Urban is giving him an opportunity but Tebow will have to earn a roster spot. Teammates will know if he deserves it or not.

Urban's a rookie HC. Handing a spot to your favorite nephew is not going to win over your locker room, or football games.
Agree, and this reeks of Urban hiring the terrible LB coach for the Buckeyes because he was in his wedding. So not a surprising move by Urban. But still a head scratcher for his 1st year in the pros

Selling a metric shit ton of tickets and merchandise might shine on your owner a bit though.
Merchandise sales will go up, but this team is terrible! And a backup TE/H back isn't going to matter all that much. Tebow can be a massive distraction, just look at NE the small time he was there and reporters were clamoring for an interview, and Belichek emphatically turned them down because he saw no reason in an interview with a 3rd string QB. I hope this gamble works out because Tebow is a distraction, because he's so beloved. It's a gift and a curse, because how's that going to play when Lawrence was picked #1 overall to be the franchise QB and face of the team, NOT TEBOW. But we're already seeing Lawrence becoming an afterthought. And maybe that's Urban's goal, to steer away criticism from Lawrence and place it at Tebow. Problem is, 1st interception from Lawrence, and the fans are going to want him benched for Tebow. How's that going to affect the psyche of a kid who's been the best at every level he's played and been the leader. When the Jax boo birds come flying(and they will), and when they scream for Tebow to play QB(they probably will) what will happen. And if he does stay at TE, what happens if the starting TE drops a pass and the fans boo, that's going to be a massive distraction...
Only Urban F. Meyer would make this decision...

I think you guys are confusing Boston/NY sports media and fans with the fine folk of lower Georgia/north Florida.

Urban, Tebus and Lawrence are all heroes down there and the team has, pretty much, always sucked. There aren't going to be any fan revolts or anything like it for quite some time, if ever.

It's like people going to see a band, that was popular when they were kids, today. It doesn't matter that the 70 year old guys in the band suck now. It's a nostalgia thing.

Folks in the Jax footprint have themselves two white, god fearing southern Christian boys to root for. That plays down there, trust me.

The true hilarity will be if Lawrence has a rough game and fans start chanting for Tebow. Fans are dumb enough to do that sort of thing, and apparently JAX fans are as dumb as they come. Urban may be second-guessing the Timmah thing at that point, assuming he's actually on the active roster.

So if Urban actually cuts Tebus, does that kill his honeymoon with the fans before it even starts?

He's already betrayed the UF faction of the Jax fanbase (in their eyes) once. He's not southern and he's not the right kind of Christian so he's got a lot less wiggle room.

I put almost no thought into the potential Tebus vs Sunshine controversy. I just don't see it getting to a fever pitch down there. They care less about pro football than they do other things and Sunshine checks the boxes for other things. He'll have to be a pretty big bust for them to get on him.

You mean like a Blake Bortles size bust, Blaine Gabbert sized or Justin Blackmon sized bust?
Jacksonville definitely has precedent on screwing things

I agree with @Jake , I think the first signs of struggle from Lawrence and fans will yell for Tebow. And that could set the franchise back further. I mean they are already filming Tebow walking around practice... WALKING! Not one word has been uttered about their young franchise QB, but Tebow already has top jersey sales... That speaks volumes already

Will the next top draft pick that busts or gets hurt for the Browns or Bengals throw the fanbase into a frenzy? Is there any farther to be set back than we-just picked-#1-overall?

It's a college football mad region that's used to the NFL team sucking and worships the ground Tebus walks on. They are going to snap up any chance they get to see him in a Jag's jersey (or buy one) but thinking they will seriously be calling for him to play QB if Lawrence struggles is a bit of a reach. No one this side of Ann Arbor (besides Josh McDaniels) is dumb enough to think Tebow was ever a legit NFL QB.

I think the love for him is more nostalgic, and a second chance to see him in a lot of ways, than anything else. ESPN might try to stir some shit up given the high profile nature of Meyer and Lawrence but all in all the average Jags fan will deal with a Lawrence bust realization by asking who the Gators or Dawgs play that week.

Logically, it would be absurd for there ever to be any such controversy. But the dudes with Tebow posters on their bedroom ceilings don't seem to be into logic.

Oh I don't know....there was one glorious post throw that looked pretty legit to me......fuck Shitzburgh...

One of my favorite plays in NFL history, made possible by Polamalu cheating up on the run and no longer having the speed to get back in position.

Getting eliminated from the playoffs by Tebow's arm.
