Game Thread tOSU at Cal Bears, Sep 14, 7 ET, Fox

5+ sacks, 2 + picks and less than 250 yards throwing for Cal. That's my goal for our D. If we can get that I will be happy.

What I would like to see tomorrow is another TD pass from Jordan Hall. The question is, who would he throw it to? Kenny G? Heuermann? Wilson?
I know UFM might be saving it for the Meatchicken game but we all know Hall can do it!

Bucks, 48-11.

If they plan on a dink and dunk type passing game, we have play the corners tight. Get physical off the ball and disrupt the timing in the backfield. With both corners back, there is no excuse not too as they are both physical players.

Man I hope you are right with that score. But as someone else posted earlier in this thread, we never seem to go out west and dominate like we'd expect to. Even going back to the days of Art Schlichter. Obviously Coach Meyer brings it differently so perhaps our showing will be improved.

Ha, Ha....good one! Which of the 3 stats is more improbable ya think? I'd say they are all a bit lofty but possible. 3 sacks, 1 pick and 300 yards or less through the air? As I have said a few times in this thread I'd like us in dime most of the time with a 4-2-5 when we suspect a run play or whatever you would call it with the 5th DB being the star position. Since we have the NCAA '14 element, that's the way I would play it anyway! I just really like our chances of forcing this young QB into making mistakes. Yes I know the young pup has put up gawdy numbers in the first 2 games but look at the competition. I respect NW but more for their offense than defense. I think we run the ball down their throats and control the clock. I think we will get pressure with a 4 man front if we play it that way and I really like our secondary to shine if we do that. I don't know who has the best coverage skills between Pitt Brown, Tyvis and Bell but I'd love to see one of those 3 with Roby, Grant, Reeves and our 2 safeties. I really like that line up.

I'm not sure which is more improbable. I think the passing yards will depend on our scheme. I know people hate the 'soft' coverage, but as a non-football coach I view that scheme as: OK, you're not going to beat us.. we are going to give up the 3 and 5 yard passes early on a series if you want them, but we are NOT giving up a game breaking play and getting burned on a double move. If we employ the soft bend but don't break coverage, I can see Cal racking up yards, but not points.

If Cal takes the quick routes, 5 sacks will be tough - if they attempt to torch us deep, I can see this D-line getting after it the way we all hoped they would pre-season.

I don't see any of it improbable, but, if that's what it will take for you to be 'happy' - I will try and stay away from the thread immediately following the game as the sky may be falling. (I know you don't really mean that, too)

I think against lesser competition at home, we go with the soft D as you really don't want to give up a big play to an underdog and have the home fans start to turn on you. Will be interesting to see what we do with some starters back in the mix on the road at the left coast.

For the record, I really like this team - to me - when they turn it on they score at will. They turned the key for the 1st quarter of the opener, and then left it running throughout the second quarter of the second game. If my theory is correct, we should be able to dominate this Cal game. If my theory is wrong, I'll be going heavy on the makers mark Saturday night chain smoking enjoying a good game.
