Thread of What You've Eaten, Cooked and/or Drunk Lately

Not a great pic, but I needed to get rid of a bag of chicken thighs in the freezer. Seasoned with salt, pepper and sweet and hot Spanish paprikea and then braised with shallots, garlic and roasted rep peppers in dry vermouth, chicken stock and heavy cream.

This kind of stuff is so underrated.

Enjoyed it more than the steak the night before, and I got two great meals (there were five thighs) for probably ten dollars all in.

Right, when I was a lad and just bought a house I couldn't afford, we had this weird kind of "cuisines of the world" cookbook, and we would plow through it for stuff that would be inexpensive but largely fresh ingredients. Stuff like this with just a little tweak works well with wild game and even some cuts of beef if you didn't want to do whole roasts etc.

I need to go dig that book out, I used to do some fake cassoulet type bean dishes that I haven't done if forever and we used to find all kinds of good ideas in the Asia section, and it wasn't authentic asian at all this thing was like "how the French think other cuisines of the world should be executed"

I have a Pillsbury cookbook that is essentially a 300 page encyclopedia of appetizers and deserts from scratch. It’s been my go to for disposing of fruits and vegetables for nearly 30 years. Best ROI in my cookbook collection.

This reminds me, one of my cousins ended up with my grandmothers handnoted copy of Joy of cooking instead of me. I have been plotting her assassination ever since.

My sisters and I nearly came to blows over moms box of recipe cards she'd assembled by hand over the course of 60 years when she passed away.

The solution to that is making a recipe book kinda roladex for each of you, then add your stuff to that, and give it to your kids, etc.

Oh no, you misunderstand. I offered to digitize and collate the collection into a cookbook, and further offered to pay out of pocket myself to print physical bound copies of moms recipes… nobody was having it. We all just wanted moms hand written recipe cards in her “country kitchen” Longaberger basket of index cards.

Assassinate them.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say you were dealing with a bunch of women.
