'The Game' to be @ 3:30 EST!

well the west coast people I know often go out and party on friday nights. I'm sure plenty of west coast football fans tune in early... I'm talking about the fan who might watch the game if its on but won't plan his day around it.

Is there a lot of quality television on at 9 am on the west coast, unlike here in the midwest/east coast? Or are there not as many viewers at that time of day as 3:30? I'm not arguing that no one will watch it at 12, just that there will be more TVs on at 12:30 pm PT.

There's no party that I would sacrifice because there's a game the next day. On the other side of the coin, I'm not missing a Bucks game because I was partying the night before. I make it happen 13 weeks a year, in the fall. Party all night Friday night, and up at 7:30-ish for College GameDay.

No excuses.

I'm actually glad it got moved. Now those 11AM starts central time where I watch are gone. the 12am CST were better...this is great. This parlays itself right into a fun filled night. Game over at 7 ish and we just continue on at the bars....very very nice.

Plus I don't have to get up at 4 AM to catch a 6 AM flight into Chicago so I can get to the bar on time anymore. Hallelujah!

The only thing that sucks about it is that the Alabama-Auburn game is typically the same day; and at least for the past couple of years has been a 3:30 kick as well (broadcast on CBS).

They've announced that the Iron Bowl will be moving to Thansgiving weekend, but that starts in 2007.

There's nothing like watching 'GameDay' with Herbie and the Coach ending their telecast (9:00am Pacific Standard Time), and then turning to ABC to watch the Buckeyes beat up on Meatchicken. Doesn't get any better than that. Going to 3:30 (Ohio time), makes it 12:30 PST, and Milli gets to see it at 9:30 Hawaiian time, rather than his usual 6:30 AM time.

However, other than the million or so Buckeye/Michigan fans out here, probably everyone else will be watching USC/UCLA, which is also one of the Rivalry games on that day. And won't it be smack dab in the middle of Auburn/Alabama, which doesn't usually draw alot of watchers out here, but is a good hitting game normally........

Let's see whether the AD's stick to their guns, or whether the Big Bucks (dollars) call the shots, as they so often do.

Yeah...it started at 1:00 the past few years. The only problem with a 3:30 start is split coverage with other games. Usually The Game gets near-national coverage with the 1:00 PM start, but at 3:30 a whole lot of other games will be going on.

I personally like 3:30 games, cause the first half is in the day and the second half the sun is setting, so its kinda like a night game.

Before the switch to 1pm starts and for sure in the 90's and years prior THE GAME was ALWAYS NATIONALLY televised. May be, just may be THE GAME isn't drawing as much interest over the last five years. People are getting tired of watching LLLLoyd and UM getting their ass kicked!!!

Herbie is calling games on ABC next year so I wouldnt think he is still doing Gameday, but I could be wrong.

I don't have a link for you, but I've read that Herbie will still do Gameday and if the Saturday Night game is at the same site as Gameday, then he will announce the game as well. Sometimes, he'll fly from Gameday to the Saturday Night game also, but I'm pretty sure that Herbie, Corso, and Fowler will all be back for Gameday.

Personally, it's not that big of a deal to me. "The Game" will always be "The Game" to me. The time is totally irrelevant and has no impact, in my opinion. It could be on at 2 AM in the morning, and I'd still watch it.

Honestly, I think it would be kind of cool to see a night game between the two.

I'm glad it's not a night game, I shudder at the thought of a full-day of drunken tailgating with "THE enemy" in town, attempting to do the same.

3:30pm is PLENTY of time for more partying no matter what happened the night before. I had no problem with 12pm kickoff and going to bed at 3:30am and waking up at 7:30 to crack open a cold brewski (starting where I left off 5 hrs prior) while breakfast was being made. This just allows for more drunkeness as a whole (not condoning anything here). The businesses that serve alcohol must be loving this I would think!

