would have sent
Marcus Freeman’s program to a new stratosphere of contention. Then
Chip Trayanum ran the ball one yard, dragging the Buckeyes over the goal and dashing the hopes of Irish fans across the country for what turned out to be a 17-14 Ohio State win; a moment that will hurt for a long time in South Bend given the Irish only had 10 players on the field.
The top-10 match proved to be more than anybody could have hoped for in a September game. High-level football between two good teams. Ohio State just snatched victory in the end, and it should feel great about it.
Shaky moments weren’t foreign to first-year starter
Kyle McCord. He nearly threw a pick on the final drive and an intentional grounding call against him with seconds remaining nearly doomed Ohio State’s hopes. But none of that matters! McCord did what great quarterbacks do. He drove his team 65 yards in 1:25 for the game-winning score in the most hostile of environments. You can’t ask for much more.
Yet I’d argue Ohio State’s defense is the most promising aspect of Saturday night’s win. That unit cost the Buckeyes a national title last year. This year? The defense is carrying the team. Ohio State held Notre Dame to 5.5 yards per play. The Irish came into the week ranked sixth nationally averaging 8.27 yards per play. There were two massive fourth down plays on the first drives of each half for the Irish. The Buckeyes got the stop both times.
This Ohio State team is different. The defense is leading the way. The offense looks a bit shaky at times. But that’s OK. Ohio State doesn’t play Penn State for another month. Michigan isn’t on the schedule until late-November. The offense will have time.
If anything, Saturday showed the Buckeyes have a quarterback they can count on when it matters. And, perhaps more importantly, a defense capable of winning games for the first in years.
