Tiger Woods (Offical Thread)

Tiger's "greatness" can be attributed in large part to his "working the galleries". Go back and watch his behavior and you will see how he used good and bad shots to get the gallery involved in the game and to impact negatively on his opponents ability to concentrate.

It always struck me as odd that a man, who threw tantrums just because someone clicked a picture or moved slightly in his field of view, would be so disrespectful of those that he played by whipping crowds into a frenzy so that they talked, moved, and otherwise disrupted his opponents.

Make no mistake, players loved Jack Nicklaus even though they were in awe of him. Players despise Tiger Woods.

His "greatness" has become quite pedestrian since the PGA and his fellow professionals told him that they would no longer tolerate his on-course behavior. It's not his swing. It's not his coach. It's being treated like everyone else for the first time in his life.

I'd be interested in seeing how he whipped crowds into a frenzy to distract opponents. It's not like he was doing the "raise the roof" gesture (okay, that one time he holed out on 16 at TPC Scottsdale). He is a transcendent figure in the world and in golf, nobody has ever attracted galleries like he did, there's bound to be some douchers in there. He was great, how can you possibly attribute it to his "working the galleries"? Augusta 1997, Pebble Beach 2000. The dude was a FREAK with a golf club in his hand for a stretch of time.

I think any pro with any degree of honesty will agree, Tiger improved the game ($$$) a lot.

I don't see how anyone could say otherwise as far as growing $ is concerned, just look at the prize purse growth. But there is more to "improving" golf than that as well.

In case you missed it, I had my tongue firmly in cheek when I used the word improved.

No I got it, but I do think that a lot of people look at "exposure" or financial growth as being Tiger's biggest contributions to golf. While I think that's true, and I would find it hard to see how one could argue against that, I feel it is only one facet to what Tiger Woods has been.

I attribute all of the idiots who yell "get in the hole" to Tiger Woods. The PGA tour should place sharp shooters in trees and pick off people who shout "get in the hole." Seriously...597 yard par five -- Tiger, and now, any golfer for that matter, hits a TEE shot -- there is going to be at least one dumb ass who yells "get in the hole." Maybe it was entertaining at one time, but it is downright unbearably annoying now.

Tiger hires away Dustin Johnson's caddie....and Butch Harmon had something to say about the hire (last paragraph in the post)

http://www.golfchannel.com/news/doug-ferguson/sources-woods-to-hire-djs-caddie-lacava/

? Tiger Woods has hired Joe LaCava to be his third full-time caddie.
LaCava decided to leave Dustin Johnson, one of the most talented young Americans, to go to work for the former world No. 1 who hasn?t won in the last two years.
According to a story posted on Woods? website Sunday night, LaCava approached Woods and his agent, Mark Steinberg, about the job.
?This was an important decision, and I wanted to think about it carefully,? Woods said in the story. ?Also, out of deference for the FedEx Cup Playoffs, I decided to wait until they were concluding to have substantive talks. We then spoke to Joe and came to an agreement.
?Joe is an outstanding caddie, and I have known him for many years. I?ve personally seen the great job he did for Freddie (Couples). I?m anxious for us to be working together.?
David Winkle, Johnson?s agent at Hambric Sports Management, confirmed LaCava was going to work for Woods and a search for a new caddie would begin immediately.
?Needless to say, Dustin and I were completely surprised, as they have enjoyed a great relationship and have been very successful together,? Winkle said. ?Nonetheless, we think highly of Joe, both as a caddie and a person, which is why he was hired in the first place. We wish him nothing but the best with his new employer.?
LaCava was the longtime caddie for Fred Couples, a relationship that ended in the summer because Johnson was looking for a caddie and Couples? playing schedule was being reduced because of his health.
Swing coach Butch Harmon recommended LaCava to Johnson, and said Sunday night he was ?shocked? by the change.
?The thing that bothered me the most was T.W. not calling Dustin and asking if he could talk to Joe,? said Harmon, who used to work with Woods. ?That?s the way it?s done. I?m a little disappointed with the way Tiger handled it. But I?m not surprised.?

I still support Tiger and his quest for Jack's record.

I never did. I figure he doesn't need my support given the millions of jock sniffing wannabes cluttering public golf courses in his honor, and besides, Jack's a Buckeye.
