I'm thinking of Bellichek's assistants who seemed competent while working for him but bombed when set free, especially Charlie Weis.

Matt Patricia, Josh McDaniels. I'm sure there's many others, I just don't follow the NFL close enough to know who they are.

Another similar scenario in CFB to your Bellichick example, which I mentioned in a different thread, is that there are a lot of coaches who were killer recruiters as Saban assistants at Bama, but when they go off on their own, end up being pretty mediocre recruiters.
