Totally agree. I don’t think it has to be one or the other either as a great coach should do both. All I’m saying is that he consistently wins against anyone who’s not Michigan and while that game is important for sentimental reasons, it’s not the end all be all for our ultimate goals moving forward (that’s if you value National Championships).
There is only one great coach in college football and a few good ones. We have one of the good ones. Will he be great? Idk, but I’m just not willing to trade him in for an unknown commodity just yet. I agree he needs to start beating his top 5 opponents, chiefly Michigan, but if he only loses to top competition in close games, I’ll take it. I’ve seen Tressel and Urban beat Michigan so many times only to lose to a team with a losing record during the season or get blown out by a non-conference opponent in the bowl game. The feels just as bad to me.
I'm going to stop you right there. It isn't just "for sentimental reasons". Not now, not moving forward, not ever. It's also the same reason why I can't stand anyone who says bowl games, including the Rose Bowl when it's not for a playoff spot, are now somehow magically "meaningless".
tOSU is the umbrella that shelters all of Buckeye Nation. We are bound to it in so many ways. Tradition is what binds us to those who came before and those who will come after. How many times has The Game made or broke a season? Several in my lifetime alone. How many times has it been the Heisman for either team? Woodson, Troy... had the Bucks won last year, likely C.J.
I go back to this - if scUM is a good team, and the measure of being great is beating those other teams, then it's far more than just sentiment. It is THE season ending benchmark that you must clear. Because if you're consistently losing to TTUN, what makes anyone believe that these coaches and players will fare well against other quality competition? Those scUM coaches and players will expose flaws in us that will absolutely be exploited by teams in the playoff bracket.
So no, this is not for sentimental reasons and will never be for nostalgia. This is a brotherhood on the field, is it not? To regard The Game, or any game that carries 100+ years of historical significance, as no longer important is incredibly disrespectful to all the players and coaches who have poured time, blood, sweat and sometimes tears into this game. I won't stand for believing anything less, and I don't want to live in a world where we so lightly abandon those deep ties. The uniform you wear, the number on it, even the physical paths you walk on campus and in The Shoe', means you're walking in the same footsteps as those that proceeded you. All of whom fought and struggled to earn wins not for themselves, the record books don't show *name - number of victories*... it shows tOSU and the W/L column.
And finally, re: Tress bowl record. Let's see - Tress had one blowout in 06'. Close losses to better teams in 01, 07 and 08. Wins in 02, 03, 04, 05, 09, 10.
Urby Bowl record: Ineligible in 12' - wash. Close loss in 13'. Natty in 14, with wins in 15' 17' and 18'. Then getting smoked by Clemson in 2016.
It's not like the Vest or UFM were beating *ichigan and getting constantly housed in Bowl Season. In fact, their bowl records aren't all that dissimilar during their time here. Both one a 'Ship. Tress went back to a couple more, was one loss away from playing in 2 others and had a couple groaners in the regular season. Urban won a title, pissed down his leg for a repeat shot, and was always one loss away from sniffing another.
The likely hood that you get close to winning a natty, but not being able to get by your chief rival who may field similarly developed talent isn't all that great.
edit: One last final thought on that. If Bowl Games outside of the playoff are now 'meaningless', which means you'll have players opting out, won't be getting max effort from those left beyond a few, and I'm even going to raise concern about coaches sleep walking through bowl prep - then why in the hell should ANY fan show up? Since players can now profit, I'm not going to spare this next comment. Why should I show up, spend money on tickets, travel, hotels and food, when you're going to put an inferior product on the field? I'm a Browns fan, I stopped going to games after Johnny Manziel became a starter. Despite the fact that this isn't an NFL franchise, now that compensation is in order for coaches AND players, I feel the question has parallels and merit.
