The Joys Of Growing A Beard

By Dan Arnott
3A Environmental

Every one of us probably has some sort of list, be it physical or mental, of things we need to do before we die. If you?re a guy, that list should definitely include growing a beard. Why, you may ask? Well, there are dozens of reasons. The best reason, as given by John Belushi in Animal House, is ?why not??

For starters, being clean-shaven is high-maintenance. It requires the application of shaving cream and razors to your face on a regular, sometimes daily basis. This takes up precious minutes that could be spent studying or drinking. And the more we shave, the more blades the shaving industry will start adding to razors, and we all know that?s gone too far already. Beards, however, are as low- or as high-maintenance as you want them to be. In my opinion, a beard should be left in its natural habitat and not disturbed, but if you do feel like grooming it, you still run less of a risk of cutting up your face than you do if you insist on shaving.

A beard can also help you on co-op. If you start your work term as a fresh-faced student, eager to learn and work, everyone will heap tasks on you until you?re buried under a pile of work. If you grow a beard, people will usually assume you?re a project manager and leave you alone. If people do give you work, you can pawn it off on somebody else and they?ll just go along with it because hey, you?ve got a beard.
