Tiger Woods (Offical Thread)

Ehhh...this just isn't true. The tour survived, yes. Just like baseball is surviving...

But the tour and tournaments can't give out $1.2 winners purses long-term without Tiger. And the tour can't keep charging outrageous sponsorship fees without Tiger.

They need him.

Ehhh...yeah it is. Just like the NBA survived when Magic and Bird left, because Jordan came along. And when Jordan left, there was Kobe and Shaq and LeTwatwaffle and the rest. When Tiger leaves, the people who watched gold just because Tiger is playing will leave. And some people might watch less. But to get to profs point about how much he plays, you are presuming the purses are all because of him. How to explain that when he plays a dozen or less PGA Tour events in a year? The rest of the torunaments have done without him for 10-15 years, and they still give out big purses. The Byron Nelson has never needed him. Presumably it never will.

And the point nobody mentions when defending Kitty is that much unlike Kitty's heyday, the field is much more competitive with stars that have game and youth on their side...Tiger isn't just going to turn 25 again and have guys like McIlroy wet themselves.

Absolutely. Tiger is not the only guy playing golf out there. And while he isn't getting any younger, the rest of the field sure as heck is.

For me, it's not cheering on the person so much as the game. I mean, in 2000 the dude had probably the best mechanical golf swing ever. His shots were amazing and what he did, winning what he did is something we may not see ever again. That's why I root for his game, not him as a person.

That being said, I love watching Tiger implode. Golf is much, much bigger than him and I enjoy watching him dominate as much as I enjoy watching him kick his wayward 9-iron. No one with any respect for the game should act like that, yet he does. I don't respect his actions or really him as a dude, I just laugh at it. He makes an ass of himself in front of an entire nation and I find that entertaining.

I do root for Phil. I can relate to his wife and mother having breast cancer, as my mother is a breast cancer survivor. I'm left-handed and play that way as well. I respect Phil's game and him as a person. Honestly, I don't know what Phil is really like, he may not give any shits about his fans or whatever, but he's not a complete tool about it. Converesly, Tiger was always an ass to the general public, though he's begun to show some attrition and open up as a person. Either way, I'd love to see Phil win another green jacket and Tiger shoot either way under or, more likely at this point, another 3-over. But I'd also rather see Tiger slaying hoes and crushing his drives. I like watching all golfers perform well - Watson, Mahan, McIlroy, Mickelson, Scott, Singh, Schwartzel -All of 'em. I like golf because I can root for good golf shots, root for the game. People may not understand that because they have emotions about certain players, I tend to eliminate that and just watch the tournaments. I've hardly missed one this year, with and without Tiger.

Some dads were never there in the first place. Tiger was VERY fortunate in this regard.

I mentioned Earl, because really he was Tiger's swing coach from the age of about 2 years old, until his death. I would vee bet any amount that, anything Butch Harmon wanted to change, Earl had to approve.
