In 1997, Scott Robisch was an all-state high school player from Springfield, Ill., and Thad Matta was an ambitious assistant coach at Butler. Butler coach Barry Collier badly wanted Robisch, a 6-foot-11 center who would have been a big signing for the Bulldogs.
Robisch seemed out of reach. Matta had done everything within NCAA rules to woo Robisch, who was leaning toward Oklahoma State. Finally, Matta said, "Scott, my wife is pregnant. If it's a boy, I will name him Scott.''
Nice, but as Matta recalls, "I already knew we were having a girl.''
Robisch signed with Oklahoma State. Two years later, he transferred to Butler.

Matta likes playing the folksy farm kid from the aptly named Hoopeston, Ill. He claims not to know what Twitter is. He says "gosh.'' Matta says the older he gets (he's 43 now), the less in touch he is with the culture of the players he recruits. "When I'm mad at them, I make them listen to country music,'' Matta says.

Great article.

You asked, Matta answered

I had some time near the end of media day today, and during my one-on-one with him last week, to ask Thad Matta most of the questions you forwarded me, as well as a few of my own. Here are his answers:

Question: Are you planning to open any practices to the public before a football game, perhaps before the Purdue game Oct. 23?

Answer: We were trying to, but it's a noon kickoff and there's a concert (the night before), so we can't get the main floor down (for before the game). I was going to try to do something that morning, but we can't.

Q: Three years ago with a young team, you played zone defense because you said it was easier for the young players to master. Are you going to play zone or man-to-man with this team?

A: I think we'll play a lot of man-to-man.

Q: Do you know how many minutes you would like to play Dallas Lauderdale and Jared Sullinger together in a big lineup?

A: I don't. We haven't put a whole lot in offensively (during skill workouts). Everything we've done has been primarily defensively based. We'll get a lot of questions answered as we open up (practice).

OSU men's basketball: Matta cautious despite lofty preseason ranking
Friday, October 15, 2010
By Bob Baptist
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State finished last season ranked No.5 among the nation's men's college basketball teams.

Various preseason rankings out now think the Buckeyes, with four starters returning, will be as good if not better in 2010-11 - a fact not lost on school president E. Gordon Gee, who mentioned it to coach Thad Matta not long ago.

"I said, 'Well, they obviously didn't know we lost Evan Turner,'" Matta said yesterday at the team's media day, a day before today's official start of practice.

Turner, as a junior, averaged 20.4 points, 9.2 rebounds and six assists, led Ohio State to Big Ten regular-season and tournament championships and was the consensus player of the year in college basketball. He was the No.2 pick in the NBA draft.

Regardless, with his fellow starters - seniors Jon Diebler, Dallas Lauderdale and David Lighty and junior William Buford - all returning, the Buckeyes are picked by Blue Ribbon Basketball Yearbook to reach the Final Four this season, ranked No. 4 on FoxSports.com and No. 6 by ESPN.com.

"I don't know," Matta said. "There are certain teams that are there and stay there. There are other teams that probably shouldn't be there. I don't know where we are today. If they have us fifth, what are we, third in the Big Ten? That kind of gives you a sign of where my mind is."

Ohio State men: Even-keeled coach
Thad Matta might sweat through his suit coat during games, but his overriding message: Don't sweat it

More from The Dispatch's college basketball preview section

Before complications from back surgery three years ago left him with no feeling in his right foot, coach Thad Matta could be hell on wheels in the gym.

"I still remember when I came to watch practice as a recruit one day and he was doing the passing drills," senior guard Jon Diebler said.

"He always says now, 'If I could walk, I'd jump in and show you how to do it.' Physically, he's not capable, but the heart and the passion are always there.

"You see him on the sideline - he's drenched in sweat. The guy has to carry a towel because he sweats so much during games. That's how passionate he is."

And yet Matta's message is the complete opposite of his madness.

If he is an emotional roller coaster on the court, he is a sunny country drive off it. His teams have been the beneficiary.

"That's how he always is," senior guard/forward David Lighty said. "Never get too high, never get too low."

Matta's ability to keep his teams on an even keel through the long college basketball season has helped them win 258 games and six conference championships in his 10 years as a head coach, including three Big Ten titles in six years at Ohio State.

The incredible Thad Matta
By Bruce Hooley
FOX Sports Ohio

There is one explanation with two reasons why there will be no parade to accompany Ohio State's ascent to the nation's No. 1 ranking in college basketball today.

The explanation is this: It's only basketball.

Reason No. 1: Unlike the playoff-free world of college football, in college basketball a mid-season No. 1 ranking guarantees nothing in the postseason when tournament results trump rankings in revealing the true measure of a team's ability.

Reason No. 2: At Ohio State, anything accomplished on the basketball court is just as likely to inspire a yawn as it is to elicit an ovation.

Head coach Thad Matta has been fighting that second-class citizen status of his sport at OSU since taking over the program at its nadir in the summer of 2004.

What he's done since is more remarkable than anything any of Ohio State's legendary football coaches have ever accomplished.

That's right.
