Another suggestion for the beginning golfer - use the Stableford scoring system.
You get one point for a bogey, two for a par, three for a birdie, etc. The more points the better.
Part of the frustration for the beginner is that you can play a couple of good holes, drop a number of 7s and 8s and you sill end up well over three digits. Your game is improving, but you aren't seeing it.
With Stableford you are rewarded for good holes buy not punished for the cluster-f*** holes. Keep regular score as well, but give yourself something you can - and should - feel good about. Big difference mentally.
And don't shave strokes on your card. That does nothing but hide improvements in your game.
