High School The Ohio-Michigan Border Classic

that is going to get real ugly for the high school boys from the state up north:lol:

At the risk of sounding outrageously arrogant, I have to agree. There is certainly some elite talent in that state (Webb, Harris, etc.), but it seems to me that calling this a David vs. Goliath battle would be an extreme understatement. The numbers and the coaching simply aren't comparable, even if many of the "elite" Ohio kids choose not to participate. I guess we'll find out.

The Ohio - Michigan Border Classic will begin in 2014. The HS FB all-star game will pit 40 Michigan seniors against 40 Ohio seniors.

The Ohio - Michigan Border Classic will be played at Donnell Stadium in Findlay, Ohio.

It definitely deserves it's own thread.

So far there doesn't seem to be much written about it but John McAllister discussed it a bit:

The Ohio-Michigan Border Classic High School Allstar Game
Today, the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association's regional directors will give final approval for the first ever Ohio-Michigan Border Classic Allstar football game to be played next year.

The game will be played on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Donnell Stadium in Findlay, Ohio. Each team will consist of forty players and six coaches. The selection process will be much the same as Ohio coaches used in selecting players for the former Big 33.

.../snip/...

There will be a press release in early July with more details about the Ohio Michigan Border Classic. I have been fortunate to be working on this game and am putting this blog entry out to make sure readers get the correct information.
..and a quick blurb in the Dispatch:
Top senior football players will be featured in the inaugural Ohio-Michigan Border Classic in Findlay on June 14, 2014, coaches associations from both states announced.

For Ohio, the game replaces the long-running Big 33 Classic rivalry against Pennsylvania in Hershey, Pa., which was terminated this year. Pennsylvania subsequently began a series against Maryland.

The Ohio and Michigan rosters will be selected in February.
Hopefully this series will eventually find a home in the Glass Bowl.

Would this even be a competition? Doesn't Ohio blow away Michigan in terms of HS football talent?

Yes per se but me being from Ohio and coaching here in Michigan, I will say that Michigan is definitely trending upwards as far as football. More schools and players are getting exposure more than before. Heck Cass Tech pretty much dominated Glenville in the 7 on 7 competition at Detroit SMSB (and I'm originally from the Glenville neighborhood)

I actually think Michigan is starting to change from a basketball-first state to damn near neck and neck, plus they know about the history so don't be surprised if it is more competitive than we think. JMO

Not really apples to apples as Detroit Cas Tech is the two time defending state champ up north & Glenville hasn't made the playoffs in a couple of years.

Elite talent, perhaps, but distributed widely across the state, minus Cass Tech & a few of the Catholic schools in the Detroit area. There's some teams outside of Detroit that attract the local talent as well (From Muskegon, Saginaw & Grand Rapids notably), but nothing like the Detroit area as that metropolitan area (While very large) accounts for over 1/3 of the entire states population.

Definitely trending upwards, but still very far behind in the game. Football is not a top priority for many athletes even though it's popularity is the highest. Very diverse state in terms of sports as young athletes play multiple sports, but usually specialize in only a few or just one. A lot of the best athletes don't end up playing football at all in HS, or at all.

Cass Tech is a unique situation. The city of Detroit itself has always produced great talent in the sport, but the athletes were dispersed amongst numerous schools for years & especially the suburban schools (Illegally) and the Catholic schools that could recruit them. Cass Tech has been able to keep them in the city & thus you have a D-1 powerhouse now. Pretty hard to compete against a school with a talent base as big as they have at there disposal.
