Tom Herman (Former Head Coach FAU Owls)

Frustrating sequences notwithstanding, Ohio State, playing with their third string quarterback, just put up 537 yards and 35 points on Alabama. Even if it is a down year for Bama, that is amazing.

EDIT - to remove blame for mind-numbingly stupid pass play.

I am celebrating and am super happy and I love you Tom but get your head right for next game. That pass on first down was the worst coaching mistake here since I don't know when. The calls in the redzone and when we were backed up on our own goal line were really bad. Fix it. #15 is the most underrated player in the NCAA give him the football
That pass was called by UFM, not Tom Herman. UFM admitted it in his post-game interview.

Yes, but who knows the discussion being had on the headsets when Bama had the box stacked on 1st down - with two timeouts, I kind of liked the idea of the pass there, but hindsight made it look awfully dumb.

Check this out - the reverse pass:

Its already been covered many times over now, but that pass play was called by Urban. Coach Meyer said (paraphrasing) that he wanted his players to get a score and confidence.

I think we can put to bed any thoughts that Herman is distracted by the Houston job. He will be missed. Great game.

Yeah, I posted that before Meyer said that it was his call. I'll edit it.

So, the plan of attack for this final mission seems pretty straight forward, no?

I mean, if you rack up nearly 300 yards of rushing against Alabama, my hope- and my sole resonating sense of calm for this Championship- is that preparing and executing against Oregon should seem like a breeze.

I am not sure how the defense will fare against the heady and shifty Heisman QB, and my guess is it won't always be pretty. What I do hope to lean on is knowing that this offensive line and this running stable, mixed with inside and outside designs (which Herman underratedly did wonders against Bama), should absolutely f'n destroy Oregon's defense.

I think Herman knows what he has to cook with now. Time to fire it all up one last time and finish.

I will say that Oregon's defense is much better than they traditionally are in terms of scoring...however, having Ekpre-Olomu out at corner (one of the best in the country) will hurt them. They have a lot of athleticism and are not undersized by any means...they are built to stop an offense like ours. I have full confidence that Herman & Co. will put up points but just wanted to caution that they are not a doormat defense like in the past.

Who are we going to replace Herman with after the CCG?
Likely moving Warriner up to OC and hiring a new QB coach. Shouldn't be much of a dropoff. Warriner was the OC of some really strong Kansas offenses under Mangino in 2007-08...yep, Kansas was actually pretty good for a short spell. 12-1 and won the Orange Bowl behind a potent offense in 2007, IIRC.

*Edit, in fact Warriner was KU's OC from 2007-09, resulting in the following:

2007-- 42.8 ppg, 479.8 ypg
2008-- 33.4 ppg, 432.4 ypg
2009-- 29.4 ppg, 422.4 ypg

Given the talent level KU attracts, that's pretty damned impressive. Also, offensive stats have increased significantly since the end of the last decade. So while those numbers may not look as eye-popping by today's standards, they were quite good 5-7 years ago.

They've surrendered 27+ points five times including 41 against Cal. Had FSU not shit all over themselves they would've put up 40+ (had 528 yards of offense). Where Oregon excels is turnover margin (#2 in the country at +20 for the season). If we keep the turnover margin even, or maybe even be on the plus side, then Oregon won't nearly be as effective. Here are some other interesting defensive stats for Oregon:

Total Defense ..................... 84 ...421.90 ypg
Rushing Defense ................... 49 .. 156.10 ypg
Passing Yards Allowed ............ 108 .. 265.90 ypg
Team Passing Efficiency Defense ... 50 .. 123.59
Red Zone Defense .................. 66 ... 83.33 pct
3rd Down Conversion Pct Defense ... 82 ... 41.60 pct
First Downs Defense .............. 119 .. 321.00

They also have some problems with committing penalties:

Fewest Penalties Per Game ........ 116 .... 8.07 ppg
Fewest Penalty Yards Per Game .... 115 ... 72.00 ypg

Lastly, they are 77th in both net punting and KO return defense.

Kind of hard to gauge the rush D and pass D stats considering that most teams fall behind early and have to throw. I'm thinking the run D is probably a bit worse than shown, and the pass D slightly better than the numbers indicate (though, losing their top Corner isn't going to be helpful).
