Thad Matta (OSU's All Time Winningest Coach & 3x B1G COY, Butler HC)

You keep commenting that you can see him going to a bigger school, but also think this is the best job. It's kind of hard/frustrating to have a discussion/debate when you're on both sides of the fence.Actually you did (hypothetically), which I quoted before responding.Apparently you're now arguing both...What words did I put in your mouth? You asked what we thought about Matta leaving b/c OSU is more interested in football success... correct?

I asked you to explain what you meant (especially as a cause of Matta's departure), and then commented that it's logical that football will get more support (edit: even if they're completely committed to an elite bball program).
Im saying its logical for a coach, to go to a school where the sport they coach, is the schools primary sport.. their best sport, for example.. again UK. tOSU is a great job, and for the right person its a dream job. Its my personal dream job, is it Mattas? idk? not if he wants to be the premier coach at his school.. because john cooper could still be here and football would still get more attention, IMO.

Actually I didnt. I never said Matta deserves to be the man over JT.

Heres what I asked

came up at lunch today.. thad matta will always be second fiddle to football.. if a UK comes barking, will matta be gone?
Not once did I say he would be gone.

and what fence? what did i say that puts me on the other side (other side being the one that says he will leave for a more storied program)

And I still think UK is a prime example of why it's not always logical to take that job.

Doesn't this come back to your 'common sense' comment?

I just feel like we're riding a merry-go-round with this discussion. None of the criteria discussed assures that he will stay or leave.

You state you think this is the best job, or maybe it's not, and then pose hypothetical questions like these. You may personally be on one side of the fence, but you're arguing/discussing from both.

posing a hypothetical question, about our coach going elsewhere because he is damn good & deserves to be the main guy, not behind a great football coach.. whats the problem with that?

Just curious to see what others thoughts were on the idea of him leaving, for the pure and simple fact that tOSU is (appears) more "interested" in football sucess.
From the 'leaving' fence, as requested.

Because I argued the answers I was reciving.. God forbid we have a discussion.. and yes Dryden, a desirable coach is a very good thing to have I agree 100%

a potential recruit looks at my post, posing a hypothetical question, about our coach going elsewhere because he is damn good & deserves to be the main guy, not behind a great football coach.. whats the problem with that? Its a message board.. i doubt hypothetical questions are gonna make a big name recruit say no to our school, especially when it centers around him being an awesome coach.

i mean lets be honest the last time we had coaches of this caliber in both sports was fred taylor & woody hayes.. its an awesome thing we have right now.. who wouldn't want to be a part of it?

Just curious to see what others thoughts were on the idea of him leaving, for the pure and simple fact that tOSU is (appears) more "interested" in football sucess. Like I orginally stated, it came up at lunch and wanted to discuss it with fellow die-hards.. if thats a problem, im sorry.. dont mean to scare any recruits away because they read that Bleed S & G can see him going to a bigger basketball school in a couple years :roll2: yeah the sky is sure falling now

Ohio State sports enjoy the facilities that they have, and Matta has the salary he has, because of the football program. Football is a far bigger sport in American collegiate sports than basketball.

There is no reason to believe Matta is going anywhere. None. There is no sign that he feels disrespected. There is no sign that he is not getting exactly everything he wants, in fact it appears he is getting everything he wants at Ohio State. He sits on the second highest pay package in college basketball. He has the facilities that allow him to recruit anyone he wants. His assistants are well paid and apparently very happy.

So, with all due respect, why keep belaboring this point that he is likely to leave, with no evidence to support the claims you make. Especially when the evidence suggests completely the opposite?

What basis is there for arguing that Matta doesn't see himself as Ohio State's premier coach?

If Matta wins a national championship, does anyone really believe that basketball will be a secondary sport at Ohio State?

Who says its "logical" that a coach will go to the school where basketball is the largest sport? If its logical, can you present us with some compelling logic to support that contention? Isn't it logical that if you can earn the second largest pay packet in your sport, have the best facilities, and get everything you want, that it might make a lot of sense to not have the pressure of every loss becoming a source of suicide threats from nutty fans? Would Matta really want to be sitting in Tubby Smith's shoes right now?

Who says that he would go to a "more storied program"? Maybe he wants to be known as the guy who made Ohio State the nation's premier program? What if Matta has it in his mind to be remembered as the Woody Hayes of Ohio State basketball? Can you show us one piece of evidence to the contrary?

I don't have any more of a crystal ball than anyone else, but it looks to me like Matta will be in Columbus a long time and I haven't seen anything argued in this thread or elsewhere to even suggest to me that it might be otherwise.

Coaches are masters of preparation, creatures of habit

Thad Matta takes a 32-win Ohio State team into San Antonio this week. His Buckeyes are deep, athletic, offensively explosive, defensively resolute, physically mature and mentally tough....

(continue with link, couldn't copy and paste rest of it, but it is an article about Thad Matta and his pregame routines).

Ohio State notebook: Butler-Florida NCAA matchup of special interest to Matta

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

SAN ANTONIO -- Fresh off a second-round escape of Xavier, the school he formerly coached, Thad Matta will keep a sentimental eye on his alma mater this weekend. Butler, where the Ohio State coach played and later coached, has a Sweet 16 rematch with Florida in the Midwest Regional on Friday in St. Louis. Seven years ago, the Gators eliminated the Bulldogs 69-68 in the first round on a leaning runner in the lane as time expired in overtime.

Different team but same stress
BY DUSTIN DOW | [email protected]

SAN ANTONIO - Three years and a six-spot improvement in the seedings haven't made things any easier for Thad Matta in the NCAA Tournament.
He was nervous and quirky three years ago when he led Xavier to a regional semifinal victory against Texas, and he was nervous and quirky Wednesday at the Alamodome while preparing his Ohio State squad for tonight's game against Tennessee.
How quirky? Matta didn't even want to answer a question when a Columbus television reporter asked him about his many superstitions in the Buckeyes' locker room.

list the stadiums youve been to for football.

list the basketball arenas youve been attended a game in.

then well discuss.

Again, irrelevant. Making this mini-discussion about who's been to the most stadiums/arenas is no more than a pissing match. ("whip it out. then we'll discuss.")
