tOSU at Indiana, Sat. 9/2, 3:30pm EST, CBS

With the running clock teams won’t have to try very hard to reduce our offensive snaps. I think we need to consider more tempo as well. Way too many drives yesterday that were 3-6 minutes that only produced 0-3 points. That first touchdown drive took up like 6+ minutes for example. We had from what I can tell 15 or so less plays than typical. That’s huge for opposing defenses vs our offense and that concerns me vs a team like TTTTUN.
I was surprised to read that osu ran 67 plays and osu averaged 67.x plays a game last year.

I think they made a crucial mistake not attacking sideline to sideline with crossing routes when our OL wasn't able to buy time. Skinny pick plays with Egbuka or some short drags would have pulled the defense back a bit, got McCord into more rhythm, etc. but we kept trying to take the lid off. Their LBs were coming up so hard and corners were in man, there was oh so much yardage to be picked up off of simple 5 yard routes.
Plus Indiana CBS got hurt.

McCord's first start is not that different than CJ's first start on many levels. Both came against a B1G opponent and not a soup can. Both games involved clunky offensive play. CJ got the benefit of some big plays that Kyle did not (And Kyle missed some open deep throws - both balls he threw and balls he didn't) (I remember Trey took a wheel 75 yards and Garrett had a score where @DaddyBigBucks noted the only way he wasn't going to score was if he died of loneliness), but Kyle had a much better short and mid range game than CJ did.

If Marv doesn't step out of bounds, it looks slightly better for McCord as well. That's not on him, that's on Marv. Likewise, I don't recall who was on the 2021 O-Line, but I'm certain it was a better group than the current line, specifically at Tackle. That hurt McCord by way of comparison to CJs first start as well.

All to say, it's way too early, in my IMO, to declare McCord unable to take this team to the highest heights. I was not impressed with his first outing, but I'm not ready to make any sweeping conclusions just yet. It seemed to me he had better command than Brown did, although that's not particularly fair to Brown by me.
Pretty much concur.. a number of McCord's brain farts are fixable.. throwing too late mostly... and greatly aided in 2nd half by cakewalk routes
Bit concerning when he threw impossible passes to complete...
and his running vision... ugh.. Chip sealed off entire left half of field and Kyle ran left directly into it

My way-too-early concern is the OL... not in sync whatsoever.. which is understandable yet aggravating...
Hinzman showed he was a RS freshman; Jones/Friar have work to do... Simmons eval has already been noted; Jackson was only one I liked
Until the line improves dramatically not sure how much we can get out of the best WR room in the nation
I want to blame Henderson's performance on the OL but same line that Chip had.. just diff utilization or lack thereof

Sonny Styles is going to be outrageous

Yeah, Special Teams play was .... umm... let's do it this way...

I am at a complete loss why OSU has a dedicated ST coach if these are the results we're going to get.

I don't blame incompetent people for being incompetent.

I blame the people that hire/retain the clearly incompetent.

On the ST note, Proctor is going to cost us a big return (or more) against a good team. He is an absolute train wreck when asked to run down field and cover a kick. He plays too high, doesn't break down to make the tackle and just goes flying harmlessly by (unless he takes out one of our guys then I guess by definition his launch wasn't harmless).

Six years. Six fucking years. How do competent coaches not know what they have with a player after six years?

The same way a team drafts Trey Lance over Justin Fields. Sometimes people get caught up in a kids abilities and fail to evaluate if a kid is a player or not.

2. Spoke on this a bit yesterday but we’ve got to be willing to go down the field. There was zero downfield presence which allowed IU to take away the run. This is paramount to our success this year. If we aren’t going to trust this OL enough to allow our QBs to get the ball to 18, 2 and 4 down the field then it’s going to be tough sledding vs the better teams this year.

3. Really want to see Hayden. The one diss on any player I have is I’m so tired of seeing Henderson dance and get blown up in the backfield. I’m sure he’s still officially fast but he doesn’t play fast.

A big part of the problem was McCord immediately checking down to get safe completions. He missed a 50-60 yarder to Marv because of that, but it will change and get better as he gets more comfortable.

As for Henderson, I don't know what to think. He looked good early, but Indiana was getting immediate penetration on run plays and he often had no chance. I'd like to see a breakdown of the type of plays they used for Chip and if they were any different than for Henderson. If not, Henderson might end up being the 3rd down back instead of Chip.

I think what contributed to the lack of explosiveness was just the overall plan of attack. To me it was obvious that Ryan was hell bent on not making the same mistake as 2021 where he asked CJ to throw for 400 yards vs Oregon. He’s stated multiple times that we didn’t stick with the run enough and that was a disservice to CJ. Yesterday was coach Day sort of over compensating.

Agree. He seemed happy to limit mistakes and leave with a win. The only alarm bell for me was his stubbornness in short yardage. He's obsessed with getting the OL to convert using running plays that have a low success rate. It's clear what the offense will do on 3rd and short but it's not working.

Other than that, I think it'll be hard to look back and take much from this game. Openers are often weird and teams look so different 4-5 games in. Against Buffalo and FAU, I thought OSU might score 70 points after the 1st Q, but they limped to weird victories that caused concern. In 2014 & '15, OSU trailed Navy and VaTech at the half. Same in '17 with Indiana.

