BTNs talking heads - speaking of which, Nicole Auerbach has legs - make some interesting comments about Knowles’ defense - like why, when you have an edge in talent, do you play such a high risk defense. Takes me back to an early season interview of Knowles and his comments about not having worked with this much talent. As for Auerbach, lovely hooters too.
We switched to a low risk defense and they put together a long drive for a TD. His plan was obviously the best one for us in that game. The secondary just couldn't get it done. Slowly losing might have looked better but he did what he needed to do to try to win and the offense did not get the job done. If the offense executes properly, we get out to a hot start. They didn't. McCarthy wasn't out there throwing dimes. The secondary just didn't get it done. If they're covering their guys, McCarthy probably doesn't even throw those wide open underthrown TD passes. He probably eats a sack or runs for a minimal gain.
What are these people watching? It clearly worked until the secondary broke down. No defensive scheme in the world can account for massive breakdowns in coverage like that. It's not like the guy was wide open downfield because Knowles schemed bad. It failed because people weren't in the right position.
There was plenty of praise for Knowles early on for how difficult it was for Michigan to gain yards. Then suddenly there are massive coverage lapses in the same set and suddenly it's a bad Knowles plan?
The difference between the successes of the defense on Saturday and the failures weren't schematic. They were in execution.
