Game Thread THE GAME: tOSU at TSUN, Nov 30 @ 12p ET, ABC

Fickell (and/or Withers) has to own some of the underwhelming defensive performance, but I believe what Bill Walsh said: "offense is more about scheme and defense is more about talent." Quite frankly this defense just doesn't have elite talent. It has potentially elite talent on the front 4 but they are still young and the back 7 has average at best talent. I'm not sure any coordinator could make a dominant unit out of this group.

I know what your saying, but I've seen other units, with what seems to be similar or lesser talent, perform far better on the field than the tOSU defenses of the past three years. It's impossible to know for sure because even if the whole defensive staff is replaced next year, and the defense is much better, you could always say that the players were now more experienced and therefore they are playing better. The only thing I know is that as long as this staff has been in place, the defensive performance has been inconsistent. There is no reason to believe that he defensive recruiting should be that far behind the offensive recruiting. If what I see on the field is was a lack of effort, I would agree that it was mostly on the players/head coach. But I see a lot of effort, but I don't see game plan, adjustments, and overall performance and that goes back to coaching. I believe that with these same players, a different set of defensive coaches would get a better overall performance out of them. Of course, I can't prove that at all. :)

I don't get all of you calling for Luke's head. UFM has himself talked about recruiting misses at LB over the past few years. I am sure it is not Luke's fault. Can't do anything about it, unfortunately, other than to evaluate better. We have Shazier, and that's it. IMO Zach Boren was a better MLB than Curtis Grant. Joshua Perry is decent, at best. Everyone is calling for better LB play, and I get it. But we need to have the athletes to compete at the position. The worst thing is Mike Mitchell and Trey Johnson aren't good enough to take over at the SAM and MIKE positions already. Scary times at LB U.
