Texas Longhorns (big hat, no cattle; please don’t Horns Down us)

Now the Longhorn Network ESPN wants to try yet again to broadcast high school sporting events - this time as highlights.

So, instead of broadcasting a game that includes a kid or two they are recruiting, they can edit an entire game to where it exclusively features a kid or two they are recruiting.

I can see where Texas might be confused.

They're probably just going to end up setting up their set in a newsroom style...people shuffling papers and walking from desk to desk dropping things off. Phones ringing and fax machines whirring. Never mind the 120 inch plasma in the background showing highlight reels of Texas recruiting targets...not part of the show. Just the happenings of a newsroom.

It's like a sex offender getting a restraining order, then asking if he can park his van outside a school but only during recess.

With the announced launch date of tomorrow, the Longhorn Network has its first home, which will start broadcasting on Sept 1st.

CBS

The Longhorn Network has a home

Two weeks ago we told you that the controversial Longhorn Network was yet to find a carrier even though it was set to launch on August 26th. It was a situation that wasn't all that odd for a new network as it negotiated with cable providers to find a home, and I said in the post that I would be shocked if the network hadn't worked out a deal somewhere before it launched.

Well, there's no need for me to be shocked. It was announced on Thursday that the Longhorn Network had struck a deal with Verizon FIOS.

...
Now this doesn't mean that everybody in the state of Texas will now be able to see the network, as FIOS is only available in northern Texas at the moment. Still, its market in the state does include Dallas and Fort Worth, which is a pretty nice start. The problem is that even though the network officially launched on Friday August 26th, FIOS will not begin carrying it until September 1st, two days before Texas' season opener against Rice is to be shown on the station.

As for other cable providers and homes throughout the rest of Texas, odds are that new deals will be agreed upon in the coming days. Television negoatiations work a bit like a domino effect, and now that one provider has agreed to a deal and groundwork has been laid, others should follow suit in the coming days.

Cont'd ...

Good article about the selfishness of Texas and its consequences.

http://www.kansascity.com/2011/08/27/3104468/texas-abusing-its-power-in-the.html

You know, when the piper comes to get paid, it's hard as hell to pony up those duckets he wants....

The ENTIRE BIG 8 CONFERENCE had a chance to nip this in the bud almost 15 years ago. Doc Tom saw the writing on the wall a long, long time ago:

"From the day that I sat down with him when he became the athletic director, he expressed strong concern about a lot of the things that happened when the Big 12 was formed, even though it was 13 or 14 or 15 years previous," [DAN] Beebe said.

They turned their eyes toward the crap UT was shoveling and took a big gulp of it. Now, they're saying their coulda shoulda woulda's.

I know we're known as 'traditionalists' here in Nebraska, but I could care less right now about what happens to those Benedict Arnolds. We're not right about everything, but it was pretty obvious that things were going to change for the worse for teams NOT named Texas when they joined the league.

Anyone else notice the Longhorn Network ticker at the bottom of ESPN that rotates around with all the other usual ones, ie scores?

"Please call your cable provider and request that they add the Longhorn Network" or something like that.

ummmm, how about no.

Almost motivates me to call and say I don't want it, but I'm in Ohio so if they can't even get it in most of Texas I think I'm safe for now.

I subscribe to every add-on that Time Warner has that gives me more college football. That said, if they tack LHN onto any of those packages, I will immediately have it cancelled.

I'm with you ... Right now only Verizon FIOS and Grande communications have it... i wanna call TWC and say... if you put that crap in the standard package i'll sue and have you place the BTN in the standard package... I'm fine also long as they don't put it in the standard package
