Man pleads guilty to assaulting Ohio State football player

LARGO - A 28-year-old man pleaded guilty on Wednesday to punching Ohio State University football player Tyler Moeller in an unprovoked attack last July at Gator's Cafe and Saloon in Treasure Island.
Moeller had brain surgery after the punch, suffered stroke-like symptoms, and still is recuperating.

Ralph Gray Decker did not speak at a court hearing Wednesday, but afterward apologized to Moeller's mother, Amy, for the attack, and hugged her in a courthouse hallway. Tyler Moeller was not present ? his mother said he is preparing for final exams.

Decker will be sentenced in August, and his attorney, Sean McQuaid, said until then he will work to pay $11,000 restitution for Moeller's medical bills. He pleaded guilty on Wednesday without making a plea bargain, meaning the judge could sentence him to as much as five years in prison...

Meaning, he had no defense to offer, the DA was not bargaining, and he did not want the judge to hear the story from the kid who damn near died, and to see the weeping mom and sister on the stand.

Not too much of a sucker punch defense, and no plea deal, so his best option was the guilty plea and to hope for some kind of leniency for manning up and pleading.

Except I do not think it was anything more than his attorney getting him to take the least-worst option...which was pleading guilty instead of being found guilty.

Kenneth City man gets probation in attack of Ohio State football player

A 28-year-old Kenneth City man was sentenced to two years of probation for punching Ohio State University football player Tyler Moeller in an unprovoked attack at a beach bar last year.
If he completes probation, Ralph G. Decker will not have a record as a felon, part of a deal negotiated by Moeller's family and state prosecutors.

not knowing the circumstances, the kid involved, or the moeller family it is interesting. however, im a firm believer in second chances. and if we are honest from the looks of it the moellers gave this man a second chance. here is to hoping he can make the best of it and make a positive impact on society and the community at large.

agreed, this sounds more like the families wishes than the judicial system dropping the ball.
