The argument I see most in defense of the ESPN Invitational is "THEY HAVE TO DECIDE WHO THE BEST TEAMS ARE BASED ON THE EYE TEST" (This is mostly used when arguing for Alabama being in possibly for a 2nd straight year without even winning their division of the SEC).......because the human element never includes any biases
If they are gonna have a playoff i'd make it 6. Take all 5 P5 champs and the highest group of 5. That eliminates any possible biases. Win your conference and you're in, no bs inbetween.
