Washington's tailgating was nowhere near what we do...even Hawaii's tailgaters blow them away. But, Washington's tailgates are in the parking lot immediately adjacent to the stadium, while the larger portion of ours is away from The Shoe in the RV parking lots, which may mislead visitors who spend most of their time evaluating our tailgating prowess based on what's next to the stadium vice the total area.

Different definitions of the term, I suppose. There are always going to be some incidents in any congregation of that size, but as you said it's the isolated incidents that need to be dealt with, not the congregation as a whole.

scUM fans being harrassed, beaten, screamed at, hit with flying objetcs etc? I see two major problems 1) some of those bottles still had beer in them 2) far too many misses.

Very true, and I've never maintained that it's everyone or even close to a majority who are the problem. When, however, you have and estimated 250K within a mile radius of Ohio Stadium for big games, even if it's only one-half of one percent that are the "problem element" you still have over a thousand people in a compact, densely crowded area committing felonies and serious misdemeanors. That to me is a "general problem" and a reason why our gameday environment gets the rap that it does. Let me put it this way, if you had a thousand people on a given Wednesday in Times Square doing the same crap, you wouldn't have the NY newspapers, mayor's office and NYPD shrugging their shoulders and writing it off to a "few bad apples." You'd have a crackdown of epic proportions.

Unfortunately, both the city and state authorities that Holbrook brought in weren't interested in dealing with the real problem and could care less about Ohio State's reputation. Each had its own agenda. The state liquor authorities in Ohio have been on a religious crusade to harass social drinking since Hope Taft got her hands on the department in the late '90s and purged out all the old timers replacing them with handpicked neo-prohibitionists.

The city, on the other hand, simply jumped at a chance to do some "revenue farming." Why go to the hassle to arrest a couple of hundred people for actual crimes when you'd need to go to the expense of having to process them, try them, pay a city prosecutor, pull the cop off the street to testify and so on when you could write a couple of thousand $200 citations that have no additional costs associated with the fine collection.

I would like to know how much revenue this anti drinking purge at Ohio State games has brought into city coffers. I'll bet it's a lot which is why the city has already announced that they're going to keep it up no matter what change in policy Gee might have.

I was at both these games, and I honestly felt that the PSU game was a step up in behavior from the Texas game. The visitors from UT were actually afraid, which is embarassing considering how nice they were to Buckeyes in Austin. The PSU game didn't feel nearly as hostile as the Texas game, but maybe that was just me.

Speaking of which, I can't believe Texas didn't make this list - what a great scene that was, and I'd put 6th street after the game up there with any other scene.

...We are the only school in the Big Ten that doesn't allow drinking at private, parking lot tailgates. That's frickin' ridiculous.

I still can't believe this - Lane should defiintely be policed better, but groups of families and, ahem, older alumni and supporters shouldn't scare anyone.

Look no further than youtube's documentation of the 2002 scUM game.. but 1.) its much better now than it was and 2.) buckeye fans need to take it upon themselves to tell a fellow buckeye to shut the fuck up every now and again, IMO.

I've seen plenty of stupid shit on my weekly walk from Lane & Kenny down to the 'shoe.. and i'm starting my drinking at 8 and 9 am. In our defense, its no dumber than the shit i've seen at other stadiums, be it Purdue, Iowa, MSU, or IU..

The texas fans that hung out at our tailgate all day loved us and the pig we roasted.. every fan base, especially ones as big as tOSUs is going to have bad "fans".. take it amoung yourself to police the stupid ass idiots who still boo when JT runs the ball on 3rd and 20 from his own 5.

Getting back to the original topic, I know it's kind of old. I think there is an important distinction between "fan support" and "tailgating". tOSU is obviously top 10 in fan support, I think where are tailgating might suffer is that it's so spread out. The stadium lots aren't very big, a lot of the parking lots are pretty far away, the Lane Avenue scene is cool but sort of commercialized. I can't say I've been all that many places but if you look at say..Michigan where they have the HUGE grassy area at the high school and the stuff the golf course area as well you have significantly large tailgating areas that stretch as far as the eye can see. If it wasn't filled with doucher Michigan fans you could see where it would be a fun time.


In terms of university policies, someone mentioned alumni harassment, I think the worst thing which still goes on is the STUDENT harassment. When I lived at the Party Barn on Lane (pictured in avatar) the CPD's favorite stunt would be to send undercovers up onto the porch to ID and arrest like 5 or 6 people (out of hundreds there) for underage drinking. They'd then throw them in the slammer for 18+ hours just for the hell of it. I thought it was pretty pathetic since all your really doing is spoiling a couple of kids days and making a few bucks. It might be different if there was some issue with the party in general but they were really just filling their quotas. The apartment was closed off, no one got in uninvited or anything, besides them. Of course they do the same thing all over campus but that spot in particular obviously got a lot of attention. The whole initiative to do this was started by Ohio State in partnership with the CPD obviously..at some point a school has to show some respect for it's students.

ohio state has killed the tail-gating and RV stuff. I have 3 different parties that I check out and the RV one was so far away that it kills you if you drink at all. I saw 3 different groups of cops with dogs walking all around the RV and I couldn't shut up about it. I had a few lawyers around me so I had some fun. The cops are their to check for any open containers and if you get caught its a 250 fine.They have to be in a cup. Each year it gets worse.
