Thad Matta (OSU's All Time Winningest Coach & 3x B1G COY, Butler HC)

Looked it up, and I was pleasantry surprised to see that Coach Matta was 5th highest paid coach in NCAA basketball

NCAA BBAll Coach Salaries

I gotta say though, I understand the advantage of less pressure because we are a football school, combined with being very well paid etc. But, I Went to the game last night (first game i've been to at Value City Arena) and the support is underwhelming for a 23-0 #1 ranked team. It did get loud at times in 2nd half, but atmosphere is not what it should be for a program like we have.

10 Questions With Thad Matta
Saturday, February 5, 2011 8:05 AM
WBNS-10TV

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State men's basketball coach Thad Matta is leading the No. 1 team in the nation. Despite being the busy man that he is, he still found time to answer our 10 questions.

1. What's the best thing about coaching at Ohio State?
Being a Buckeye, I think, just the power and the feeling you get anytime you are involved with Ohio State and how much these people love the Buckeyes. The No. 1 thing for me is just being a part of something that is so special.

Cont'd ...

He is not an elite basketball coach, he is an elite recruiter. He has certainly made strides as a coach, but I would not want him to coach up my mercenaries in the league.

He has made OSU an extremely high profile bball school without the repercussions. He locks down Ohio and plucks a few other Midwest kids and continues to get first round talent and players of the year. I think it is easier to recruit this much talent at OSU in some ways.

Most importantly, when he recruits too well and has many early departures, the fans still love him because they do not define their happiness by round bball results. Until they change the one and done rule this is a big asset.
Yes but couldnt the same be said for Calipari?

Thad Matta will:

A. Be At OSU for a long time and be an OSU basketball Icon (i.e. like Coach K, Jim Calhoun, Jim Boehiem are for their respective schools)
This will be difficult to do IMO. Coach K and Calhoun started in a different era. In today's one and done system, winning multiple NC is going to prove very difficult. I think he will go down as a big time winner, but reaching "legendary" status is going to prove to be very tough to do. But a tOSU icon? I'd argue he's already there...
B. Will leave at some point for NBA head coaching Job
No. Like jwins said above, Coach Matta is an elite recruiter. As a X's and O's guy, he still has a ways to go. He's your quintessential college coach.
C. Will leave OSU for a higher profile NCAA gig at some point (Kentucky, Kansas, UConn, UNC etc.)
No. IMO, if he was, he would already have. He's in a great situation right now and I don't see him going anywhere.
All this said, I cannot think of a better coach for tOSU than Coach Matta. What he's done in his time here, at a "Football School" is simply extraordinary. The man will be approaching 200 wins after just seven years when this season is done...WOW.

This. Even if we never win a national title, our dominance in the conference and our solid, consistent performance nationally will make him an icon for us.

No fucking way. He has it too good right here.

He is already getting us to becoming one of those "higher profile" places. Another five years or so of winning conference titles and making deep runs in the NCAA tournament will make us one of those schools perception wise.

My opinions.

Err how is he not an elite coach? The man has consistently won 20 games in a routinely deep Big Ten conference while probably losing more talent then anyone in the country. Sounds pretty elite to me.

He is an elite coach, because of his recruiting. Thad doesn't get it done just on pure coaching talent, but has done a great job of bringing in great talent to make those transitions smoother. He's still a great coach with plenty of basketball knowledge, but a lot of his success stems from his elite recruiting ability.

At least, that's how I view it.

I agree with this. The original post seemed to imply that Thad was an average coach masking his success with a lot of talent.

You can say this based on his time here at Ohio State, but what about during his time at Butler and Xavier? He didn't have elite talent when he was at either school, yet he still was a 24+ win coach every year at those schools and was a game away from making the Final Four when he was at Xavier the year before he came to OSU.

Totally agree. And that Xavier team got shafted by the refs in the Elite 8 against, of course, Duke. Ridiculous set of calls to swing the game to Duke at the end of that game.

Matta is an elite coach. His immediate post-game analyses are always spot-on, often more in-depth and articulate than many other elite coaches give in prepared pressers. And he also develops the talent that he has. David West is an obvious example of this.