There are positive and negatives to this time change; most covered here. BUT I think that this could be a "test" for a slow move towards making it a prime time night game eventually (which I'd be opposed to; but could get used to). The topic has been brought up before but not in this thread! Seems that Tradition doesn't carry much weight anymore. The "Rodent" of Anaheim and his almighty dollar seem to have overthrown some traditions!

agreed hayn, I wouldn't be surprised if it is a primetime game within the next few years. No doubt ohioans can get plenty drunk by 3:30.

And mili, over on GBW there's a poster claiming many of the 12 noon ABC games were not carried on the west coast. No that wasn't me you quoted over there... hard to believe I know

I didn't think they had ever had a night game at the Out House, and that they don't even have lights there? I hope they don't make it a night game. If you ask me, night games are a gimmick - something the NC States of the world need to get on TV. Ohio State - M*ch*g*n doesn't need any gimmicks or sideshows.

Strohs, actually Herbie will still be doing College Gameday. He will also do some of the ABC Saturday Night games as an analyst (with Bob Davie). I'm guessing he'll do all the ABC games that are in close proximity to the College Gameday set ... meaning when College Gameday is on location for the game that ABC will broadcast that night. (EDIT: I see BearBuck27 already cover this info) Here's the Disney lineup for this season:

In a related note, I ran across this information about Buckeye alum Cris Carter:

Westwood One Announces Dick Enberg and Cris Carter as Thursday Night Football Broadcast Team -- Dick Enberg, Play-by-Play Announcer -- Cris Carter, Color Analyst -- (June 01, 2006)

NEW YORK, June 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Westwood One (NYSE: WON) announced today the appointment of legendary, award-winning broadcaster Dick Enberg and NFL great Cris Carter as part of its Thursday Night Football broadcast team. Enberg will provide the play-by-play with Carter serving as Color Analyst for all Westwood One's Thursday Night Football broadcasts. In addition, Carter will also serve as an analyst for Westwood One's Saturday Night NFL broadcasts. Westwood One's coverage of the 2006-2007 NFL season kicks off Thursday, September 7, as the defending Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers host the Miami Dolphins.

"I'm excited to return to radio on Westwood One, where unlike television with its immediate pictures, the announcer paints the entire canvas," said Enberg. "Working with Cris Carter, a future Hall of Fame receiver, will be a special pleasure. I know that no matter what I throw at him, he'll catch it and head up field."

"I am thrilled to be a part of Westwood One's new Thursday/Saturday package, and to have the pleasure of working with one of the greatest play-by- play announcers of all time, Dick Enberg," said Carter.

ABC moves time for OSU-Michigan football game

Network sets the kickoff hours later to get 'better coverage.'

By Doug Harris
Staff Writer
COLUMBUS | ABC-TV has opted to move the Ohio State-Michigan football game on Nov. 18 from its traditional early-afternoon kickoff, but that didn't cause any hand-wringing among OSU officials.
<!--endtext-->

<!-- inset --> <!--begintext--> The 51st telecast of the storied rivalry will air at 3:30 p.m., as opposed to the noon or 1 p.m. time slot it has occupied for years.
"ABC actually has that option (of deciding when games are played), and they asked us this year to consider moving it to 3:30," OSU spokesman Steve Snapp said. "The rationale was that we would get better coverage in the western half of the United States. More stations would carry it. By going this way, we get better exposure."
Longtime OSU football historian Jack Park said he didn't see any harm in the change, but he was surprised the schools were so quick to break from tradition.
"I think a lot of people are wondering, 'What's next?' " he said.
ABC will begin airing a weekly college football game in prime time this season, but Snapp said the OSU-Michigan clash was never part of those discussions.
"It would be awfully cold that time of year," he said. "With our climate, it would be very difficult to do."
The Buckeyes will play two 8 p.m. games this season — at Texas on Sept. 9 and at Iowa on Sept. 30.
The Big Ten also announced that OSU's home opener against Northern Illinois on Sept. 2 will air at 3:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ABC, while the OSU-Cincinnati game Sept. 16 will begin at noon with ESPN regional coverage.
