Tim Duncan agrees to a pay cut.

"Duncan has reached agreement with the Spurs on a two-year, $40 million extension that figures to give the team enough salary-cap flexibility to continue to surround him with a competitive support cast in the waning seasons of his career, two sources with knowledge of the deal said Monday.

...what is notable about the deal are the terms: Although Duncan is eligible to receive a two-year extension worth about $51 million under the NBA's collective bargaining agreement, he agreed to nearly $11 million less because it could afford the Spurs greater flexibility to pursue free agents after the 2009-10 season."

As a fan you have to love this kind of stuff, Duncan just continues to show why he is one of the greatest.

141,

You've proven yourself over the years to be a great poster here and a GREAT Buckeye fan, so I won't attack you personally on this one, but I will attack the content.

FUCK Tim Duncan, and his alleged "team first" action. The guy signed a 2 year contract for $40,000,000. I don't know how much the average "Planet" poster makes a year, but I'll say that it will take me about 850 years to make what Duncan will make in the next two years. Am I supposed to respect that? These Pro salaries are so out of control they're like a fucking pinball game. The $$$'s don't even matter, it's all about the number, and they have no concept of what the "number" really is.

Alex Rodriguez signs a contract for 10 years and $252,000,000. That would have been for $25,000,000 a year but the greedy mutherfucker for whatever reason needed the extra $2,000,000 a year. "Joe Buttfuck" on BP needs to work a $50,000.00 a year job for 40 years to make what his "Add-On" number was.

Joe Torre gets on TV and whines about how he was "insulted" by his $5,000,000 contract offer from the Yankees. I'd gladly go down to Public Square in Cleveland and stand naked with my little shriveled dick trying to wave in the wind if I had a $5,000,000 check in my hand.

I understand what you're trying to point out here, but my list could go on-and-on forever. Don't look at Overpaid Professional ahtletes if you're looking to set someone aside as a "swell dude" who's already made $100,000,000 in his career yet trying to be a "team player" in the process.

Mt best example of "Team Player" is Michael Doss, A returning Two-Time Concensus All-American whom was all set to leave us after the 2001 season for $$$ in the 3,000,000 range. This was a kid from nothing, who had nothing, yet passed up the $$$ to return to schooland play for a Championship that NO BUCKEYE fan ever saw coming.

Again, I love your posts and contributions to this site 141, you just picked a subject that will always rub me wrong.

Peace. "Dubs."

The $$$ all around is out of control, which means you have to keep the big picture in view. Numbers from the 04-05 season: the spurs are worth $350 million. $121 mill in revenue.

Honestly, I have to think Tim Duncan is worth a lot more than $20 million in revenue, season tickets, attracting & keeping talent, etc. Give them Darko Milicic instead and their value freefalls.

On the contrary, I don't think ARod is worth anywhere near his contract.

I'm not much of a baseball guy, but I was under the impression that 5 mill was intended to be a low offer which he'd surely refuse, freeing them from the responsibility of firing him. But the general point stands.

 Would you do it for 100k?

Jwins,

The $$ figures you mention are why I Can't afford to go to a game.

And YES I'd do it for a $100,000. Hell I'd do it for $25,000. You set up a donation site for this debacle and I'll donate half the winnings to BP.

As long as the owners want to pay it to stay competitive, I'm all for the players getting paid.

The owners that don't pay for talent, like the recently deceased "Dollar" Bill Wirtz and the Chicago Blackhawks who weren't competitive for nearly a decade because he refused to pay to get the people needed to keep up with Detroit or Colorado or Dallas.

Is it out of control? Yes. Are these players almost without exclusion over-paid? Undoubtedly. However, until the fans stop filling up football stadiums and ballparks, it's not going to change.

I'm guessing, but from the sounds of it, this works out to about 10K/inch.

I agree about the overpmts to atheletes but this is more about a fair share of what the size of the pie that is major sports. The owners are going to make as much money as they can. They will make that amount of Gross revenues whether they pay Duncan 2 dollars or 40 mill. So if he can get that much then the money goes to him instead of the owners and that's fine with me.

