Tressel and Carr are no Woody and Bo

BUCKEYE BUZZ:@ Woody and Bo were close friends, although the public perspective might have been completely different. Current Ohio State coach Jim Tressel says he and Michigan counterpart Lloyd Carr have a professional relationship, nothing more and nothing less.

Tressel believes his situation puts him in a unique position to empathize with Carr."There might be a little bit more understanding on my part knowing exactly what he's living every day, because the expectations are tremendous. Just like ours are," Tressel said Monday.

Tressel gained a lot of respect for Carr when they both were recruiting the same player five years ago. The recruit told Tressel, then a rookie head coach at Ohio State, what the Michigan coach said to him as he was deliberating his choice.
"One thing you want to make sure you do is you want to go to one of these two schools because this is the greatest rivalry in college football and you want to be a part of that," Tressel recalled Carr telling the kid. "And that was my first time being in this seat and him in that seat and I was tremendously impressed with his feeling for what Ohio State and Michigan are both all about."

The player, whom Tressel would not identify, came to Ohio State.

ANOTHER WATCH:@ QB Troy Smith and LB James Laurinaitis are both on the watch list for the Walter Camp player of the year award, it was announced Monday.

HONOREES:@ Smith shared the Big Ten's offensive player of the week award after passing for four TDs against Northwestern. Michigan's Steve Breaston was the special teams honoree after returning a punt 83 yards in the win over Indiana.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:@ Asked about the history of the rivalry, particularly the landmark 1969 game, Michigan OL Rueben Riley said, "I was born in 1984."

Michigan ?a great football team,? Tressel says

Jim Tressel left the impression that today was just another Monday in the Ohio State football season, that it was business as usual, but with a twist.
Second-ranked Michigan is coming to town to take on his No.1 Buckeyes in what is being billed not only as the game of the year but in some circles as the regular-season game of the century. And that's not just looking back to the year 2000, but into the 1900s and beyond.
Into that whirlpool he stepped just past noon today, facing a horde of local and national reporters in the meeting room at the Jack Nicklaus Museum near campus.
"We're playing against a great football team; everbody knows that," Tressel said. "That's why this room is so full."
He went on to extol the virtues of the Wolverines, from their outstanding defensive front led by Lombardi Award finalist Lamarr Woodley to an offense led by veteran quarterback Chad Henne and running back Michael Hart and turbocharged by receivers Mario Manningham and Steve Breaston.
After several minutes on Michigan, Tressel paused and said: "I suppose I should have mentioned last week's game, but we haven't thought much about it. And, so, just being honest."
The 54-10 win at Northwestern is pretty much a distant memory, considering what is on the line for both teams Saturday: an outright Big Ten championship, which would be the first for OSU since 1984, and a spot in the Bowl Championship Series national title game.
"It's finally here, what you've been talking about for six weeks," Tressel said to the media. "We're excited to be at this point, to have the privilege of being in the Ohio State-Michigan game and having it right here in our stadium, and the whole world will be watching two outstanding football teams."
Whoever is watching will get its first glimpse in a while of OSU left tackle Alex Boone, who has been cleared to play after missing the past two weeks because of a knee injury. Also expected back, Tressel said, is freshman backup defensive back Kurt Coleman, a standout on special teams.
Reserve tight end Brandon Smith will miss his second straight game with an unspecified injury, but other than that, Tressel said, the Buckeyes are good to go. And that goes for quarterback Troy Smith, the Heisman Trophy front-runner who has been playing the past several weeks with a harness on his right thumb.
"With this being game 12 of 12 games in a row, I have no complaints," Tressel said of his team's health.

Just got back from the pep rally tonight, it was a lot better than I thought it was going to be. Packed house, all the chairs filled with people standing in the back.

Steven A. Smith was there, he didn't say much, just his usual get people fired up. He talked about how he just got back from Michigan and what they were saying and so on.

Then Speilman spoke, that was awesome, probably the highlight of the night. I wish I had a transcript of what he said, maybe some articles will come out with some quotes, but his speech was great. He talked about how special the game was and how it was everyone's obligation to support the team just like it was the players obligation to play their best and how hard the game is played among other things.

Then the players came out. Quinn Pitcock, David Patterson, Jay Richardson and T.J. Downing were all there. They each said a few words and then they played a game of pictionary which sounds kinda lame I guess but it was actually pretty funny and entertaining. The most interesting thing about that was how competitive they all were during the game, not surprising I guess.

