and any idea what your swing speed currently is with driver?

Your swing speed definitely is important when considering your shaft type. I hit a 9.5 degree loft, stiff shaft Taylor Made Driver and I am like you Sparco that I don't get the length that I feel I should. Even with the 9.5 degree I still have a relatively high ball flight. I know that I tend to clear my hips to quickly and my hands lag.

Sounds more like a swing issue than an equipment issue to me and it is really hard to say what the problem is without seeing your swing. Personally, when I am hitting the ball a little higher than usual, it is usually a matter of me not getting to my front side. I would be curious to know your AOA and launch angle. Unless you can generate significant clubhead speed, you should hit your driver on a slight upswing, i.e. a positive AOA. However, if your AOA is too positive, say 6 degrees instead of 3 degrees, it could cause you to hit the ball too high.

My advice is to take your club to a local shop that has a launch monitor and compare swings with your driver to swings with other drivers.

All great thoughts. Thanks all. Last time I was measured I was swinging around mid 90s. LAX season ends on Monday. My kids played their way into the championship so coaching them has been my focus since mid-March. Time to spend some time on me, with what remains before the fall season starts up again.

I guess misery loves some company as it's good to know that others still sky the ball with a 9.5. I have to believe that it's my AoA. As I mentioned I do have a fairly late release on that club. It will be interesting to figure this out. We have a new PGA shop by the office. I'll check on Thurs if they do any swing analysis.

I'll take a better look at the shaft and update this post with details when I get off my phone.

Honestly, I'd hate to give up the accuracy that I'm getting this year... But getting another 15 yards in the air with some roll would be really nice. But who wouldn't want that, eh?

Thanks again!

Swing Tempo, Speed and you release point need to go into picking the right shaft.

IMO this issue sounds like a partial swing issue too. You need to make sure you are keeping your right hand cocked through impact like Rory. I have always used a 9.5 degree driver, i have a 100 mph swing, but once I changed this I was told I would get better distance from a 10.5. I went form driving 255 to 280+ just by making the change with my wrist. I also never bought a new 10.5 driver.

tl:dr I think you can fix some of your issues with a new shaft, but it probably is your swing like Matt said. Try the equipment first (easy) then the swing.

Well, now that we are talking swing flaws...

I have noticed two swing flaws that lead to some rather inconsistent ball striking:

1) failure to maintain posture / early extension.
2) not getting my right should down and through.

I think the two are interrelated. Essentially, right before impact I lose my spine angle (back rounds) and my hips move toward the ball. Some call it humping the goat. This makes it difficult to swing my arms and club through because there is no room. If you look at my swing, my lower body rotates through, but my upper body stalls right before impact and my right arms takes over, sometimes resulting in flipping.

Anyone have any advice for working on this? A pre-round routine or pre-swing routine would be ideal. Thanks.

Matt we may have to start posting videos so we can review each others swings.

I played at a small private club last night here in Indy and I was the only one on the course. I spent a lot of time just working on my mechanics, going through my pre-shot routine, working on my wrist cock (thanks for the advice), and I really started hitting it well. I went par, birdie, par, par on the last four holes with birdie putts on each one.

I had the round of my life on Saturday. Ended up having my best 9 holes ever (back-9) and my best 18. Triple bogey on 18 gave me a 10 over 81. Kind of disappointed that I didn't break 80, but more addicted than ever. Coming into this year I had never shot better than a 95.

Played twice at the home track this weekend:

37-44 on Saturday.

43-36 on Sunday.

Would be nice to put two nines together. I played the first four holes in +6 on Sunday because of errant tee shots...played the rest of the round in +2. And wasn't making any putts.

I think I forgot to post it at the time, but I posted a personal best 39 three weeks ago while subbing in my father-in-law's league. My best 9-hole score before that was a 42.

I only two bad shots the entire round, and I followed up one of those with my best shot.

The first of those, I was hitting my PW from the fairway about 115 yards out, and pulled it to the left. There's about a 6-7 foot drop on that side of the green, and my ball settled in that hole below the green, about 15 yards from the pin. I followed that up with a high, gentle flop that I lost track of on the way down since I was standing below the green and could only see the top of the flag. The superintendent was standing nearby though and started yelling, "It's in, it's in!". I was happy with the shot when I hit it, but I only imagined I was leaving myself with a manageable putt. There's a lot of luck involved in a shot like that one, but I was proud of it because I've worked on that shot a lot.

I had the opportunity to play the Honors Course in Ooltewah, TN today. Great Pete Dye track. Had an incredible ball striking day and still only managed to put an 86 on the board. One of the most difficult courses I have ever played.

I have a Nike VR Pro Tour Str8 Fit driver, 9.5 that I adjust as far down as possible (7.5). I'll still occasionally sky one, but there are typically two reasons I do that:

1. I stand too far away from the ball, causing me to flatten my swing and get under the ball.
2. I put the ball too far forward in my stance and hit it on the upswing too much.

For me it was all about swing. You could have put a 6.5 driver in my hands and I would have skied it, as my swing was certainly the issue.
