While we still don't know who will be getting the nod at QB — and there's a good chance at this point that both guys get some playing time — whoever it is between Kyle McCord or Devin Brown will have the opportunity to throw passes to college football’s No. 1 pass-catcher, Marvin Harrison Jr., in addition to Emeka Egbuka and a treasure trove of other former four and five-star prospects. A now-healthy running back room features TreVeyon Henderson, Miyan Williams and a handful of other contributors who can be called upon when needed. The offensive line has some questions, but it’s hard to not have trust in this Ohio State offense to put up points.

Defensively, the Buckeyes should be improved across the board, with key additions in the secondary among the likes of Ja’Had Carter and Davison Igbinosun as well as returning starters Denzel Burke and Lathan Ransom and new starting safety Sonny Styles. Both starting linebackers return in Tommy Eichenberg and Steele Chambers, while J.T. Tuimoloau and Jack Sawyer look to anchor the defensive line, with Sawyer now back playing his natural position as a true edge rusher. Mike Hall Jr. and Tyleik Williams are your anchors up the middle, and there is reason for a ton of excitement about this defensive unit as a whole.

For the second time in three seasons, Ohio State will open up play against a Big Ten opponent, with Indiana on the docket this year after starting the 2021 campaign against Minnesota — both on the road. The Hoosiers enter the new campaign having won just two conference games in the last two seasons combined, finishing just 4-8 overall in 2022.

Indiana won’t publicly announce who won the starting job at quarterback this season, so the Buckeyes will have to prepare for both Tennessee transfer Tayven Jackson and redshirt freshman Brendan Sorsby. Whoever is throwing the rock, they will be happy to have wide receiver Cam Camper back following a torn ACL last October. Despite playing in just seven games last season, Camper still led the Hoosiers with 569 receiving yards and two TDs. The Hoosiers are hoping that hiring former Wisconsin offensive line coach Bob Bostad will help improve a group that finished second-to-last in the B1G in rushing, as well as eighth in passing.

Defensively, leading tackler Aaron Casey is back as the most productive player from a unit that ranked dead last in the Big Ten a year ago in both scoring defense and yards allowed. However, they did lose perhaps the group’s most talented player in linebacker Dasan McCullough, who transferred to Oklahoma. Indiana brought in second-team All-MAC defensive lineman Andre Carter to bolster a group that has had a tough time getting to the QB lately, recording just 37 total sacks over the last two seasons. In the secondary, Noah Pierre returns at the hybrid ‘Husky’ position having forced a team-high three fumbles last year.

I’ll never not be excited for the start of an Ohio State football season. Never. The day I don’t care or not feel excitement is the day I schedule my first psychiatry appointment to see if I’m suffering from depression.

Finally. Damn is this a good feeling.

First Look: Revamped Indiana looks for upset in hosting Ohio State for 2023 opener

For the third time in seven years, Ohio State will open a season with a Big Ten road game. We look at the third-ranked Buckeyes and their opener next Saturday at Indiana.

Week 0 is in the books and it is finally game week for Ohio State as the Buckeyes prepare to visit Indiana for their season opener next Saturday (3:30 p.m., CBS).

This game will open Ryan Day’s fifth full season as the Ohio State head coach. The Buckeyes turn the corner at quarterback as junior Kyle McCord and redshirt freshman Devin Brown have spent the preseason trying to earn the right to succeed C.J. Stroud as the starter. Day has not tipped his hand yet, although he could make an announcement at his weekly press conference on Tuesday.

This will mark the third time in seven seasons that Ohio State will open the season with a Big Ten game on the road. Both times previously, the Buckeyes struggled and trailed at halftime before rallying for the win in the second half.

In 2017, J.T. Barrett was in his senior year as the OSU quarterback and the Buckeyes were ranked No. 2 nationally in the preseason. OSU trailed host Indiana 14-13 at halftime before barreling to a 49-21 win in the second half.

Two years ago, Stroud was making his first start at quarterback for OSU as the fourth-ranked Buckeyes headed up to play a Thursday night opener at Minnesota. Amid a drizzle, the plucky Golden Gophers held a 14-10 halftime lead. But OSU righted the ship with a big second half – including a defensive touchdown – in a 45-31 win.

This time around, Ohio State is opening the 2023 season as the No. 3 team in the preseason Associated Press poll as well as in our own Preseason Consensus Poll. The Buckeyes, who were 11-2 last season, trail only defending national champion Georgia and defending Big Ten champion Michigan in the preseason voting.

Indiana, by contrast, is coming off a 4-8 season and a second consecutive year with a losing record. Coach Tom Allen, starting his seventh year as the Hoosiers head coach, will be pulling out all the stops. Certainly, Memorial Stadium figures to be rocking with close to 55,000 strong.

Steve Says: We stressed it above how Ohio State did struggle the last two times it went on the road to open a season against a Big Ten team. Indiana has absolutely nothing to lose and, if Allen can somehow get this ragtag roster all on the same page, perhaps they can put a scare into an Ohio State team that has much bigger fish to fry this season.

Just sayin': I guess they have to write something; but I don't think the game will be close. Ohio State by at least 4 or 5 TDs. Yeah, and the rocking 55,000 strong in the stadium will probably be over 50% Ohio State fans.....8D

I think this will be a bloodbath 56-17 type game at the end, but that we struggle early and get more of a fight than expected being in Bloomington. Everyone in the B1G wants to beat us in the worst way, so I am not counting my chickens early here.

That all being said, I hope we blow the doors off them from start to finish. Wtf is a Hoosier anyways?

Yea I was thinking the same, sloppyish start, maybe go into half only up something 14-3 (everyone complaining as always), then a 28ish point 3rd quarter to bust things open.

I see it as a 52-6 kind of game myself.

I’m so excited for the defense. I only hope we don’t give up a garbage time score or something. It always sucks winning 52-17 with 14 of the 17 being garbage.

We have it pretty good when we complain how we win lol

I'll go with 34-28. I never like these opening weekend conference games - and Indiana seems to be a little bitch to us. Just roll over and take the loss already.

Ohio State jumps out to an early lead of 17-0 about 5 minutes into the 2nd quarter, but then they hit walls with stupid penalties, bad ball bounces, and bad tackling. Halftime score is 20-7.
Third quarter appears to be a turn-around, as Ohio State takes a 34-7 lead pretty easily. But then more boofness by the Buckeyes, and the end of the third quarter is 34-14. A late score by Indiana, an onside kick recovery, and another late score back it 34-28. With 2 minutes left, we're nervous. But the Bucks recover the onside kick and we cry in our beers the rest of the week.

My score prediction builds in 10 garbage time points, guess I should have stated that. I don't see the IU offense being very effective against our one's (and many of the two's tbh) on defense, but when we extend the lead and put in a mix of two's and three's, I can see some garbage points.

But I am always one that doesn't get too bothered by points scored against reserves late on, I don't like it but if you dominate with your core group then it is window dressing on the stat sheet to me. Obviously different if they start making it close, but a 56-17 win on the road against a conference opponent in Week 1 would thrill me. Now I just have to be right lol.
