The Game, tOSU at ttun, Nov. 27th,12pm FOX (3654 down to 0)

Is it fair to ask if our season was sacrificed to develop Dawand Jones?

I like the kid but I think the whole line rotation was off a bit this year based in guys playing out of position.

Mumford was a better tackle than guard.

Paris Johnson was one of best 5, but started out of position….so we had (2) tackles playing guard.

Meanwhile, you kinda have a 1 trick pony playing RT.

I don’t know….the line just bothered me all year. I wouldn’t say it’s on Dawand as much as it is on coaching staff to sacrifice the best “unit” just so the guys with highest upside played.

I wonder where we are if line all year is:

NPF
Jones
Wypler
Johnson
Munford

or maybe flip Munford and Johnson.

Again, not trying to pick on Dawand, but I’d say that was the sore spot in terms of running ball. There’s a lack of explosiveness and extension on his side where the run game just gets limited. In fairness, he’s largely a huge wall that stands up well in pass protection. Today was a rough day, but it’s a pint I’ve made before about guys on line playing out of position.

To be up front, I’ve never been a fan of playing “the best 5 guys”. I’ve never agreed with that premise. Centers, guards, and tackles have different skill sets needed. I think we had too many guys out of position this year and our line was SIGNIFICANTLY overrated. As a unit they didn’t work that well in run game.

Will be something to watch in 2022, IMO.
Media and commentators kept saying how great our line was. They said great, not just good. Well, they really aren't great, need some work. IMO we really need some great edge rushers for this o-line to go up against in practice for the sake of improvement.

We don't have the Bosa brothers or a Chase Young at the moment.

The oline success, especially if you go back to the early days of voicing my concerns of Dawand at tackle, is/was based largely on a few things.

- CJ's being decisive about where the ball goes
- the running game and play action
- the screen game

Bama has gotten away with having LARGE OT's for a number of years now. But their offenses are mostly built on the inside zone, the RPO and play action. Alex Leatherwood kicked in to a guard spot for the Raiders and DJ Fluker is a mediocre starter. Cam Robinson is alright, but if it wasn't for how sounds he is as a striker to slow down the rush his pass pro would suffer from his lack of elite kick step.

Point being, if you're going to park these types of mammoth tackles on the edge, you have to be willing to make sure your offensive weaknesses are covered up by design - I.E. play calling and blocking assignments. Just taking straight drops and asking DJ to hold up against Hutchinson was.... not a smart idea. But then again, some of our calls looked off at the beginning. However I'm saying that with a hazy mind, I just woke up hungover as all hell. Might go back and give The Game a further watch just to understand what happened.

Hard to say what was more disappointing, the o line or the d line. As a d line if you're not getting pressure on the qb and also having the run shoved down your throat, don't know what to say at that point. And o line, if you have penalties, can't really run the ball and your qb is getting pressured, again don't know what to say.

That's their third win since 2001...that's a 3-17 record for them against us. Between their previous two wins in 2003 and 2011 we won seven straight, and we won eight straight from 2011 until the loss today. So, if you think that winning one game ever seven to eight years means the end of their "being our doormat", then I don't what to tell you...

Games from years ago mean very little. Not seeing the toughness on defense or in the trenches that we’re used to with the Buckeyes. Again, they will look different next year and maybe this was another perfect storm. We’ll see.

O-line was at least okay in pass protection against two first round DEs. You’re going to give up sacks in that case. D-line got dominated in every single facet.

I agree the besides the unforgivable false start penalties the O-line was ok. If you pass a lot and some of the routes take a while to form some sacks are just a part of the game. Now the D-line was completely destroyed and it was sad to say the least. Coaching staff could have helped them out by bringing in another D-linemen or the safeties down. But apparently that's against the rules. On paper that Dline should be Georgia nasty. But they look horribly soft and no developed. Something needs to change in that area. Not calling for anyone's job... but they need to change up something.

In retrospect, the “hang 100” comments were equally as dumb and unnecessary as Dabo ranking Ohio State 11th in the coach’s poll. There’s no reason to give a rival added ammunition. Maybe it would have been different last year, but the chances of scoring 100 is less than 0.001% and you’re basically guaranteeing a victory. Ryan Day should probably just stop and ask himself WWJTD (what would Jim Tressel do)? Give Them nothing to use at motivation and motivate your own team behind closed doors.

I mean those comments were made behind closed doors and it got leaked. Keep in mind they were made when Harbaugh was being a disrespectful prick himself. I have no problem with what Day said. It’s not like he shot his mouth off in public like the dumbasses at SCUM usually do.

Nothing is exact but this feels most like the 2003 Game to me.

A flawed OSU team with 1 loss found a way to be close to the NC Game/CFP but ran into a tsun team that was just determined to win and did it by physically whipping us.

I don't think you overreact but you damn sure better learn from how they were able to hurt you and make those adjustments.

Major changes needed on defense and that's been true well before this Game.
