ABC gets its wish: Game will start at 3:30

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Portable lighting and the desires of a television network have finally gotten to The Game.

The Big Ten announced yesterday that Michigan’s game at Ohio State on Nov. 18 will start at 3:30 p.m. on ABC, which will make the 103 rd renewal the latest kickoff in The Game’s history. But even if the sun will be setting by late in the second quarter, the later slot will mean more exposure, an OSU spokesman said.

"This is a normal time slot for ABC, they asked if we would consider it, and we like to be good partners with the Big Ten and the television network," associate athletics director for communications Steve Snapp said. "We talked it over with coach (Jim Tressel) and he’s fine with it.

"What it’s going to mean, among other things, is it’s going to get better exposure, especially on the West Coast, where a lot of the affiliates didn’t pick it up in the past because it essentially started in mid-morning when the kickoff was at noon or 1 p.m. here."

Ohio State has played many games with 3:30 p.m. starts in November the past two decades. Those and early season night games in Ohio Stadium are made possible by use of portable lighting.

"This will allow more people to see The Game, which we consider to be the premier rivalry in college football," Snapp said.

The Big Ten also announced the start time for OSU’s first two home games. The opener against Northern Illinois on Sept. 2 will be at 3:30 p.m. on ABC and the Sept. 16 game with Cincinnati will start at noon and be televised on ESPN Plus Regional.

The Buckeyes previously learned their first-ever game at Texas on Sept. 9 will start at 8 p.m. on ABC, the game at Iowa on Sept. 30 will start at 8 p.m. and the home game with Minnesota on Oct. 28 will start at 3:30 p.m.

The start times for the other six OSU games have yet to be determined.

I'm out here on the West Coast in Northern CA, and I couldn't believe that last year they initially decided to NOT show the OSU vs scUM game on ABC or ESPN. The greatest rivarly in sports and we were going to have to order it until ABC/ESPN got barraged with complaints and they finally decided to show it on one of the ESPN channels. Unbelieveable!!

I too am worried about it competing with a Pac 10 game and wonder how they are going to reconcile that with the Pac 10 fan base out here.

But, I do have to admit that I am excited to see, at least part of the game, under the lights, if that is indeed the case.

Going to 3:30 (Ohio time), makes it 12:30 PST, and Milli gets to see it at 9:30 Hawaiian time, rather than his usual 6:30 AM time.
Actually, Hawaii doesn't do the Daylight Savings Time crap, so we don't "fall back" for the fall/winter, thus the 3:30 pm EST kickoff will be at 10:30 am, and not 9:30, here. Besides, I'll be at The Game in person this year...

You got that right. I was going postal until I saw it show up on ESPN...that's why my clips of The Game are of the ESPN broadcast and not ABC's.

Lets move X-mas back to Dec 26th so we can get an extra day of shopping in while we're at it. We all enjoy christmas anyway so whats the big deal what day it actually falls on as long as we get shit to open?

Fuck ABC/ESPN and anyone who had a thing to do with this.

1. With playoff games for the ACC, SEC and Big 12 replacing and overshadowing their Big Rivalry match ups, this allows some other Big 10 Rivalry game a chance for exposure... but the only one I can think of that seems to hald anywhere near the tradition is Purdue - Indiana... so whose Notre Dame playing that weekend and when is their game being played?

2. I sure as hell hope this doesn't mean that the Big 10 is even remotely thinking of having a playoff.

So I take it that this means no more nationwide coverage for the game. if so, that sucks big time. :shake:
The only good thing is that the end of the game will be at night (well, not good for the cops). The best thing about 3:30 Big 10 games in late October/November (after daylight saving ends) is the transition from daylight to dusk to nighttime with the dropping temperature. Can't beat it.

Thank God they didn't do this last year. with a 3:30 start, I'd have been at my wedding reception at the time Gonzo was making his amazing catch.

Didn't you know that the Yankees/Red Sox was the the best rivarly in sports...I mean, they only play each other 200 times a year...Those are "BIG" games...unless, of course, you live 10 minutes west of I-95. Come on, we all watch at least one baseball game between April and September. Those games are soooooooooo important I pee my pants when they are on TV...It's America's pass-time after all...[sarcasm]

They could cancel Yankees/Red Sox and I wouldn't even notice for a year or two, except that EfuckinSPN wouldn't know what to whack off to...Fuckin east coast douchebags...That whole part of the country can lick my nut sack when it comes to sports...

OSU FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK

Michigan game time changed

Thursday, June 15, 2006 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Ohio State football fans hoping the Buckeyes can beat Michigan for the fifth time in six years will have to wait a little longer this season -- at least a few hours.
Michigan's visit to Ohio Stadium on Nov. 18 will be played at 3:30 p.m. on WEWS Ch. 5, a move away from the traditional early afternoon start. Ohio State home games were typically played at 1:30 in the days before television started shifting times, and the most recent kickoffs for The Big Game had been at 1 p.m.
OSU athletic department spokesman Steve Snapp said ABC made the request for the later start this year, which Athletic Director Gene Smith agreed to after clearing it with coach Jim Tressel.

"It's part of being a good partner in our television contract. It's not unusual for us to play in the late afternoon slot in November, so I don't think it's a hardship on anybody."
Notes:
Quarterback Troy Smith, receiver Ted Ginn Jr. and running back Antonio Pittman were among the 60 players named to the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award as the nation's best player. Defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock was one of 55 players named to the Nagurski watch list for the nation's best defensive player. Players are added to and subtracted from both lists during the season. . . . Donnie Evege, a 5-11, 185-pound defensive back and running back from Huber Heights Wayne, is the third player to pledge himself to OSU's 2007 recruiting class, joining St. Edward safety Nate Oliver and Piqua running back Brandon Saine. . . . Ohio State has hired Douglas Archie, who held a similar title at the University of Utah, as its associate athletic director for compliance and camps. Former compliance director Heather Lyke-Catalano had been reassigned in an athletic department reshuffling.
