Tony "Benedict" Alford (meh)

He is an absolute fool to go to Ann Arbor.

Chip Kelly is a running game guru. Alford had a good early run but fell off the mark the last three years, albeit with a lot of that deficit due to line play. I wondered if they would be clashing. Woody was pissed off that Bo stole his playbooks and then went to TCUN. Don't know what Alford has seen about Chip Kelly's offense but it can't be finished in its design yet and whatever the heck Alford was doing...um...heck no.

We all have the chance to make foolish moves that define our career badly. Tony Alford just made his. Two years at TCUN, a firing, and a life in the MAC.

Yeah I don’t understand the move for his career at all. He could have finished out his last year with an elite tandem in Henderson and Judkins. This would have freed him to look for an OC or HC role with a monster bullet on his resume.

A lateral move to go up north (with what they are facing)? Makes no sense

Going to a dumpster fire that's bracing for sanctions could actually work out if She-ron Moore gets a show-cause. Alford could backdoor his way into an interim head coach job.

Zach Smith is saying that this move is somewhat personal between Alford and Day evidenced by every other coach getting extended while Alford got a pay cut on his one year left. And Day told the whole staff after the bowl game that their jobs weren't guaranteed so you can't fault Alford for taking a long term deal from a place that wants him. Especially when Day gives his useless buddy a two year deal with a raise just to fire him after one with the second year paid out in a pretty clear case of using taxpayer funds to enrich a friend. And you have Hartline next to you getting paid coordinator money when his receivers can only pay flag football - directly affecting the run game.

You can fault him for the destination but that's the place with money that's having a hard time attracting coaches. And maybe he has dreams about sticking it to Day.
I listened to the Menace pod today, and Smith said it was a business decision about stability, and there seemed to be a feeling of being disrespected because every other coach was getting multi year deals.

I however, did not get a take away that Alford hated Day. Obviously things were not peachy, but hate is a strong word.

The point that kind of gave me a "oh yeah that is something to think about" from Smith and Drew is questioning Day's ability to read the room so to speak. Questioning his ability to be a CEO. I choose to withhold judgment, and believe there may be a upgrade coming (hopefully quick). Also, Smith and Alford are friends, so take the credibility notch down.

Again, to think that Day is the one with the issue “reading the room” is a huge leap here. I’m quite confident Day knew what he was doing would encourage Alford to find an opportunity elsewhere. I’m also fairly confident Day didn’t think Alford would take that opportunity at the school’s arch rival in the midst of spring practice. To bring back looking in the mirror, maybe Alford needs a little help understanding how that move makes him look—and almost certainly outside of Columbus as well.

I was just relating Smith's take. However, I guess the counter point to what you are saying is sometimes leadership takes giving people straight and direct answers in regard to their future, and not letting things fester. I don't think anybody has ever accused Meyer and Saban of not just being straight at the get, and that is why they succeeded. Everything should be analyzed as a possibility. Why would Day be under the belief that Alford to Scum wouldn't be a possibility? If this came as a total surprise then that is a read the room type of thing. Some things with Day's tenure can be labeled as fair criticisms, such as giving Fleming a 2 year contract, and maybe Dennis as well. I don't think Day was totally caught off guard with what happened with Alford, so probably that was not a read the room type of thing. The timing is weird for sure. What that means? IDK.... I can't anwer for what happened with Alford, as I am not in the program.

There is probably more there that we will never know. My take: Day was probably walking a tight rope in trying to keep Henderson on board, while also not giving Alford love.

With that said, I think Day is a great coach. He is growing. Every move this off season was an upgrade, and I think whomever OSU gets will be great, and a upgrade.

I only listen to Smith when I’m out of all other Ohio State content, but I think it’s funny that he’s extremely critical of his replacement, and seems to be extremely supportive of the guys directly connected to Meyer—Dennis and now Alford. It’s pretty clear what motivates the angle he takes on things (what will reduce or advance his relationship with Meyer, and petty bullshit about his replacement who most people consider way better at it than he was) which is pretty important context to keep in mind when you consider the things he says.
He is not extremely critical of his replacement on the show. He just points out the fact that they don't block anymore. Kirk Barton says the same about the non-blocking and I believe the two of them over you until I see your highlight reel. Ohio State won a national championship with a team of blocking receivers under Zach Smith. And you may not realize this but Zach's receivers were not fullbacks.

If the 2023 receivers cared to get their Louis Vuitton jerseys a bit dirty then maybe Hartline could claim a championship a well. Keep in mind that Zach brought in Olave, Garrett Wilson, and Jameson Williams. Hartline can simply buy recruits today. If you have something you want to share about how "most people consider" Hartline a way better coach then please do let us know exactly what that is. Because it seems like that's a closely-guarded secret outside of recruiting, which is not as clear cut as football fan simpletons preach.

I am legally required to comment on Alford, so: Fuck the cunts up north.

Doesn't make any sense unless he was shown the door and did it out of spite.

I sure wasn't in the room, but one can read into this a complete breakdown in the Day-Alford relationship. When everyone gets 2-year renewals and you don't, everyone knows your performance review didn't just go badly, you left the room smoking from the heat and coaches everywhere know it.

A one-year renewal and salary cut says, "We've talked about this, 2024 is your last chance. The door is over there." Add it all up, and he will look back on this as an incredibly stupid career decision.
