THE GAME: ttun @ tOSU, Sat Nov 26, 12pm, FOX

FILM STUDY FROM HELL

The good news is that is still totally fixable. It's just too late to fix it for last Saturday.

Ohio State actually won the analytics battle on Saturday, as Michigan gained three yards per play over 54 plays. Unfortunately the Wolverines ran 59 plays. Those other five: 360 yards, 35 points. The spreadsheet smooths out the data and doesn't account for the organism where the game was played.

I read that and couldn't believe that is true, basically it is.

C. Johnson pass 69 yards for TD
C. Johnson pass 75 yards for TD
C. Loveland pass 45 yards for TD
D. Edwards run 75 yards for TD
D. Edwards run 85 yards for TD
_______________________
total 349 yards

It might be 349 in lieu of 360, but still those 5 big plays was the game. The other 54 plays they only gained an average of 3.3 yards.
Edwards had 22 carries for 216 yards and an 9.8 average, you wipe off his 2 long TD runs and he had 20 carries for 56 yards and a 2.8 average.

The three long passes: This is mainly personnel - just don't have enough good 1:1 coverage people. We put everyone on an island - it's not unexpected that we would give up a big shot, but not three.

The two long runs: In both cases, it was three OL vs. 3 defenders (yes, all three defenders were demolished) with no second level. Seems like there was also a schematic issue.

That orbit motion mentioned in the 11 W site, I remember Bama hitting us with that wrinkle using Devonta Smith. Another way to get their best playmaker the ball.

The only difference was, they went from under center, incorporated a look that involved their Y as a lead and ran out the coverage from the playside off ball action. I can't remember if the Bucks were in man or our cover 3, but either way
it would have been a successful call against a cleared out corner and a held curl/flat defender. As Devonta walked in for a TD.

What we ran against scUM wouldn't work against a quarters boundary corner who isn't cleared out, and instead (without a fast threat in front of him) builds his 1/4 integrity with a more shallow depth given the reduced field and can sit at home with eyes peeking.

Long and short, it was a bad design run at questionable time against a defense able to beat it. Even in my drunken stupor at the time I thought it was poorly done, now I know it was.
