Maybe it's because we don't really have anything like this in Georgia as both Tech and UGA are on fairly equal footing in terms of funding from the state and relative competence in Athletics.

To make a bit of a far fetched analogy, it seems as if Ohio State is sitting at the head of the table at Thanksgiving Dinner. A massive spread of anything the heart desires is laid out in front of you. Everything and anything imaginable.

And yet...

You're fussing about the little kids sitting at the table with broken chairs in the corner who are sharing a bowl of Captain Crunch?

Why do you give a [censored]?

To actually answer the question, because the little brothers have tried to use the hammer of government to steal the food from our table and have it given to them, when they have earned exactly squat.

But this all happened some time ago. Since then, some of them have actually been smart enough to realize that when the Buckeyes are good, football itself is a hotter commodity in the state and their product (such as it is) benefits by comparison. In other words, they get more by living on the Buckeyes' crumbs than by trying to steal from their plate (football-wise anyway).

As for the academic side; tOSU is a better school than most of the rest, but their alumni condescend from a position of utter inferiority. A great example of this occurred when the Buckeyes played one of the little brothers a few years ago.

For the preview, I took a sarcastic jab at this habit of condescending-from-inferiority. I mentioned that they "deign to play the Buckeyes". On one of their message boards, someone posted that they'd like to "gleefully point out the misuse of the word 'deign'".

Clearly they missed the sarcastic jab at their expense. And from a position of being too stupid to understand what was meant, they made fun of their superiors.

Fuck Fredo

A better analogy would be that the little kids were sitting at a perfectly good table and given plenty of food for their little stomachs to handle, but they still called a state social worker crying about poor treatment, with the state government subsequently demanding that they be allowed to sit at the big table and get as much food on their plate as the adults and a full glass of wine.

Fair enough sir! Without know the financials - I thought my analogy might be a stretch. Thanks for the clarification.

Woah woah woah hold the phone

Are you meaning to tell me that MAC schools have fans? A message board? Seriously?

Well I guess hating on tOSU would pretty much be all they have to talk about right? I mean I don't even have to look to picture the other topics on that forum..

"Hey guys can't wait for the coming season, this is finally the year we'll be something slightly above [censored]ty"

"Couldn't be more excited about our first 3 weeks of collecting paychecks at (insert BCS school here)"

"Just bought my tickets to the Little Caesars Pizza bowl, what's Detroit like this time of year?"

Well, to be honest Ohio State used the hammer of the government first to put them in the position to be the state University.

For Woof, Ohio University & Miami are the oldest Universities in Ohio (OU was established in 1804) and back in the very early 1900s (1904?) Ohio State was named the #1 University in Ohio by giving them a monopoly of giving out PhDs. That kinda pissed off the 2 oldest Universities in the state.

Now, while I grew up an Ohio State fan and just so happened to attend Ohio University. I really don't care. It never affected me, so I don't care. That's about 90% of the students of these colleges. The other 10% are the pain in the asses that this thread is about.

This 10% are the people that weren't sport fans growing up (ie didn't root for a college team before) and/or were from other parts of the country or states. (ALOT of Ohio U. alums are from the Kentucky/Tennessee area)

These are the type of guys in college that just love bitching about something and anything. Wait... Ohio St keeps Ohio U. down??? BURN THEM! They are freaking annoying and give us all a bad name.

Lol in the last 4 years of going to every game it seemed like they found an excuse not to let any of the opposing bands march at halftime. I can't specifically remember one actually doing so although Michigan's might of. Just remember they always seemed to have a new reason for pushing them back to perform after the game.

I think your original point was made well enough. We could choose to be classy and rise above it, but some don't.

To whom much is given, much is expected. tOSU is given a great deal, and much is expected from it. We'd do well to simma down a bit and stop jabbing at the other institutions even if they jab at tOSU.

John...

Wow...Apparently I should have worded this differently??? Obviously visiting bands don't play Homecoming anywhere and I thought I made it clear I was referencing the "coincidence" that both times we've played them; Alumni Band Day was conveniently scheduled on that date. I?m talking about non special event games?

I'm honestly a bit surprised at the kickback here but to each his / their own.

Like I said I'll be happy to chalk it up to pure coincidence when I see the 110's feet on the field during half time on Sept 18th. If not though, I?ll just have to assume that Ohio A&M?s Administration is a better judge of talent than the Macy?s Parade Selection Committee and I?ll have to make due watching TSBDBITL execute Michigan?s Script Ohio (sans State) for the umpteenth time.

Really? Ohio A&M? Wow. He must have been born and bred in a UM household to bring up something that happened over a century ago. I guess one way to lash back at him would be to call his alma mater American Western University.

This is a perfect example to the inferiority complex some of the MAC fans have in Ohio. Most people I know that have gone to the MAC schools actually root for other power programs (UM, PSU, ND, etc) and only follow their alma mater in the box scores.

Oh, and in case you can't figure it out, the S stands for Second (I knew a girl who played in the 110 way back in the day, and they hated TBDBITL with a passion for what ever reason.)

Ohio A&M is only derogatory to small-minded people. It's a tribute to the university's growth in size and stature and its heritage as Ohio's land grant institution.

They wanna make farm school jokes, but Athens : Ohio :: State College : Pennsylvania. I mean that in the most Pryor-esque way possible.

Do graduates of state schools in Ohio have a general leg up in getting into OSU for grad school? That is to say - if I have a decent GPA in undergrad and went to Toledo, but want to get a masters in engineering (or whatever) from OSU, do I have a leg up in admissions because of my in-state diploma?

Why do you give a shit?

In 1904 Ohio State was made the flagship college -- probably when the The Ohio State University got it's start. Restrictions were placed on duplicating programs thus eliminating many of the Masters and Doctoral programs at the smaller schools. The presidents of these schools didn't like the slight.

Somewhere along the way we had a convergence between an ambitious Governor and a president of Miami, one Thomas Schriver. Gov. Jim Rhodes had floated the novel idea of something for nothing in his campaign -- every kid who graduated from an accredited Ohio high school was guaranteed admission to Ohio State and there would be a dorm room waiting for him and if he didn't want to go to OSU Rhodes would make sure he had a dorm room in any other state college. All of this building was to be paid for without raising taxes.

Cranes appeared all over Ohio and dorms were built and then the presidents of OU and Miami discovered that due to the fact that though all roads in Ohio eventually led to Columbus, very few led to Athens and Oxford. Their enrollment numbers weren't going to fill the dorm space they had just created.

Schriver came up with the notion that Harvard-on-the-Hocking and Oxford-on-the-Miami should be allowed to become the state schools with selective enrollment and the rest would be wide open. Rhodes bought the plan.

Thus, from the late 1950s through the 1980s, Ohio State was where you sent your son or daughter for two quarters if they couldn't get in anywhere else.

I should add that like most of what Rhodes "did for Ohio," the plan was of limited vision. Ohio State's capacity to house and feed shot from 20K to 45K, but there was no money in the tax free scheme to pay for more professors, build more class rooms (kind of like the cancer research center he wanted to build near Athens -- the buildings were budgeted but not the doctors, researchers, lab equipment, etc.) and his school plan certainly contained no money to create the kind of programs that might have kept "at risk" students in school for more than one hell raising freshman year. So you had a campus of 45K and an academic plant designed to serve 20K.

Something on the order of academic sausage ensued.

It took two far sighted presidents -- E. Gordon Gee especially -- to re-transition Ohio State into the lead school in the state system, end grad program duplication, and restore many of the top academic/research programs to Columbus and the academic folks in Athens and Oxford have not taken kindly to it.

Therein lies the history of anger between the schools.