If McCord and the OL don't improve and OSU doesn't change their gameplan, I'd say you're looking at 8-4 or 9-3. Thankfully that's not how football works. McCord already showed improvement in the 2nd half, and I thought the OL was a bit better too. We just have to wait and see how much they can improve from game to game.

Didn't think the game was terrible...plenty of teaching moments, certainly. OL looked like it was splitting into double teaming on every down. Didn't see too much straight up blocking, but were all clumping toward the middle. Indy had some players out there as well (they're on schollies too). McCord grew before our very eyes Saturday. Thought his confidence grew continually. He in fact made some good throws, and several more missed by his hesitation - again, a confidence thing. A very good thing was the D. Seemed more cohesive than last year (which is should), and thought we got some looksees at young talent. We'll have a better idea against WKy, as they'll throw all over the lot. Sorry folks, the DL didn't/couldn't sack the passer as the pre-season writers implied they would on every down. Saw some good push, JT especially. Sawyer, not so much. Middle let some RBs go up the gut, but the LBers were there to stunt the damage. If we had to play ND today, believe it'd be a L. When comparing scores of the other top 10 teams, most of the opponents were of the high school variety. OK, game one is in the W column. There'll be some heavy work done this week and next. PS, camera wasn't on the sidelines, did anyone notice what the ratio of Day O calls, versus Hartline's? Some of them (four downs especially), looked Day-esque. But since Brian's never called the O plays, would expect some teaching/transition to occur. Anyway, Go Bucks!

Maybe, didn’t see much pressure on the QB. It was an issue last year too.

They ran it 32 times for 71 yards, and starter had 16 pass attempts for 58 yards.
DLine approach was correct. Stuff the run. I have no complaints about the defense in this game, but it's also not an opponent that we can take much away from.
41 has great moments (backfield stuffing early) and cringe moments (angles). I guess we get the good with the bad, but it does make me concerned when we play last 2-3 games again.
I liked that the 2s came in and performed at nearly the same level. Only weak link seemed to be when they went after #1 three plays in a row, and his really bad PI.

Without the benefit of rewatching the game (people were talking my ear off on it, so it was difficult at times to pay full attention), my thoughts:

1. OL looked pretty awful first half and Simmons was blocking grass most of the time. Second half they adjusted and played pretty well. A lot of the issues didn't come from getting physically beat, but missing assignments...which is good because that should improve the more this newly assembled OL plays together. Plus IU had a pretty solid scheme against us.

2. McCord played well overall imo. The INT was infuriating, you never throw across your body into traffic like that. But there were plenty of good throws and he seemed to lead well out there, and should improve. As to Brown, of course he didn't get much of a chance to show what he can do. But I am fine with it because it allowed McCord to get his feet under him and get in a rhythm, and Day admitted that was the reason and he wished Brown could have got in more but the game dictated that not happening. I expect more equal snaps against YSU.

3. I am as frustrated as most on Henderson. Part of the problem may be usage and often times the OL didn't do him any favors, but he just seems to lack the vision that Miyan and Chip have. He is at the point in his career where I don't see a lack of vision changing. Chip looked damn good and Miyan was his Meatball self breaking tackles. I just have concerns yet again we are picking up from last year in not being able to pick up short yardages with the run game.

4. Excellent defensive performance. Any time you hold a conference opponent to 3 points (any team really), then you did a great job. Of course they will have much better offenses to face and we won't know how much we have improved until ND and facing Hartman, but it was impressive nonetheless.

5. Individually on defense, it was nice to see Proctor make some plays on defense and Styles is going to be a monster. Burke looked to be back to his freshman form and made some really nice plays on the ball in air, and was all over the IU WRs. Eich and Steele looked like you expected them to look making plays in space and not missing tackles. On the DL, bit of a slow start but wore their OL down and started making plays. Hall looks back to form and healthy, and that is a must for our defense.

6. Individual performances on offense, it looked like Egbuka and MH Jr. were not getting open regularly. I will have to go back and keep an eye on that, but it looked like they were not getting much if any separation. Granted I know there were a couple times McCord didn't see them (the one where he checked down to a 3 yard out route when MH was streaking open at the least), but it was not the performance you would expect from our WRs. Then you also have that mental error of MH running out of bounds on what should have been a big TD, which is rare to see from him. Stover looked great though.

On OL, you always have to go back and watch, but it seemed Simmons will not grade out as a champion to say the least. Several times defenders were getting through the left side where Jackson picks up his guy and Simmons didn't even come close to picking up his guy. He did seem to pick it up in the second half though, so hopefully that is not going to be the norm. RB I already addressed above.

7. On special teams, Fielding looked pretty solid in his debut and it is nice to hit a couple on the road to settle him in. Mirco is still a beast. But of course the coverage on kicks and punts was abysmal and needs fixed. I will say that #12 is the best player on their team and I watched him absolutely torch ttun last year, so he is a hell of a return specialist. Nonetheless, it needs fixed fast.

8. Overall we won with a 20-point margin on the road against a B1G opponent. Granted IU's stadium is intimidating as a box of kittens and they will likely be near the bottom of the conference, we've got a lot of new faces at key positions and I expect to keep improving. I don't know if we know much more about this team than what we did going in and I don't think as fans we can take away much, but plenty of learning moments without a doubt for the players and coaches to improve on.

Onward to our home opener against YSU.