Duncan never says squat, never hits fans, never spits on his coach or the refs, never is arrested, never has been connected with steroids or drugs.
Duncan scores approx 24 points per game and rakes in around 15 rebounds.
he controls the game he is in and is a hall of famer in waiting.
Now the truth of the matter is that the Spurs had 51 mill available and Duncan told them to use the 11 million for players to build the team.
Thats not bad. He is a good guy.
I don't know who you blame for the huge dollars involved in sports and the prices which keep me from going to all the games I want to.
I get to see the Bucks in the shoe once a year and I could afford to go more but that money is an amount I would be aware of spending and is an amount which keeps a lot of fans from going at all. Whose fault is that?
tOSU? TV? We the fans for paying the prices to see our beloved Bucks?
The sad part is that it is not and cannot be turned around. If all sports fans simply stopped going to any event the owners couldn't lower the prices for long because of the cost of the physical plants involved.
It's like my bad back , I have to live with it.

Yeah, and a fifth of the world has less than $600 in purchasing power a year, so :tibor:

What the hell is everyones problem? He was trying to point out that Tim Duncan isn't doing jack shit worth worshiping him over. Why hype up something that is so fucking meaningless to Mr. Duncan? He already has enough money that he never has to work again and I'm sure should he choose to set up trusts for his family they would never need to earn money for at least a few generations. Also your fifth of the world's earning power figure and use of the violin playing smiley for the sole purpose of being a cock isn't really adding anything useful to the thread unless you were just trying to show what a dick you can be.

I don't understand why people always complain about how much athletes make. Who else in this world can do what Tim Duncan does? Who else can do what Peyton Manning does? Alex Rodriguez? Tiger Woods?

No one. And that's why they make the big money.

Doctors, lawyers, teachers and social workers may be more important to society. But they are emminently replaceable. Each year, schools are pumping out these people into our work place, and the service the provide is much more important than an athlete. But no one of them is nearly as unique or entertaining as Tim Duncan. And that's why he's worth the money.

On the flipside, why aren't more people bitching about how much money the owners make? What did Steinbrenner's kids do in their lives to earn more money than A-Rod or Timmy D? Nothing. What talents do they have that are special, unique and entertaining? None. So bitch about them.

Tim Duncan is a class act. He is owed $51 million. He's earned it. He knows it. The Spurs know it. But he takes less because it's worth $11 million to keep contending for titles. Anytime someone rails against the NBA, point simply the the best player of the last decade, and tell them to shove it.

Welcome to the site Ash, and before I forget, Gotta add that I liked your post and your attitude. Maybe it's being from C'Town that makes the Pro $$$ whores piss me off so much (watching guys like Belle, Ramirez, Thome leave for the highest bidder). The problem is actually with us fans. WE pay the salaries. We go to the games and buy the merchandise of the network sponsors. There will come a day, probably many years from now (and I'm talking hundreds of years) where Professional Sports no longer exist, but then will be brought back slowly, and sanely.

I'm in comlete agreement with those that say that the players "deserve" the $$ based on the revenues. So I guess sanity needs to take over and drop these revenues, and that can only happen when fans stop buying tickets to the games. I'm trying to do my part, will go on freebies but have not purchased a ticket to a Professional Sporting event since the Tribe was in Municipal Stadium.

Peace.

Clearly, if anyone here has a problem, it would be you. I dont think anyone here was worshipping Tim Duncan. But the original poster, and those who agreed with him, were pointing out that for all the examples of A-Rod opting out of his $25M a year deal to get $30M, there are sports stars who are willing to sacrifice some money for their teams. Is ANYONE here saying that $20M is not a lot of money? I hope not. But they are saying that, instead of doing what 90% of sports stars do and just opting for the big payday, Duncan was willing to lose about $11M (or an additional 25% raise) in order for the team to continue to improve. And that should be worthy of some recognition, at the very least.

I don't really think methomps was trying to be a dick or a cock, though I question your fascination with the male genitalia. I think he was simply pointing out that its a little hypocritical for people whose average salary is $50,000 a year to be complaining about how easy others have it, when a large percentage of the world has to work much harder than any of us ever will for $600 a year. Be thankful for what you have, and if you don't like how much money professional athletes make, dont support them. But until then, just enjoy the entertainment.
