Thee Ohio State University News

I'm not saying our ag program is bad or even mediocre. I am saying that times have changed, and it's no longer a core component of the university like it probably was in 1948 any more than ag is still a central part of Wisconsin, Illinois or Minnesota. Yes, it's always going to be part of the university and should be expected to be as excellent as possible. It shouldn't, however, suck up resources at a level that's not proportionate to its enrollment and overall importance.

Hell, if you really dig into the history of the university, the one constant from even before its founding was to keep ag in check and keep it from running the university. And that would have been at a time when exponentially more students were coming off of farms and often going back to them after graduating. That's why the university was put in Columbus instead of Springfield and why the AIT at Wooster was founded a few years after that.
Also why the “Ohio A&M” moniker didn’t make it into the 20th century. Thank you Joseph Sullivant and friends.

Hmmm...not good.

Ohio State team doctor sexually abused 177 students over decades, report finds

According to the report, the school “had knowledge” of sexually abusive treatment from Strauss as early as 1979, “but reports about Strauss' conduct were not elevated beyond the Athletics Department or Student Health until 1996."

Strauss died in 2005.

More men seek to hold Ohio State Buckeyes accountable for handling of mistreatment by Richard Strauss

Dozens more men are suing Ohio State over the university's failure to stop sexual abuse and misconduct decades ago by team doctor Richard Strauss.

Just sayin': It's all about the money now.

It flies under the radar but Ohio State and Honda's partnership has built one of the most important automotive research centers in the world.

When Honda began the project to build a plant in Marysville in the 1970s, I handled the relocation of most of their senior executives from Japan and outside Ohio to Central Ohio. I asked the senior Japanese executive why they had picked Ohio and he told me a story that apparently was published later. Honda decided to try to penetrate the US motorcycle market after WWII. They encountered two insurmountable problems. Most importantly, their motorcycles did not match up well with the high-powered models produced by Harley-Davidson and other US cycle manufacturers. Another problem was the resentment of Japan for Pearl Harbor and the WWII, which was expressed also in rather blunt racism. Eventually, the small advance team was whittled down to two executives who slept in the Honda warehouse/office. To save money, the execs asked for small Honda motorcycles to drive. A Sears manager noticed these small motorcycles parked outside a California shopping mall and approached the team to allow Sears to sell for them. The small motorcycles were unique and a hit. A team was sent to visit major US cities to glean marketing data.

The executives encountered a lot of resistance and were chased out of quite a few places. They slept in the car many nights. Then, their car broke down just outside of Columbus. Seeing them on the side of the road, a Columbus couple took them into their home for a week while their car was repaired. Columbus apparently was the only place that they did not experience anti-Japanese sentiment. Years later, Honda reached out to central Ohio. City leaders apparently were not keen on a heavy industry factory but recommended nearby rural areas for development, which eventually landed in Marysville.

Thus, the kind acceptance of foreigners, who were from a country that had attacked the US while negotiating peace in Washington DC and committed such atrocities, was remembered and influenced the choice of central Ohio for Honda's operations.

I wonder if the "Columbus couple" was ever informed as to why the Honda plant was located in Central Ohio.
