Tenn +16.5 at LSU (ov/un 42.5) 3:30 ET CBS

That's what I thought.

There were SEVERAL penalties on that play. However, the only penalty that was called helped the home team.

RIGGED.

is what led me to point out that the replay could only call the one penalty that was called, no matter how egregious the other penalties were.

I mean, the game refs were obviously too busy chuckling about Les's's clock management to be paying attention to the game and they were happy to walk off the field after the not-quite-last play, so they weren't in on any sort of fix or interested in keeping LSU undefeated.

The replay folks could only call the one penalty, so no real rigging was possible on their part.

I mean, I've seen the shit they've called (Arkansas-Florida last year) but, IMO, this was just a trainwreck of piss-poor officiating, nothing with an agenda.

God, Chip Kelly's an ass.

The number of players on the field IS reviewable. Unsportsmanlike conduct, personal fouls, etc. are NOT reviewable. Seems to me that they got it right.

Thanks for clarifying. I do believe the game was called over by the officials on the field, in which case, there is no standard. The rules only say that the replay official must signal for review before the ball is put into play on the next snap. I think the replay rules should be rewritten in light of this instance. As for calling the unsportsmanlike conduct, why should anyone call it? The game was over, and there was no point in calling a penalty that couldn't be enforced. At the time, the refs on the field clearly believed that the game was over.

It's the fact they conveniently ignored the center channeling his inner Dwayne Ruud that bothers me..

No, they should not have called it.

The clock read zero and even the refs thought the game was over so they cannot call a player for taking his helmet off and throwing it.

As horrible of an ending as it was, replay worked.

Can you imagine Tennessee getting a victory when they had 13 defenders on the field for the final play?

Right call.

Offsetting penalties would still stop the clock and require repeating the down.

Incorrect. The clock reading zero means nothing. There were still players battling for the loose ball. The game isn't over until the whistle blows signifying the end of the play. The helmet throwing is a penalty in that instance that should have been called. This would have resulted in a replay of the previous down from the previous spot.

Wrong.

The play was over when he took his helmet off.

Watch the replay.

just watched the last 30 seconds or so again (don't know why i do this to myself).

the too many men on field WAS called by the back judge during the play.
on one replay from behind the offense, you can see him counting the players, then reaching for his flag. he just gets it out of his pocket when the camera pans too far to see him. but a different screen shot shows the flag in the endzone.

Like Nute says, they did call it on the field contemporaneously.

UT doesn't screw up the subbing, they win. Only The Hat's game management was so bat [censored] crazy that the late substitutions threw everybody off.

He's crazy like a sponge.

Once the offense substitutes players, isn't it the job of the official to stand over the ball until the defense has a legitimate chance to substitute players? To me, that was the big injustice. LSU should not have been allowed to snap the ball that quickly after making substitutions.

The official did, and the Vols had enough time to substitute and all 13 defenders get set for the play. Remember, no time outs. If the official forces LSU to take more time to get the Vols ready the clock runs out and you are complaining about that.
