The people ORD is crusading against simply didn't exist before web forums allowed every idiot to spill his innermost thoughts out in public, or at least I never met anyone like that in five years at OU. Saturdays in the dorms meant watching OSU, and Sundays meant watching the Browns. Walking across campus, you could tell if the Buckeyes or Browns had scored due to the cheers from the dorms. OU games were just a place to get drunk and watch the band, and probably still are.

The one thing I will say in defense of MAC football teams is that since Ohio has so many of them, we all get to enjoy the hilarity when a Toledo beats scUM or an OU beats the Fighting Wanstaches. Admit it, ORD -- even you enjoyed those games.

Not really. I can't stand to see any Big Ten school lose to a non-AQ conference...even Michigan. Watching OU beat the overrated Big East, however, did bring a smile to my face.

Regarding your first paragraph, I'd say that's the very phenomenon that drives the MAC's lunatic fringe over the edge. If the majority of their fellow students and alums didn't care about their state's flagships, then the hard core MAC fans wouldn't be able to work themselves up into the same frenzy of impotent loathing.

Actually, I see a great deal of difference between myself and them. Impotent loathing would be over something as trivial as Kent State students wearing an Ohio State sweatshirt on campus or watching a Buckeye game on television. It's also impotent because it's never going to change. Personally, I could care less if some Ohio State student chooses to walk across campus wearing a sweatshirt from one of The Other State Universities.

I would differentiate the above from loathing the administrations at these schools (as opposed to their students or sports teams' fans) for their long track record of attempting to damage and limit my alma mater. Also, given the fundamental structural changes in Ohio's higher education system since 1982, I would say that loathing on the part of myself and others (including every Ohio State administration since Rhodes became Governor in 1962) as having been far from impotent.

Besides, all serious talk of higher education politics aside, it IS amusing to read some of the anguished hatred on these boards over a meaningless article by a Fredo student who says she roots for the Buckeyes. When I post a rant about the very notion that an Ohio State fan could possibly wear a Kent State t-shirt, then--and only then--would I be similar to these tools.

couldn't agree more

I graduated from UT 3 times and was in school there for 8 years. I was born a Buckeye, both my parents are alums, some of my greatest memories involve game day in C-bus arriving hours before the game and not leaving campus until well into the night after me and my dad had caught whatever else was going on on campus, from a hockey game to a volleyball scrimmage to a trip to longs to pizza at Tommy's to a stroll through the Wexner center. Saturdays are for Buckeye games, period.

While at UT, not only would tOSU preempt any Rocket game, but I actually left the Glass Bowl to wobble back over to the house to watch the Bucks on more than one occasion. For the most part we were all tOSU or scUM fans and we spent a large amount of time making fun of the "hardcore" rocket fans.

My wife has a friend who will tell you to this day that is favorite college football team is UT, the first time he said it I asked him, "what is your real favorite team" and he replied "the rockets". Now when he starts up that crap I just laugh at him.

Most of the hardcore "UT" guys were just oddballs who wanted attention and wore Blue and Gold shoes. I know almost all of the guys who started "Blue Crew" and many of the guys who have been in it subsequently. With very few exceptions, tools.

Don't get me wrong, I got to see some fantastic games in the Glass Bowl, love it when UT does well, was overjoyed when we smacked down scUM, but if the Rockets have a bad year it does not really effect me. If the buckeyes have a bad series I am consumed by it. I only see a few rocket games a year and I could care less. My attendance at any weekend gathering in the fall is wholly contingent upon my ability to watch the Bucks.

I went to the game in Cleveland, wore buckeye gear, made fun of everyone I was with who was sporting the midnight blue and gold, and that included my wife.

It is just how it is in Ohio and I love it.

:oh:

So much angst over something they can't control.

Explain this Miami fans

And the article that started it all.

The mentality displayed in that thread is very real among non-tOSU Ohio schools. They don't like when I-as an alum- say "Yes, the most lab shackled Chinese grad student or football hating art major who GRADUATED from tOSU is more of a Buckeye than the biggest Pryor jersey wearing, Lane Ave drinking, buckeye necklace wearing non-alum". Arrogant-perhaps-but when the Buckeyes take the field, I see fellow alums to be, not just my sports entertainment.

stx, I learned to be a Buckeye from a man who never attended the University until he was in his 70s. His father was a poor farmer living outside Logan. I worked my way through university in menial jobs side-by-side with some of the greatest Buckeye fans you could ever meet. None of the people who encouraged me to attend Ohio State from the time I was in primary school had ever attended the University. And they all loved it as much as anyone here.

Please, let's not ever make distinctions between alumni and fans. Ohio State is bigger than that. It is Ohio's premier university. It belongs to the people.

I would say that the kid in the library (I will not use cultural stereotypes:wink2: ) during an Ohio State game is not more of a buckeye than say Paul Keels who is a Xavier alum.

This thread just boggles my mind.
Maybe it's because we don't really have anything like this in Georgia as both Tech and UGA are on fairly equal footing in terms of funding from the state and relative competence in Athletics.

To make a bit of a far fetched analogy, it seems as if Ohio State is sitting at the head of the table at Thanksgiving Dinner. A massive spread of anything the heart desires is laid out in front of you. Everything and anything imaginable.

And yet...

You're fussing about the little kids sitting at the table with broken chairs in the corner who are sharing a bowl of Captain Crunch?

Why do you give a shit?

Good point but I think its worth discussing because most of us that grew up in Ohio and graduated from tOSU work with, are related to someone who goes to UT, OU, Miami of Ohio etc. So it comes up in discussion quite a bit, for example there is a guy sitting right by me with his BGSU shirt right next to a guy with a Bearcat helmet on his desk and they always steer sports conversation toward tOSU jealousy. I dont give a shit but ill talk about it.

ORD, while I normally follow this logic and root for the Big 10 teams.. there was something very special in watching scUM get knocked off on the season opener to a D1AA team.

God, it still makes me smile. What a bunch of douches.
