Game Thread tOSU at Cal Bears, Sep 14, 7 ET, Fox

damn you people bitc* about osu defence do u forget 9 new starters .last year cali scored 28 layoff the defence they done well .cal is gonna give rest of the teams they play problems so be happy with the win ..esp up to now cali was the best team osu played so far .instand of knocking osu give cal some credit natural born complainers

Cal's offense is certainly on the up-tick, and you'd be a fool to think Goff wasn't likely to be really good. Some of the throws he made were PERFECT, really impressive for a freshman.

But, the OSU defense gave up 34 points to a team that dropped 37 on an FCS school and 30 on Northwestern. There wasn't anything special about the defenses performance Saturday, and nothing earth-shattering bad.

I don't think people are complaining as much as noting areas of improvement. This team doesn't have aspirations to be good, they have aspirations to be the best team in the country.

As far as I can tell, everyone is thrilled with the win, happy with the offense, and expecting the defense to improve.

A little more sober this time around for the replay, so here are my thoughts:

1. Way to set the tone right away. Stifling defense and a masterful play call on that first touchdown.

2. Unreal play out of KG, honestly don't even know if Braxton would have done that well. Two perfect passes right off the bat. I know the Cal and SDSU defenses are not all world, but he is putting the ball in some tight windows and making the right reads. Showed improved touch on his deep balls and was very sharp on short-intermediate throws. Having a backup of this caliber is unheard of anymore with transfers.

3. I really like our personnel use. Kept going vertical with Devin Smith instead of trying to get him the ball in space and got Dontre to the edge. Using Chris Fields in the red zone. Great stuff. I want to see these tight ends we speak of though...another year, another year of not using talented TEs.

4. Shazier = the best linebacker in the country. Unreal athlete.

5. Roby really struggled. He has some work to do on his fundamentals...has the tools to be the best but he is not there yet. Doran Grant was in the hip pocket of his guy all day though, another great game for him. Overall in the secondary, there were too many guys wide open deep that the QB just plain missed on. Easily could have been a close game if Goff makes the throws in the 1st half. I'm all for bend and don't break defense but it is a little disconcerting where the only thing preventing a break is lack of execution from our opponent.

6. Bosa is freaking amazing, again. If he isn't about to make the sack, his long arms are in the air at the line influencing the pass. Also stout against the run. Just disruptive in general. Defensive line in general was impressive, loved seeing Steve Miller and Chris Carter get in on some big plays. They really showed up well despite the style of offense Cal plays...usually it is tough for the DL to get there in time to make noise when the offense gets the ball out quick like that.

7. Jordan Hall is putting together a great season. No nonsense, gets right up field in a hurry and can make a man miss if need be.

8. Offensive line play was absolutely stellar. Great pace and they really got a lot of movement. I think they savor a 4th and short, it is always blocked up so well on the zone give. Also a ton of time for KG, nobody got near him really. The TEs also were getting after it blocking as well.

9. Christian Bryant really had a good game. Ball hawk back there and was putting his hat in on some tackles per the usual. Barnett needs to pick it up though, some break downs in coverage and missed tackles again.

10. I'm not too down on the defense overall. With Cal's tempo, they are going to score some but overall I thought we made the plays when we needed them. Plus I think Cal has some talented offensive players and they made a few plays. Plenty of talent out there for us though and we are only going to keep improving. Really we just struggled on the jet screen and I think that was just an adjustment we didn't make schematically. Either that or we need a LB not named Shazier to hold down fort in the middle of the field and take out some of those blockers.

11. Good showing, I really liked our effort overall on the road. We've got plenty to work on but I really like this team after Week 3.

Not holding on to interceptions is hurting this defense. Inexcusable. That and not wrapping up. Those things are correctable Got to wrap up the Wiscy and Wildcat runners or it will come back to bite us! But the defense as a whole is further along than last year and getting better every week.

Expect to see a lot of screen passes from the opposition until we do a better job on those. On Cal's TD screen pass play it looked to me like C. Brown got blocked in the back and there was no call. Brown was watching the WR and an offensive lineman hit him straight in the back than landed on him for good measure. I know the rule states if you have previous contact you can get away with a block in the back but I didn't see any previous contact.

That said, the Cal QB looks like a real future star. Northwestern and Ohio State are not exactly easy first defenses to cut your teeth on. With a week to heal and prepare, and after watching Oregon in the early minutes against a very ordinary Tennessee, I think Cal gives Oregon fits.

Somebody has to knock off Oregon for tOSU to get to the title game, so it might as well be Cal, esp since we already beat them so we don't have to worry about who the Oregon killer will then lose to.

Cal has the most efficient passing attack in the country and no one here isn't happy with a win. Not much complaining going on in this thread anyway. Just picking deficiencies in the D and what they need to work on to become a Natl Contender. That's why it's the Defense discussion thread.

If I remember the talk last year, the tOSU defense was supposed to not play tight, press coverage, but sit back and be ball hawks. Major change. (I cannot remember what the terminology is.) The scheme did exactly what it was supposed to do in delivering interception opportunities. tOSU would have looked awesome, if the interceptions had been made, which as others pointed out, did not happen.
