The 2011 Ohio State Buckeyes: What will their legacy be?

Watching. Always watching.

What will fans remember when they speak of this Ohio State team?

  • The selfishness of a handful of players?
  • The foolish email message by a former player?
  • Poor decision-making by a man who could have been remembered as the best Ohio State coach ever?
  • The miserable mismanagement of the ensuing mess by the University administration and especially Gene Smith?
  • The fantastic decline in expectations from a possible national championship run to what could be remembered as one of the most disappointing seasons for Ohio State football ever?
This week the Ohio State Buckeyes have a chance to shape their legacy. None of the preceding weeks will matter if these players go into Ann Arbor and come back victorious.

These players can still have the distinction of never having lost to TSUN. There is no better legacy.

The thing i will always have in the back of my mind about this season will be
how a man like Jim Tressel thought he was doing the right thing by withholding the information that he knew of. I will never be able to figure that one out. Because if he decided to inform Gene Smith about what ws
going on, would there whole 2010 season been completley taken away?

Maybe that was in his thought process and to the whole city of Columbus
and Ohio State, that would have been devistating so he decided to see if
he could get away with it. I will always wonder what would have happed
if Tressel would have come forth and told Gene Smith the truth.

Guys, my point is, for what will the team be remembered. I mean the players. They should define their legacy. Not the administrators, coaches, or players who let them down.

It's time to stand and deliver and they can do it.

I'd also like to disagree politely. Beating TSUN makes any season worthwhile. Remaining unbeaten by TSUN throughout your career at Ohio State is a distinction that few players in the history of the program can claim.

Seasons like this one are what makes the rivalry so special.

This season is lost, yet a win over Michigan makes everything seem a little bit better.

Last game of the season and, quite possibly, the last game of their careers for the seniors. Play like it.

For those that let their team and their university down, well, that is something that those involved will have to live with. This season could have been something special, yet these young people (and one older one who really should have known better) chose to be selfish. It may not bother them now, but down the road, with time to reflect, I have a feeling there will be a great deal of regret. And that's something that doesn't go away.

The definition of Legacy is sort of like a gift handed down from someone in the past. And then what do they do with it after it has been handed down to them.

Thru all of what they (the player and coaches) had to go thru i think they did the best they could and i was(and still am) very proud of how they handled, what was given to them................ It will make them a much stronger team for 2012 regardless of who the coach will be. The team was left in a lurch
without thier head man who had his finger prints all over them. They will be remembered always as the team who had to over come many things that wasnt really expected.

I can see your point Steve that a victory over Michigan could be what the players can point to in future years when looking back at a "lost" season. For the seniors it could be a point of redemption in what for many will be a legacy of disappointment. I am sure that the last thing the Seniors want is for this season to be remembered, on top of everything else, as the season that the "ScUM Streak" ended...

2011 will be remembered as the WORST year in my 30+ years of following the Buckeyes. Hopefully, the worst year I'll live to see. This team should have been a national championship contender. However, championship teams are unselfishness and this senior class was anything but. The 2011 senior class failed this team, and fan-base, both on and off the field. The Wisconsin game was the only moment of the year that I felt proud of this team. Appropriately, 2 freshman created this moment. I hate to be a pessimist but I fully expect the 2011 team to blow the scUM streak as an encore. I also fully expect a big rebound next year, assuming an overhaul of the coaching staff. There's way too much talent in place to be this bad.

I will remember this year, as a "should've been" year, so much wasted talent. We should've been in the heat of the NC race, especially with how weak the big 10 has been this year. It hurts to think of how good we should've been, with TP, boom, posey and Adams back. But with so many suspensions, uncertainties, firings and just unexpected appearances from unproven players, it was gonna be incredibly difficult to have our usual stellar buckeye year. I also think that this year will almost be considered a year as a gap ushering in a new coaching regime as well(hopefully an even more successful one than the previous). But a win against scum would make the year end a good note, but it sucks thinking of what could've happened

That's what I'll remember. The most exciting game I've ever attended. Walking on the field & celebrating with all of the fans. Something that I'll NEVER forget.
