Thinking of switchin to WOW from Time Warner

I use WOW for cable, internet and phone in a bundle. Great deal (about $105/mo with unlimited LD and digital cable - Starz, Encore, most sports channels but not ESPNU or NFL channel), great service. BTW, I have the highest-speed net access available from WOW in the Central Ohio area. Typically I get about 4.8 Mbps download and 1.8 Mbps upload speeds.

That sounds like EXACTLY what I'm looking for. 2 boxes, at least one of which supports HD. Although, I'd take ESPNU and NFL over Starz, Encore (I know ESPNU isn't an option, though) Do you know if they (WOW) plan on having access to the Big Ten Channel?

Hey BKB got your pm, sorry I didn't have a chance to chime in before, but what everyone so far is telling to about WOW is true. You get a lot more options for a little to about the same amount of money. I have had no real problems since I got WOW, the only thing that kind of irked me was that they do have nfl network but they do not show the games which was the main reason that I wanted nfl network, but it does have the different coast fox channels that time warner charges for. So I have gotten to see a good amount of wxtra football and college basketball that I might not have seen if I still had TW. Also DVR is cheaper if you need or want that, WOW only charges 1.25 for it. ESPNU they told me from day one they did not have and didn't think they would be able to get it soon, since TW while have not done it officially basicly prominsed dish network exclusive rights for a year. When I get home from work I will tell you all about the reason that made me switch to begin with.....but to answer the question again....no problems and great customer service so far. One guy I work with did tell me one thing with wow....if they get a ladder out for any reason they are going to charge you extra.

you could get a dish and keep road runner, you don't have to get DSL

I suppose that's true.

FWIW, I've been really happy with RoadRunner. My experience may not translate to other areas, but over the last five years as a customer I've found their service very reliable in general and reasonably priced. The service has some nice perks... like if a newer/better model of modem becomes available, they'll swap it out for you free of charge.

The one time I did encounter recurrent problems (one or two hour a day connection issues, which ended up being local line complications out here in the sticks), I got a call from one of the senior supervisors, who'd reviewed my difficulties and gave me two full months of credit (internet and cable) just for experiencing intermittent issues.

That's why I left AT&T/SBC Global/Ameritech/WeHateOurCustomers.

I had an 9 year old modem that went bad, and they told me I had to pay $300 for a new one. I asked them, "Let me get this straight, if I were a new customer you'd give it to me, but since I've been a loyal customer for 9+ years I have to pay $300 for one?" The resounding "Yes" I received forced my switch to RoadRunner through Insight. So far so good!

I have DSL, bought another modem, because yes SBC/ATT won't replace it, but it was less than $30 with some discount at Best Buy I was able to get.

As far as the cable, I am about 95% sure I am switching to WOW as well. I was waiting until after the 1st of the year because they are supposed to have the "on demand" programs and I don't see the Sinclair/TW resolving itself anytime soon.

I too have a HD capable TV without the built in tuner. I am going to upgrade to a smaller model at some point and the over the air antenna would work fine then, but until that day comes, I rely on the cable company.

I see TW's point about Sinclair, but they are screwing themselves. ESPNU, and I would almost bet they will have no Big Ten channel because they certainly aren't the fastest at getting channels for their customers.

FWIW, I ended up making the switch. As I told the guy on the phone, I'm generally happy with TW, don't like the lack of a deal with Sinclair, but that I wasn't particularly excited to leave them to something new, considering the last time I did that, I was highly unhappy (switched to Americtech some time in 1997 - 1998).

He gave me a pretty damn good deal, I think. HD channels I wanted included on the Digital Basic plan, 5Mbps Cable modem, cable phone, DVR all for the low low price (including equipment leases) 112.00 assured for 18 months. Don't really need or want DVR, but I've been told that once you get it, you love it, so... we'll see.

Read the bit about TW maybe losing Fox/ABC for 160,000 customers (or was it 16,000?) and thought to myself, whew. Not only do I get the BCS Championship in HD, I actually GET the friggin game.

BKB,

pm buckeyefool. He just switched from Time Warner to WOW and is thoroughly impressed.

Said customer service is 100% better.

Said when he moved that Time Warner gave him an 8 hour window of when they would show up in about 20 days and he called WOW and they gave him a 2 hour window like the next day or the day after.

I had Time Warner since they started up as Qube many years ago; about three years ago I switched to WOW. WOW does seem to have much better overall service and customer support, etc.

In my opinion both of them are over priced!!!

Bkb,

  • Couple of ?'s.
  • Is the 112.00 inclusive of tax?
  • Is the DVR an HD DVR?
  • Are you satisfied with the phone service so far?
  • Did you upgrade the phone service to include voice mail?
  • Does the HD tuner have and HDMI output or a DVI output?
  • Are there any HDMI inputs on the HD box
  • Are you getting tired of my questions?
Thanks!
