Texas Longhorns (big hat, no cattle; please don’t Horns Down us)

Is Ewers in the portal yet?

Just sayin':

1) I always wonder if a famous guy's son (or grandson or nephew) is really that could or just gets more publicity because of his relative. Phil Simms' son and Joe Montana's son really didn't live up to the hype, etc.; however, Archie Manning's sons did.

2) Both Manning and Ewers are the top rated QBs of their class. You have to really wonder which one is actually better. If Ewers starts this season, he'll have an advantage over Manning in 2023 and have 3 more seasons of eligibility. You know that Manning won't be sitting on the bench at Texas for 3 seasons watching Ewers play. It could be Manning that transfers. Anyway, it will be fun to watch and see how it plays out.

Well, this should make their trip to CBus in 2025 more interesting.

Yeah, and the good news is that Ohio State should have an equally competent (or even better) QB* and undoubtedly a better WR group in 2025 to compete with Texas.

* McCord, Brown, or Raiola, etc.

All I can say is that if tejas still sucks after getting Ewers and Manning then it will for once and for all prove that the rot in that program is incurable. Adding Manning to the mix doesn't take the pressure off; it increases it infinitely. They have no excuses. If Ewers is a bust, then they have Manning to step in. If they're both a bust then the odds are it's tejas and not them.

Hadn't thought of it that way, but you are spot on. That said, I don't even know if tejas could manage to screw up on both of them.

I think they'll find some way to fuck things up. They're tejas, and they've spent the better part of 45 years finding a way to do less with more.

I see two potential problems in their going so gung ho on NIL. First--and most obvious--is that it is just going to embolden and enable to unforeseen heights the toxic "big cigar" booster culture that's been a cancer on that program for decades. Second, I think you might see something of a dysfunctional "me above team" culture similar to the 1980's Yankees where Steinbrenner thought that the solution to all problems was just buying the best players he could with ZERO thought as to how they would gel together as a team.

I think the issue with your 2 prior posts, is not realizing that Manning is not really as good as his ranking. If his name was anything but Manning, he'd be a good 4star QB, but no one that fans expect to win multiple NCs and Heismans while in college. The last name alone is causing unrealistic expectations for a kid with pedestrian stats in a middling division in LA. For a 5star in such a small division, he should be doing better than just 2000yds a season. By comparison, Terrelle Pryor played in a lower PA division, but looked like an absolute man amongst boys. Pryor also had teammates who weren't known at all(next to Jordan Hall) but he elevated them to winning state championships, which Manning has yet to do. Good luck to him at Tejas, especially as they join the SEC, and there will be a lot of defenders wanting to make a name for themselves by laying out a Manning

What I see is a sophomore QB who left his former team because he didn't think he could get onto the field as the 1 in his position. Ewers had great coaching at Ohio State. We'll see how he does closer to home. He could really light things up, given his high school performance, but then, Martell looked good in high school too.

Steinbrenner getting banned from baseball in 1990 probably led to that NYY dynasty in the mid-to-late 90's

I wasn’t going to say a thing about it until you brought this up. With a nod to a previous post (sorry forgot who said it) as well as the above, Ewers has a very high ceiling. I think that coaching will be required to reach what he’s capable of putting on the field. I don’t know that Tejas has that caliber of coaching. Either way, without good coaching for him, he either becomes a very serviceable college QB who did not live up to his HS rep or he goes the way of Tate. Sad thing is, were Ewers to follow the Tate route, he’s at Houston or maybe TCU after the next transfer when he washes out. I do not hope that for him, in the least… but I do think the odds of that significantly increased with a move to Tejas.

Following that… if the QB coaching doesn’t perform, what comes of Arch? I also agree that he (my words) likely got a star bump due to his name. Without coaching that can extract the potential from a player, he becomes Shea Patterson.

So that leaves us with, “Who is the QB coach at Tejas?” And “Is this person capable of coaching up a kid to extract Heisman or national championship level play from a QB?”

I’ll leave it up to you to decide, but I’ll help you with your homework: https://texassports.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/aj-milwee/3104

And unlike Burrow (or Williams for that matter) Ewers didn't stay anywhere near long enough to gain any tangible benefits from the coaching and the program that he could take to his next stop. He was here for a cup of coffee and some NIL money. Essentially, he's starting from scratch at tejas. Oh well, if there's one truism about tejas football it's that the higher their giddy arrogance rises the sweeter their inevitable crash back to earth will be.