That was pretty much it, we waited around a little bit afterwards and Steven A. Smith interviewed a couple students in charge of "Beat Michigan Weak" which will air (I'm assuming on his show) on Wednesday or Thursday they said.

Overall a pretty cool night.

This is going to be an outstanding game! Hey those in C-bus, are they boarding up the windows on HIgh Street and taking off the parking meter heads like they did in the 60's?

I'm reading the previous posts, and being a product of Columbus and going to OSU games since the 50's, I seem to remember Meatchicken knocking off the higher ranked Buckeyes than OSU doing to the Wolverweenies. Of course, I remember only the great games with Wayne Woodrow at the helm (short-sleeved shirt even with the snow falling!). Then good ol' 2-10-1 Coop, who could turn victory into defeat (great recruiter, but not a very good game day coach) to the current 'In Tress We Trust'.

OK, I'm a believer. I believe that this coaching staff will have this team so primed (and LLLloyd will have his too) that we're in for one of the games of the century. I cannot foresee a run-away (as much as I'd like to see OSU put up a quick 21). Both teams have been practicing ahead (like the good old days), and OSU even had Northwestern the week before (just like the good old days) to work on Meatchicken.

Envious of those of you in Buckeyeland (1) who have tickets to the game; (2) live in C-bus environs that will get the preliminary game day stuff on the tube, and the post game stuff. Enjoy it, and I'll be looking to download it from Buckeye Planet as soon as it's available. It'll bear watching.

Ann Arbor Talk Radio

Not sure if any other visitors to this website reside near Ann Arbor so I thought I would offer a Scouting report on what's going on up here. I love Ohio State week in the Detroit area. The nimrod slappies on Ann Arbor talk radio make absolute asses of themselves all week and it starts early on Monday. They get a couple of old players to show up to make bold statements like "we'll win by 10 points" or my personal favorite that "Troy Smith may not be the better quarterback in the contest". :lol: :crazy: I'm not sure where they find these players to make these comments. Obviously they must have easy jobs around town (A Squared as the locals like to call it) because they certainly are not on NFL squads. Then they play old audio of play by play action from past games with UM highlights. As you may guess, the audio sounds pretty scratchy because it's so freegin' old. As frustrating as it is to hear this crap, I get the joy of hearing the radio flunkies lick their wounds next Monday and start to field all the phone calls about LLLLLoyd :( retiring. It's priceless. It's great to talk to all the Mich. State Fans up here who are all rooting for the Bucks. They have a famous statement that "Michigan never actually loses, they either run out of time or they getted "jobbed" by the officials".

The thought of SCUM getting lucky on Saturday so they can go lay an egg in Arizona on January 8th makes me ill. I think I need a drink.

My first OSU-UM game!

I will be driving up from Atlanta Friday for the game, and I can't wait. My first OSU-UM game! I was born in Mansfield in 1964, and moved down here 2 years later. I have been a life long Buckeye fan, and will be bringing my eleven year old son with me to experience this once in a lifetime game.

I work for a company here in Atlanta that provides the equipment that ABC (and ESPN) use for their hi-def broadcasts. I was supposed to hear from the satellite provider last week that he was going to get me 2 side line passes for the game, but as of today, I have not heard from him. So this weekend I decided to book a room in the area (Reynoldsburg Days Inn) and go ahead and make the drive north.

I will be coming to Columbus with my Buckeye flags flying. I will not have a lot of money, so I can't afford to buy tickets from scalpers, but will be full of Buckeye spirit! All my friends think I am absolutely nuts to drive 8 hours to sit outside in the cold and watch the game on TV. I just tell them that it is a Buckeye thing, they wouldn't understand! :wink2:

Go Buckeyes!!!

Not that it is cheap, but I saw a nice single go on ebay today for about $325. The market appears to have bottomed out.

Hope you and your son have a great experience. If you do end up sitting outside the stadium and get really, really cold I still wouldn't accept anyone's offer to sit on a nice warm sofa.

Nobody's talking about why, but after University of Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr finished taping interviews for Saturday's game against Ohio State with ABC Sports Monday, he came storming out of the Michigan locker room irate and loudly complaining about the direction the questioning had taken.

Carr uttered several profanities and left in his car after ordering Dave Ablauf, assistant director of media relations, to go back and address his concerns with the television crew.

Ablauf and ABC officials refused to discuss the incident afterward.
