Game Thread tOSU at Cal Bears, Sep 14, 7 ET, Fox

Honestly, there's about 3 plays I want back:

1. The Roby push on the 61 yard score.

2. The RDS late hit. Poor discipline, although the hit was "close", Goff had clearly slowed. No reason to risk it.

3. I can't remember the Cal player, but he busted a tackle about 2 yards past the LOS...and ended up getting 20+

Teams will rack up yards, because on 2nd and 15 they are giving 10 yard passes all day. As long as Roby doesn't get beat one on one like he did yesterday, I'm pretty happy with that. The defense just needs to eliminate the big play, and this Cal game is more like 52-17.

I think the defense has shown enough to make me believe they will step up again. I also don't expect tOSU will see another team that runs 90-100 plays a game, a pace that really showed the weaknesses in the middle of the field for tOSU.

It's quite simple what happened to our defense, they were completely gassed and started taking shortcuts on their tackling and coverage plays. Look at the start of the game and the start of the second half. Our guys were fresh and flying all over the place. I think the long pass also had an effect on Roby's ego. He made a piss poor attempt at tackling on that play and then didnt seem to have his usual aggression later on. The fade for a TD was just a perfect pass and catch.

I don't know how you remedy keeping guys fresh when an offense goes that fast and runs that many plays - that's the reason people run that style of offense. The only way to beat it is to make plays on first and second down and get off the field on third down. One missed tackle could mean an extra four or five plays your defense is on the field each drive. That stuff adds up.

The same way we did before. Tressel Ball. Keep their offense off the field and your defense won't get gassed.

Until our defense can learn to stop the short yardage stuff over the middle and in the flat, they're going to get picked on. The good thing is that going deep on Ohio State won't happen often with a senior safety ready to make big plays.

The Ohio State run defense is solid, the deep passing defense is solid. Its the small stuff they have to learn to contain. Easily correctable in practice IMO.

PS. Coming into the game, Goff (Cal) was the #1 QB in the nation in terms of passing yards. Take that for what its worth.

I'm not even worried about the passing stuff as much - there was tons of room to run last night. That's gotta change and it's gotta change FAST.

"It's ok, because we here at Cal are holier than thou. We're better than you, and we don't need to explain why. We may have lost, and our defense may be horrible, but that's not going to stop me from forcing my agenda of sounding like a whiny piece of shit."

Comments:
This article is an embarrassment to the Chronicle, and may partially explain the poor readership and financial struggles.

As a Cal Alum, who grew up in Berkeley, who was at this game I am ashamed of the tone of this story.

So many themes you could focus on including, but not limited to, the sweeping views, the friendly OS fans, the bands playing each other's fight songs etc..all of which speak to collegial feel of the day. Cal got schooled on the field but all of the above removed much of that sting.

However, to take it the next step and and offer a snobby comparison between the two institutions ruins the whole point.

I don't need to belittle the other school to feel good about mine.

I don't know why people here would be upset by academic trash talk. It's done all the time on this board.

It's not the academic trash talk about that article that annoys the shit out of me... It's the fact that he's being a smug douche-canoe about the whole situation, pretending not to care about a game he clearly cared a lot about prior to the game.
