COACH AND PROGRAM

The record is downright Switzerian. Or Osborneian. Or Paternoian.

Fifty up, 13 down for Jim Tressel in five years as Ohio State's head coach. Not bad for a guy who was considered the third or fourth choice for the Buckeyes. Not bad for a guy who built his coaching resume at I-AA Youngstown State. Not bad for a guy with a low-key personality, who is more Woody Harrelson than Woody Hayes.

Tressel's 50-13 record compares favorably to the first five years of the college football coaching legends. Joe Paterno went 42-10-1 his first five seasons at Penn State. Tom Osborne was 46-13-2 after five years at Nebraska. Bobby Bowden stood 44-14 after five years at Florida State. Barry Switzer was an unbelievable 51-5-2 after half a decade at Oklahoma.

The smart folks at Ohio State recognized Tressel's work in the spring, locking him up with a contract extension through 2012. The deal starts with a $2.378 million salary in 2006, the number climbing to $2.675 million. If he wins another national title or two, a possibility starting with this season, he is sure to get another extension and even more money. Could Tressel become college football's first three million dollar man?

Tressel's rise in the college coaching profession is one of the all-time great stories. He seemed to be a lifer at Youngstown State, winning four I-AA national titles with the Penguins. His final year in Youngstown, he had an $88,000 base salary and earned an extra $20,000 as athletic director. His total compensation is now 20 times that number after just five seasons at Ohio State. Could you squeeze by on that kind of change?

They value their college football in Columbus like few other cities in the country, and none as large. The vocal following is great for the coach when things are going well. The fans are with him win, or win in overtime. But when the seasons turn ugly, the fans become a problem.
How much does Columbus love the Buckeyes? The school drew a nation-best 63,649 … for its spring game. That's more than several Big Ten schools had for any regular-season game in 2005.

NOTE: This is just a preview, you have to have insider to read the rest. (of course.) I'd thought I'd share it with you guys anyway.

The quote re: Pittman from Coach Daniels is a keeper:
"We haven't seen the best of him yet," Daniels said. "Pitt is just starting to reach his stride. I see great things for him. When he has that football, there's a lot more confidence. He's smarter. He understands the offense better."
but for those running to place their vBets, don't count out Beenie:
"On signing day I said he looked a lot like Jim Brown," running backs coach Dick Tressel said. "Now that I have had a chance to look at him up close and personal, I have to say he looks even more like Jim Brown to me."
I think the end result has been reflected in the article and commentary though, the coaching staff is going to "protect" Chris Wells in his first season, so that he doesn't experience too much too fast like Clarett. Wells will be Pittman's understudy, where as Clarett was the BMOC from the day he unpacked his bags. They're not going to make the same mistake twice.

Of little note, espin's former producer, Shapiro, (he directed the espin onslaught against Bucks re:MC and debacle), now the ceo at Six Flags Amusement whatever, has "discovered" the SF amusement parks are losing their financial ass. With down earnings across the board, Shapiro regretfully has decided to unload the lot.

Calling Shapiro a weasel is almost an insult to the weasels.

What I hate about ESPN

Espn does not give any realistic views, they love who the love, i.e. Notre Dame, Usc and the N.E. Pats, The don't understand the true passion that a true college football has for his team, for his State, for the sport. Espn is this big corporate machine that is only motivated by the all mighty dollar, thats why only the popular players and Teams from the most favorable areas, such as L.A., N.Y. and Boston, and pretty boy Bitches like Matt Lienhartt or Tom Brady, every get any time on their station. I'm sick of Espn and their Bogus Reporting, There agenda is embarassing.

They've really lost touch with the fans, they keep jamming ND and USC down our throats. Please play something else and stop all the bias reporting.

Yeah, that's it exactly, it has nothing to do with the fact that these are currently the most successful teams in some of the nation's largest media markets. :roll1:

I love that ESPN is simultaneously shoving USC down our throats, yet has an east coast bias.
